en-US 3 en-USSEBASTIAN Theres nothing like an en-US old-fashioned hobby store to bring out the en-US youngster in everyone. Riverside Hobbies in en-US Sebastian is just that, and every aisle of the en-US large, 3,000 square foot store is filled with en-US fun ideas from floor to ceiling.en-US As I strolled the store with owner Hoge en-US Woolwine, I couldnt help but think that en-US childhood was more exciting and creative en-US before smart phones, when everybody paren-US -en-US ticipated in activities that involved our en-US hands and brains. Building models and en-US rockets and assembling train sets allowed us en-US to exercise our minds in much more active en-US ways than todays passive endeavors.en-US Ive always been a hobby-type person, en-US ever since I was 10 years old, Mr. Woolwine en-US told Hometown News. My cousin and I en-US would sit out on the back porch in New Jeren-US -en-US sey and build model cars. We would save en-US our money and go into town on Saturday en-US and go to Woolworths and get a car model, a en-US can of paint, and some glue. We did that for en-US a long time.en-US Hobe Woolwine had a similar store in en-US Princeton, N.J., for 35 years before moving en-US to Sebastian. This is the same as what we en-US had in our store in New Jersey years ago. We en-US were right across from Princeton University, en-US and a lot of our customers were university en-US students looking for something fun and en-US interesting to do.en-US Riverside Hobbies opened up in 2002, en-US and a loyal clientele from Melbourne to Port en-US St. Lucie and all points in between has kept en-US business steady. The store sells everything en-US for the hobby industry, such as airplanes, en-US cars, trains, plastic models, crafts, paint-by-en-US numbers, and rockets.en-US Were an all-around, old-style hobby en-US shop, Mr. Woolwine said. We appeal to all en-US ages, but these days many of our customers en-US are older. In fact its more than half adults en-US now. We have a big population here of retiren-US -en-US ees or people in their 30s and 40s who love en-US to build things like this.en-US A lot of customers come in and say I en-US used to build these as a kid. The store is a en-US great way to relive your childhood.en-US Parents who want their children to stop en-US being passive, sitting in front of a screen, en-US and to actually do something that uses their en-US brain will find many exciting options at Riven-US-en-US erside Hobbies.en-US Were seeing a lot of that, parents trying en-US to get their kids into stuff where they use en-US their hands and minds instead of just watchen-US -en-US ing things, Mr. Woolwine said. Parents en-US will bring their kids in and they get excited en-US about things, which is good.en-US Indeed, the store seems a fascinating en-US place to bring your children or grandchilen-US -en-US dren and let them just look around and see en-US what they get excited about.en-US Screw-together easy-build kits for kids en-US to start out with are very popular now, Mr. en-US Woolwine said. I start a lot of kids on these en-US because they are easy to do and reasonably en-US priced. They get a sense of accomplishment en-US by putting something together, and it gets en-US them interested in working with their en-US hands.en-US Microscopes and other science kits are en-US big sellers around Christmas. For children en-US and older folks who have an interest in scien-US -en-US ence projects, Riverside Hobbies has many en-US options to choose from.en-US Year-round, the biggest sellers now are en-US airplanes and airplane parts, such as transen-US -en-US mitters and receivers for remote-controlled en-US airplanes, propellers, and wings.en-US Were very airplane-oriented, Mr. Woolen-US-en-US wine said. We sell planes for people on a en-US consignment basis. If someone has a plane en-US theyre looking to sell, Ill take it on consignen-US-en-US ment. We take only a 10 percent commisen-US -en-US sion, which is lower than elsewhere.en-US Riverside Hobbies has a very big selection en-US of planes from under $200 to about $500. A en-US beginner can get into radio-controlled en-US planes for less than $200. We have one for en-US $120 that is entry level, easy to fly, Mr. en-US Woolwine said. We have gliders for around en-US $229. Riverside Hobbies also carries drones, en-US mostly upper-end drones with cameras.en-US We have a lot of parts for every hobby. en-US Construction material, parts for cars, trains, en-US die-cast metal kits. We have modeling tools, en-US saws, drills, Dremels, knives, file sets.en-US Other fun hobby items include sci-fi kits en-US related to Star Wars, Star Trek, and fighting en-US robots. For budding artists, Riverside Hoben-US-en-US bies has a huge selection of paint-by-numen-US -en-US bers. One of the big sellers now is paint-by-en-US numbers kits to create paintings of animals.en-US Theres also a large paint department with en-US anything youd want to spruce up models.en-US Were an old fashioned hobby store, Mr. en-US Woolwine said. We have everything you en-US remember from hobby stores as a kid. en-US Other big sellers include wooden model en-US kits for civil war cannons, submarines, and en-US ships. I sold two ship kits this morning to en-US an older guy who couldnt sleep at night and en-US just needed something to do!en-US Riverside Hobbies buys and sells used and en-US new train sets, including Lionel trains from en-US olden days and newer, smaller trains.en-US The store is filled with a huge inventory of en-US things older folks will remember from their en-US childhood. Parts for assembling balsa wood en-USairplanes brought this reporter right back to en-US a simpler time, when one could spend an en-US entire weekend figuring out how to tilt the en-US wooden wing so that a balsa glider would en-US make a big loop and return right back to en-US where you stood.en-US Riverside Hobbies is located at 250 Sebasen-US -en-US tian Blvd. (County Road 512), Sebastian. en-US Call (772) 581-4778 or visit them on Faceen-US -en-US book for more information. The en-US writer asks why his neighbor mows the lawn en-US so early in the AM, sometimes at 7:30 even. en-US The reason people do outside chores early in en-US the morning is because it is too hot in the en-US late morning and afternoon. Try mowing en-US the lawn at 7:30 in the morning, then the en-US next time try doing it at 2:00 PM. You will en-US quickly find out earlier is better, before the en-US sun is burning high overhead. You should en-US be happy your neighbor is mowing at an en-US early hour as opposed to having knee-high en-US grass in his yard.en-USDiscounts for serviceen-USI was waiting in line to pay for some meren-US -en-US chandise the other day when the customer en-US ahead of me asked if they gave discounts to en-US retired law enforcement officers. The clerk en-US replied, Yes, we give fifteen percent disen-US -en-US counts to Police, Fire Fighters, and Veterans en-US current and retired. He was given the disen-US -en-US count and thanked the clerk. When I was en-US checking out I asked if they gave discounts en-US to teachers. The clerk quickly told me no. en-US The person standing behind me in line en-US commented that teachers should be includen-US -en-US ed in the list for discounts especially in this en-US day and age.en-US Why arent teachers given the same en-US respect, status or privilege as law enforceen-US -en-US ment, fire fighters, and veterans? They en-US touch the lives of all children and help shape en-US them into future adults. They are and have en-US been one of the most important contribuen-US -en-US tors in making America the Nation it is en-US today. They certainly dont get wealthy in en-US their profession. I hope and pray corporaen-US -en-US tions and business owners reconsider who en-US they include on their list of those they feel en-US deserve the perk of a discount for their years en-US of service in helping shape the youth and en-US future of our country.en-USAnother approachen-USYes, cutting the grass that early is inconen-US -en-US siderate and ignorant. Early morning cuten-US -en-US ting damages and weakens the grass and en-US rusts the equipment. What can be done? en-US Report him/her to Code Enforcement, en-US HOA, or local PD most have noise/disturen-US -en-US bance ordinances. You will need documenen-US -en-US tation for a lawsuit. Unfortunately, the only en-US way to deal with a bully is to out bully them. en-US Or it could be early Alzheimer's???? Enlist en-US the support of your fellow neighbors. This en-US person may need a mental health elavuation en-US (Baker Act). Also, consider installing the en-US tallest fence possible along the adjoining en-US property lines and buy a boxfan to provide en-US 'white noise.' Appealing directly to the bully en-US or their spouse won't work she probably en-US doesn't want him around either. I also live en-US next to the neighborhood bully family love en-US the fact they have installed an illegal, wired en-US utility building, a driveway less than 2 ft en-US from the property line, done their own roof en-US work and are completely ignoring the counen-US -en-US ty fertilizer ban code enforcement is only en-US one anonymous phone call away. All else en-US fails? Install an exterior sound system that en-US plays nothing but metal, rap, Gregorian en-US chants, etc, only on that side of your properen-US -en-US ty all day, every day within sound level and en-US hours permitted. Plants love music!en-USDo your part so we all have a en-US cooler, better planeten-USThe globe is in fact getting warmer at an en-US alarming rate historically and man is having en-US an impact. Just walk outside. Its amazing en-US that some people want to deny it.en-US I would prefer to believe scientists over en-US the oil funded politicians. The Paris Accords en-US were agreed to by all the countries in the en-US world except ours.en-US Ill bet these non-believers dont recycle en-US either. Do your part so we all have a better en-US planet.en-USHats off to humane societyen-USRecently I had to take a rescue kitten to en-US the Humane Society and got to see how en-US compassionate and caring they all are. I am en-US an animal lover and I could not work there en-US because I would want to bring every animal en-US home. If you have it in your heart to donate en-US your time or, better yet, adopt a pet or give a en-US donation, please do. These animals need us.en-USKnow overdose symptoms so en-US proper actions can be takenen-USOverdoses are happening everywhere, all en-US over the country. In our current society, the en-US streets are filled to the brim with ultra-en-US strong heroin thats often mixed with fenen-US-en-US tanyl and a multitude of its analogues, maken-US -en-US ing life saving efforts, like Narcan, futile en-US when trying to reverse an overdose.en-US The thing is, overdoses dont just happen en-US in the bathroom or bedroom at home. In en-US fact, many people who overdose do so in en-US public areas. Overdoses can happen in the en-US grocery store, in the car, at a shopping mall en-US. just about anywhere. Overdoses happen en-US when a person has taken more opiates (or en-US opioids) than their body can handle. en-US 8 The pitfalls of en-USwireless printingen-USWen-USireless printers seem to be all the en-US rage these days and why not? en-US The convenience of being able to en-US place your printer anywhere in the room, en-US even in another room altogether and still be en-US able to print, makes them very appealing en-US indeed. And with just about everyone en-US equipped with a wireless router today, en-US picking a printer that is WiFi enabled en-US makes sense. To top it off, the technology en-US has gotten so common that it can be hard to en-US find a printer that is not wireless capable. en-US On the surface wireless printing looks en-US like a great idea but, like most things en-US computer related, it comes with a price; in en-US this case, the price is a combination of en-US reliability and complexity. en-US I say reliability because wireless printers en-US are notorious for dropping off line for no en-US apparent reason. Usually right when en-US something important needs to be printed, en-US like an airline boarding pass or court en-US document, you go to print and nothing. en-US Worked fine yesterday but today, not so en-US much. en-US Now I know that some of you are reading en-US this and thinking what? Ive been using a en-US wireless printer for years and have never en-US had a problem! and to you I say Great en-US job! but keep in mind, people dont call me en-US when its working, they call me when it en-US stops and I hear it from different people all en-US the time. And its typically the same story en-US every time wireless printer, working fine en-US yesterday, something really important en-US needs to be printed today and now, en-US nothing Or a message pops up telling en-US you the computer cant communicate with en-US the printer but it doesnt matter, the end en-US result is the same nothing comes out of en-US the printer. Thats when I get the call. en-US I mentioned complexity as being the en-US second trade off and heres where that en-US comes in. When you connect a printer to en-US your computer with a wire (a USB printer en-US cable with one end plugged into the back of en-US the printer and the other end plugged into a en-US USB port on the computer) thats often all en-US there is to it. Unless something goes wrong, en-US your computer should automatically detect en-US the printer and set it up, most often without en-US having to click a thing. en-US On the other hand, when you set up a en-US wireless printer, you have all the added en-US complexity of having to connect the printer en-US to your WiFi router first and that, dependen-US -en-US ing on the make and model of the printer, en-US can involve anything from having to type in en-US your wifi password on a little control panel en-US on the front of the printer to needing to en-US plug the printer into the computer with a en-US printer cable anyway and then use the en-US computer to program the printer for wifi en-US access. Then you have to go to the computen-US -en-US er and try to find and connect to the printer en-US over the network. And when it does go en-US offline for no apparent reason, you may en-US find yourself reconnecting it to your WiFi en-US router all over again. en-US There are so many things that can knock en-US a wireless device off line I couldnt possibly en-US list them all here. Some of the more en-US common reasons are power fluctuations en-US that cause the equipment to restart, some en-US cordless phones can cause a sort of en-US jamming that can cause a printer to drop en-US off line and even microwave interference en-US can suddenly cause a device to drop offline.en-US The cause doesnt really matter the point en-US that Im trying to make is that the wireless en-US connection is way more fragile and easily en-US broken than the traditional printer cable en-US jammed into the back of the computer. Sure en-US there are times when a wired printer drops en-US off line but when that happens, resetting en-US the device usually just means unplugging it en-US and plugging it back in. With a wireless en-US device, you often find yourself back at en-US square one trying to re join the printer to en-US the wireless network. en-US I have a rule of thumb when it comes to en-US printers; Even if the printer is capable of en-US running wirelessly, if its going to be in the COMPUTE THIS en-USSEAN MCCARTHY en-USproducts containing iron and other microen-US -en-US nutrients that you can use, and you can en-US compost. To be in compliance, the fertilizer en-US must contain no phosphorous. The fertilizer en-US content is listed on each label as three numen-US-en-US bers. This corresponds to the percentage of en-US nitrogen, phosphorous, and potash, respecen-US -en-US tively, or N-P-K. Visit en-US www.ircstormwater.en-US comen-US for details and a list of approved proden-US -en-US ucts.en-US Another general rule is that fertilizer en-US should never be applied within ten feet of en-US any wetland or water body, or from the top en-US of a seawall. Spreader deflector shields are en-US required when fertilizing using rotary en-US spreaders.en-US Fertilizer may not be applied, spilled, or en-US otherwise deposited on any impervious suren-US -en-US faces. Fertilizer must be kept out of stormen-US -en-US water drains, ditches, and all water bodies. en-US Grass clippings, vegetative material or en-US debris must also be kept out of stormwater en-US drains, ditches, water bodies, wetlands, sideen-US -en-US walks and roadways.en-US Commercial fertilizer applicators are en-US required to carry in their possession evien-US -en-US dence that they have completed a training en-US program in the Florida-friendly Best Manen-US -en-US agement Practices for Protection of Water en-US Resources by the Green Industries offered en-US by the Florida Department of Environmenen-US -en-US tal Protection through the University of en-US Florida Extension Florida-Friendly Landen-US -en-US scapes program, or an approved equivalent.en-US Even outside the ban period, you should en-US never fertilize before a rain. Rain does not en-US set in fertilizer, it just washes it away. And en-US you should only use fertilizers that contain en-US at least 50 percent slow release nitrogen and en-US that contain no phosphorous. Florida soils en-US are naturally rich in phosphorous.en-US The county Stormwater Division recomen-US-en-US mends fertilizing only twice a year, in Octoen-US -en-US ber near the end of the growing season, and en-US in April at the start of the growing season. en-US Better yet, replace grass and exotic plants en-US with Florida native plants that require little en-US or no fertilizing.en-US For more information, visit en-US www.ircen-US-en-US stormwater.com en-US or contact the county Stormen-US -en-US water Division at (772) 226-1562.en-USFertilizeen-USFrom page 1 en-USSeeen-US en-US COMPUTEen-US page 9

I know how expensive en-US golf travel can be. Fortunately, en-US over the years I have learned a few tricks to en-US keep costs down without sacrificing fun. en-US With summer here, I am betting many of en-US us, myself included, will be hitting the en-US highways and airways in search of rest, en-US relaxation, and golf.en-US Probably the best way to save money is to en-US travel with a group. Get as many of your en-US golf buddies to join you on your trip. Larger en-US groups will find that they have leverage en-US when it comes to negotiating lower prices en-US for rooms, food, and golf.en-US If you have hotel or credit card points en-US check to see what benefits they give you. en-US Some credit card companies offer free room en-US upgrades, or discounted greens fees at en-US many resorts. If more than one in your en-US group has a free or discounted night en-US coming at a hotel, you could combine these en-US to get several nights out of your stay for free en-US or greatly reduced.en-US Check with your home club. Many these en-US days are managed by a company that has en-US many courses in its portfolio. See if you get en-US discounted golf at other courses owned or en-US managed by the same company.en-US Ask about unlimited golf packages. Many en-US resorts offer these in off-peak seasons to en-US entice business. There are also packages en-US that include lunch, drinks, and discounted en-US replays.en-US If you really want to avoid the big money en-US greens fees, steer away from the resorts en-US advertised on television or that tout their en-US Home of the Blah Blah Championship en-US layout. While it may be fun to say that you en-US played these courses, you will almost en-US always pay a premium to do so. National en-US advertising is expensive, as is maintaining en-USthe course in those fantastic conditions. In en-US the end it all gets passed down to the en-US customer.en-US If you havent played in a while, avoid en-US playing your first round on an expensive, en-US plush course. Take advantage of the en-US municipal courses and use that round to en-US knock off the rust from not picking up a en-US club for so long.en-US While its nice to be prepared and have en-US most everything planned and thought-out, en-US its to your benefit to leave some time open en-US for a last-minute round. Once an empty tee en-US time is gone, it is gone. Many courses offer en-US deep discounts if you call to fill one of those en-US spots at just the right time. There are also en-US several apps that allow you to find tee times en-US at the very last moment and book they on en-US your phone while your buddy drives to the en-US course.en-US Plan your trip for mid-week. Prices on en-US travel, hotels and golf are always higher on en-US the weekends. Besides, it will get you away en-US from the office for a couple extra days.en-US Make sure that everyone is comfortable en-US with everything that is planned. There are en-US times when the guys with the deepest en-US pockets want everyone to eat at a more en-US expensive restaurant, stay at a fancier place, en-US play the more expensive courses. While you en-US dont want to make one person feel en-US unwelcome, you certainly dont want to let en-US one person have all the say.en-US Next to golf, food can be the most en-US expensive part of your trip. Look for en-US accommodations that have a kitchen which en-US allows you to cook meals. Find coupons for en-US discounted meals or even visit restaurants en-US websites and sign up with their emails to en-US get discounts for your first visit.en-US Look for courses that offer walking. You en-US may not want to walk in the summer heat en-US of the south, but walking a course in a more en-US temperate climate is not only good for your en-US wallet, but for your health as well.en-US Consider playing in the afternoon. Rates en-US are cheaper in the afternoon and you can en-US shop around for those last-minute deals I en-US talked about earlier. Additionally, it allows en-US you to sleep in. Its easy to get worn out on a en-US golf trip. Late nights playing poker with the en-US gang, or just hanging out late, coupled with en-US early tee times will quickly run you down.en-US If you have a group that is spread all over en-US the country or across several states, you en-US could consider rotating between staying at en-US one members home one trip and then en-US another the next and so on. Youd all save en-US on accommodations, and could put that en-US savings toward better courses or a feast on en-US your final night. Just remember to show en-US your appreciation to the host and be as en-US accommodating when it becomes your en-US turn.en-US These are just a few things that I have en-US learned over the years. Please, share yours en-US with me and Ill pass along the good word. en-US Happy travels!en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. en-US 16 en-USI en-UScame home after work one day and en-US started thinking about dinner and what en-US I would prepare that evening just like I en-US always do. en-US You all probably know by now. I do all en-US the cooking at home, which is great because en-US my wife does everything else. She pays the en-US bills, handles anything about the house and en-US family, and we are both happy with our en-US lives. en-US I try to keep the refrigerator stocked with en-US different foods, and the pantry is always full en-US because I like to visit my favorite stores en-US several times during the week. I always have en-US fresh food to choose from. I usually cook en-US seafood twice a week, so I decided it was en-US seafood day. en-US Now lets see, my mother-in-law likes en-US salmon, so I will make her teriyaki salmon en-US with fruit chutney. My wife loves farm-en-US raised catfish with lemon and dill, so I have en-US her covered. Ill make a fresh salad the way en-US my family likes with hearts of lettuce, en-US English cucumber, heirloom tomatoes, en-US orange slices and feta cheese. Oh yes, they en-US like my home-made salad dressing (which I en-US will share with you later). en-US Now for the boys and me. Oh! I know! I en-US have some chicken breasts, so Ill make en-US some fried chicken tenders with sweet en-US potato fries. That should cover everyone en-US except the two cats, and I even brought en-US home two bags of dry food that was on sale en-US (but my boys will feed the cats). en-US It was at about this time when it hit me, en-US Oh my goodness, Ive opened a restaurant en-US in my own kitchen and the family is en-US ordering off the daily menu! How did this en-US happen what have I done I started en-US thinking this has to stop! And then reality en-US hit me in the face again. Wait a minute, hold en-US on. I dont have to cut the grass or take out en-US the trash or deal with the house or make en-US doctor appointments or fill out the income en-US tax forms or make any travel arrangements en-US and the list goes on and on. en-US I think I better keep my mouth shut and en-US keep the restaurant open. Im thinking of en-US extending the hours and offering an en-US early-bird menu on special days and Sunday en-US morning brunch! en-US Now for that special dressing...en-USCOSTAS SALAD DRESSINGen-USIngredientsen-US 1/2-cup orange juiceen-US 1/4-cup Asian rice vinegaren-US 1/2-cup Mirin, Japanese-style wineen-US 1/4-cup soy sauceen-US 1/4-cup olive oilen-US Salt and pepper to taste en-US Directionsen-US Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix en-US well.en-US Costa Magoulas is dean of the Mori en-US Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary en-US Management at Daytona State College. en-US Contact him at (386) 506-3578 or en-US magoulc@en-US daytonastate.edu.
