It wont cost en-US as much next time. We had to go back in en-US time to collect 22 years worth of data. en-US That was a huge effort that took over a en-US year, and to assemble the data base and en-US do all the data cleaning. This is a commuen-US -en-US nity-funded project.en-US Dr. Souto outlined the questions the en-US report card seeks to address.en-US We wanted to first answer whether the en-US data even existed to assess the health of the en-US lagoon. Next, do current regulations adeen-US -en-US quately protect the lagoon? Which areas of en-US the lagoon are better than others? Are we en-US seeing a change in the lagoons health over en-US time? Ultimately, we wanted to answer the en-US question we get every day: is the lagoon geten-US-en-US ting better or worse?en-US The public needs to know if our efforts, en-US our restoration strategies, are paying off. We en-US know its going to take a long time to bring en-US the lagoons health back, and we want to en-US demonstrate whether what were doing is en-US working. When we find a year where things en-US looked good, were trying to figure out why en-US that was so.en-US While many of the scientific conclusions en-US wont be revealed until the report comes out, en-US Dr. Souto said one conclusion is that the en-US economic downturn in recent years crippled en-US research into the health of the lagoon.en-US We noticed the availability of data has en-US actually decreased over time, Dr. Souto en-US said. As the lagoons health has gotten en-US worse, there have been fewer resources deden-US-en-US icated by the state to monitor its health, en-US instead of more resources. Its as though a en-US doctor said to you youre really sick, so en-US were going to stop taking your temperature en-US now. It was shocking to see that agency en-US monitoring and collection of data would en-US just disappear over time due to funding en-US cuts.en-US We concluded that there is not enough en-US data to fully assess the lagoons health. Were en-US not only losing monitor stations, but they en-US stopped monitoring for some important en-US public health things like bacteria. We dont en-US know whether people should be swimming en-US in the lagoon or eating fish out of the lagoon. en-US Nobodys monitoring for some key parameen-US -en-US ters.en-US All the data we used in the report card en-US came from professional state agencies, the en-US most valid data you can find.en-US With the downturn in the state economy en-US around 2010, Dr. Souto said, Florida state en-US agencies had their budgets drastically cut. en-US The state water management districts lost en-US over 1,000 employees.en-US We have two water management districts en-US that cover the lagoon. They couldnt continen-US-en-US ue the same data collection mission with en-US such a heavily modified budget. I have to en-US commend the St. Johns Water Management en-US District because they really tried to strategien-US-en-US cally pick which stations to de-commission. en-US But the bottom line is we need more data.en-US For the report, Dr. Souto assembled a en-US team of dozens of scientists, nearly 100 peoen-US-en-US ple in all to help provide the data we needen-US -en-US ed, to understand the data, and to quality en-US assure the data. There was a team of peer en-US review scientists assembled by the National en-US Estuary Program to make sure our scientific en-US methods were good.en-US At the May 22 Friends of Sebastian River en-US talk, Dr. Souto will discuss both government en-US solutions and things we can all do, such as en-US knowing when to fertilize, what kind of en-US chemicals or herbicides to use, and getting en-US septic tanks inspected. Dr. Souto will disen-US-en-US cuss plumbing maintenance homeowners en-US can do in their own home to help. Dr. Souto en-US will also offer tips like taking your car to a en-US car wash instead of washing it in your driveen-US -en-US way. Shell answer the most common quesen-US-en-US tions, such as which areas of the lagoon are en-US getting better or worse.en-US Dr. Leesa Souto will present and answer en-US questions about the Indian River Lagoon en-US Report Card May 22, 6 p.m., at the North en-US County Library, 1001 Sebastian Blvd., en-US Sebastian. VERO BEACH When we last visited en-USwith Fine Line II Collision & Paint in Vero en-US Beach a few years ago, owner Tony Buxton en-US was fixing up a car to donate to a needy local en-US veteran. When we checked in this week, the en-US community-minded shop was again in the en-US process of helping a local veteran.en-US The owners husband passed away, and en-US he was a veteran, so she asked us to fix it up en-US to give to another veteran, Mr. Buxton told en-US Hometown News. Well be looking for a en-US local vet to donate this to as soon as I fix it en-US up.en-US That civic-minded spirit contributes to a en-US business where everyone seems to be laughen-US -en-US ing and smiling. You only en-US get that if youre in en-US the top four or en-US five percent of en-US shops in Florida. en-US We averaged suren-US -en-US vey scores of 9.9 en-US out of 10 from 146 en-US people surveyed. en-US They were surveyed on things like quality of en-US work, shop care, vehicle delivered on time, en-US whether customer was kept informed en-US throughout the process, and referring the en-US shop to family and friends.en-US Those referrals seem to be driving more en-US than just ratings. They are the bread-and-en-US butter of the business.en-US Most of the work we do is referrals from en-US customers where Ive worked on their car, a en-US neighbor or family members car, Mr. Buxen-US -en-US ton said. That way, en-US the panic about high winds can be narrowed en-US to a small area instead of wide spread panic.en-USBrightlineen-USIt seems fighting against Brightline has en-US had another side effect for the Treasure en-US Coast, not only will we not be getting a train en-US station here to slow it down on its way to en-US Orlando and Disney to connect a metropolen-US -en-US itan area of 6 million with a metro area of 3 en-US million, now we won't be silencing our en-US horns any time soon the way cities to our en-US South are about to. en-US According to the Palm Beach newspaper's en-US May 10th headlines, Brightline's upgrades en-US are about to silence train horns on FCC en-US tracks in six out of seven cities beginning en-US really soon. en-US Anybody living within a mile of the tracks en-US knows the nightly assault on the ears hearen-US -en-US ing those horns blaring in the silence of the en-US night at two, three and four o'clock in the en-US morning. Many must be regretting the decien-US -en-US sion to fight against the trains coming by en-US here and the silencing of the horns that en-US would have brought us. Now as these trains en-US approach, they'll keep mercilessly blaring en-US their horns as hard as they possibly could en-US during the wee hours of the morning just en-US remind us of our stupidity and the transfer en-US of wealth to the lawyers' pockets fighting en-US this losing war. You ain't stopping this train, en-US sorry, ain't going to happen. Fight for a train en-US station instead.en-USIts time to shine light on en-US supporters of burning oil, coalen-USIts absolutely a shame that the state with en-US the most sunshine has no incentive to put a en-US solar roof top installation on every house. en-US Youll hear stupid arguments about taxpayen-US-en-US ers helping but they are silent on the BILen-US -en-US LIONS in incentives still given to oil and en-US coal. Even with the Republicans against en-US renewables they are 18 percent of the Ameren-US -en-US ican grid and growing.en-US We eventually will get there while the en-US dummies kick and scream the whole way en-US burning oil and coal. Its time to vote them en-US out.en-USGet off the curb to curben-USMany dog owners have no idea what curb en-US your dog really means. They seem to think it en-US means they stand at the curb area and let en-US their dogs wonder around in the middle of en-US private property attached to a 16to 26-foot en-US retractable leash.en-US True, some good owners pick up the en-US stinky gooey excrement, but many just conen-US -en-US tinue on to let their dogs urinate on as many en-US mailbox posts as possible leaving us the en-US odor behind in the hot Florida sun. Have en-US some consideration folks.en-USTurn signalsen-USMost drivers in Florida do not know what en-US a turn signal is. They prefer to have other en-US motorists guess what they intend to do.en-US A ticket for an improper turn/lane change en-US costs $131. If law enforcement would en-US enforce those laws not only would they genen-US -en-US erate some much needed revenue, but we en-US would probably see a lot more twinkling of en-US turn signals.en-USAnthony Inswasty/staff photographeren-USIndian River County Sheriff Richard Henson and his K-9 partner en-US Falko demonstrate some of the departments techniques. Find way to keep guns en-USout of the wrong handsen-USI am quite surprised that Florida has not en-US taken any action regarding guns getting into en-US wrong hands.en-US With two massive shootings in our Sunen-US -en-US shine state, our lawmakers have not taken a en-US stern action to curb gun violence. When we en-US sent our children to school many decades en-US ago, nothing came to our mind whether our en-US children return from school or getting shot en-US by a miserable human being.en-US Yesterday I saw a gun show in my neighen-US -en-US borhood and I saw the display of all kinds of en-US assault weapons. I started wondering what if en-US a weapon gets to a wrong person?en-US After the recent Parkland shooting, our en-US state lawmakers are just keeping quiet by en-US not instituting a law to curb gun violence. en-US Also, another State law of STAND YOUR en-US GROUND LAW is plain silly and stupid.en-US God created us and God is the only peren-US -en-US son have rights to take our life away. I sent en-US letters to Gov. Scott with no response. What en-US if our governor's child gets shot?en-US It's about time that our country should en-US wake up and curb gun violence and let paren-US -en-US ents have peace of mind.en-US A stern law should be initiated at the feden-US-en-US eral level and government should take conen-US-en-US trol of who is a candidate to own guns and en-US keep them from getting into the wrong en-US hands.en-USFriendly reminderen-USPlease drivers, slower traffic should move en-US to the right. en-US Despite the speed limit, if you have someen-US -en-US one on your tail in the left lane, move to the en-US right lane. The en-US time to plan for that potential blow is now, en-US well before a system is heading our way. en-US Not only is it important to prepare your en-US home, but it is equally important to prepare en-US your yard.en-US The first thing you should do as the en-US season begins is to trim all your trees and en-US bushes. One note of caution, never do your en-US trimming when there is a named storm in en-US the Atlantic. The trimmed debris may not en-US be picked up in time and could be potential en-US missiles in the event the storm hits your en-US area. en-US Get rid of any foliage that is dead or en-US might be hanging over your house. If you en-US have any dead or weak trees from last years en-US storms, cut them down so they dont have a en-US chance to do damage this year. en-US Take a tour of your yard and make a list en-US of items that would be dangerous to leave en-US lying around. This list should include patio en-US furniture, loose garden ornaments, small en-US potted plants, yard torches, arbors and even en-US your gas grill. Make a list so you know en-US ahead of time what you will have to move.en-US If you own a swimming pool, you can en-US throw all your patio furniture into the pool en-US to help keep it from traveling across en-US Florida. en-US If you have a shed or gazebo, you might en-US want to add extra tie downs to be sure they en-US will stay put and dont wind up in Kansas.en-US You can start early by limiting what you en-US keep out in your yard during the peak en-US months of August and September. Make en-US your yard as secure as possible, as this will en-US help to reduce potential damage to your en-US home.en-US There are many plants you can put in en-US your yard that are attractive and also seem en-US to hold up fairly well during a hurricane. en-US Hibiscus, Plumbago, Firecracker plant, en-US Ixoria, and even my roses seemed to hold en-US up very well during our past hurricanes. en-US You may also want to consider some native en-US plant varieties such as Palmetto Bush, en-US Passionflower, Azalea Bush, Wax Myrtle, en-US Live Oak and Southern Magnolia. Native en-US plants are used to the high winds that can en-US hit during hurricane season since they have en-US been around our area for so many years. en-US They also add a natural beauty to your en-US yard.en-US If you live near the ocean, planting en-US becomes even more of a challenge because en-US you need to have plants that are resistant to en-US salt spray. Remember that a hurricane can en-US carry the ocean mist far inland with its en-US 70+-mph winds. Plant varieties such as en-US Indian Hawthorne, Saw Palmetto, Confeden-US -en-US erate Jasmine, Society Garlic, Daylily, en-US Pittisporum, Oleander and Mexican en-US Petunia can do very well in areas where salt en-US spray can be a problem. Gardenia plants en-US also can fare well with less than 25 percent en-US damage and full recovery after one growing en-US season.en-US If you plan on installing any new trees en-US this close to the start of the hurricane en-US season, you should plan ahead on their en-US location. Plant the trees where they wont en-US potentially cause a problem for your en-US structure. Be sure to anchor your trees en-US carefully with ties if they are newly planted en-US to help prevent damage in the event of high en-US winds.en-US As you can see, with a few common sense en-US tips and some good planning, you can have en-US both an attractive and safe yard this en-US hurricane season. Remember, the Atlantic en-US hurricane season begins June 1, 2018. en-US For tropical updates visit en-US http://homeen-US-en-US townweather.net.en-US en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US 14 en-USVERO BEACH Your Call Football en-US completed its brief inaugural season at Doden-US-en-US gertown with three games on May 3, 10, and en-US 17. If the president of Your Call, Inc., and en-US the County Commissioners have their way, en-US the upstart league will be back to make Vero en-US Beach its home.en-US Your Call Football can be summed up in en-US four simple words: fans call the plays, en-US league President Julie Meringer told an en-US enthusiastic County Commissioners meeten-US-en-US ing May 1. If youve ever watched a long en-US NFL game and youve been bored or frusen-US -en-US trated, this is for you.en-US YCF integrates three businesses: the en-US business of football, the business of fantasy, en-US and the business of gaming, bringing it en-US together for the first time. And were doing en-US that all here in your backyard.en-US Ms. Meringer compared YCF to reality en-US TV, where viewers are given some control, en-US and fantasy TV like Game of Thrones, comen-US-en-US bined with gaming apps.en-US We believe YCF will completely change en-US how fans participate in and impact live footen-US -en-US ball, said Ms. Meringer. To date, no one en-US else has been able to create a real-time envien-US -en-US ronment where fans control a live game en-US while offering such a seamless user experien-US -en-US ence.en-US There is something happening with realen-US -en-US ity TV allowing fans to control the game, en-US and this is where YCF comes in. Our busien-US -en-US ness model, our differentiator, is we are en-US allowing fans to have control of a live event.en-US County Commissioner Peter OBryan en-US joked that the new league will expand the en-US world of some of his colleagues.en-US About a year ago, en-US Commissioner Solari en-US finally got a cell en-US phone, Comm. en-US OBryan said. And en-US Ive been on a 12-year en-US quest to get Comm. en-US Solari up to speed on en-US sports, and football. en-US So this combines all en-US of that. This is going en-US to be right up your en-US alley, Comm. OBryan en-US said to Comm. Solari.en-US The games feature two teams so far, en-US coached by former Green Bay Packers coach en-US and GM Mike Sherman and former NFL en-US running back and ESPN analyst Merril en-US Hoge. Of the roughly 80 players, more than en-US half have NFL experience and nearly 90 peren-US -en-US cent played at a Division 1 Bowl Subdivision en-US program.en-US Mr. Hoge played eight years in the NFL en-US with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago en-US Bears and spent more than two decades as en-US an analyst for a variety of ESPN programs.en-US YCF truly represents the future of the fan en-US experience, and Im thrilled to be involved, en-US said Mr. Hoge. I know from my days on the en-US field and in the analyst studio how much en-US fans want to get in the game and really show en-US how knowledgeable they are.en-US During the games, fans use a phone app en-US to vote on three coach-selected plays that en-US Mr. Sherman and Mr. Hoge send via an en-US iPad, then watch as the majority-voted play en-US is executed live on the field by YCFs players. en-US Points are accumulated based on play-callen-US -en-US ing skills, and fans are encouraged to initiate en-US head-to-head competitions and leagues en-US with their friends for the chance to win cash en-US prizes.en-US Although Ms. Meringer said that the en-US league had discussions with two TV neten-US -en-US works, We are not on a TV network, en-US because TV stations have about a 17-second en-US delay, and I need zero delay. You can watch en-US it in the app, at Your Call Football website, en-US or on YouTube.en-US Discussing the first game at Dodgertown, en-US Ms. Meringer said we had over 700 fans all en-US over the U.S. on their phones and voting in en-US real time. Fans had 10 seconds to vote on en-US the play, and then its run it on the field. If en-US you voted with the majority and that play is en-US successful, you accumulate points.en-US Players include former NFL starters Roben-US -en-US ert Meachem and Bernard Pierce. Other en-US former NFL players on the roster include en-US QB BJ Daniels, QB Jerrod Johnson, DT en-US Ashaad Mabry, LB Greg Lloyd Jr., TE Evan en-US Rodriguez, OT Vincent Brown, CB Khalid en-US Wooten, RB Cyrus Gray, DT Micanor Regis, en-US LB Will Smith and RB Kenny Hilliard.en-US I was excited to have an opportunity to en-US play for one of Your Call Footballs teams, en-US said Mr. Meachem, who played seven years en-US in the NFL, including six with the New en-US Orleans Saints. Not only is this an amazing en-US new concept that really connects fans and en-US players, its an opportunity to continue to en-US play and showcase my skills to scouts.en-US Ms. Meringer said that Dodgertown was en-US the perfect spot for the league, and she en-US hopes they will return following the inauguen-US-en-US ral season.en-US This community is fantastic. We started en-US looking for a place to house live football and en-US integrative technology about two years ago. en-US There arent a lot of great options around the en-US United States that offer a campus-type envien-US en-USronment where you can do sports and do en-US physical training. Dodgertown has been a en-US home run. She praised everyone in the en-US community and noted that Your Call has en-US been employing sheriffs and other local en-US businesses.en-US We tried to give back to this community en-US in our short window. We had Dodgertown en-US 4th and 5th grade elementary students over, en-US we sponsored and donated to that school en-US and we brought these students on campus to en-US see the football players and talk about whats en-US happening with sports and technology.en-US Ms. Meringer added that everyone en-US involved stayed at local hotels and ate at en-US local residents every Wednesday through en-US Friday in May.en-US Just in lodging at Dodgertown itself, we en-US have over 100 people there. Our business en-US model calls for us to run multiple series like en-US this per year and were in talks now with en-US Dodgertown about how do we get back en-US here. This could be our home, which would en-US be fantastic. Its hard to find a place like en-US Dodgertown. There are not a lot of them en-US that exist. Were running an NFL-style trainen-US -en-US ing camp right here in your backyard.en-US This is a great economic shot in the arm en-US for the community, Comm. OBryan said.en-US After the presentation, Comm. Solari en-US joked about how this could threaten their en-US jobs, if a similar system were set up for the en-US County Commission. He foresaw the day en-US that people could watch commission meeten-US -en-US ings on an app and vote to replace a comen-US -en-US missioner. We wont be needed, Comm. en-US Solari said. en-US 15 en-USI en-USguess chefs have mellowed over the en-US years or maybe they are just getting en-US smarter. Lets face it, we are in the en-US hospitality business and the customer is en-US what drives our success. In todays changen-US -en-US ing world, we need to be better informed en-US and knowledgeable about all foods and en-US trends. In the U.S. there are around 7 en-US million vegetarians, however, studies en-US indicate about one third of Americans en-US going out to eat will choose a vegetarian en-US dish. We also need to understand what kind en-US of vegetarians are out there: en-US Lacto-vegetariandiets exclude meat, fish, en-US poultry and eggs as well as foods that en-US contain them. Dairy products, such as milk, en-US cheese, yogurt, and butter, are included. en-US Lacto-ovo vegetariandiets exclude meat, en-US fish and poultry, but allow dairy products en-US and eggs. The phone rings, you drop en-US what youre doing and run to answer it en-US and the voice on the other end tells you en-US that hes from Microsoft and that your en-US computer is infected and sending messagen-US -en-US es. And hes calling you to fix it. Or so he en-US says, but the fact of the matter is that there en-US is no one at Microsoft, Google, AOL or any en-US other company out there thats going to call en-US you out of the blue to tell you that you have en-US computer problems. It is always a scam. en-US Always. No matter how sincere or official en-US they sound, it is always a scam! en-US Scammers these days know all they have en-US to do is call enough phone numbers at en-US random and tell whoever answers Im en-US calling from Microsoft to fix your computen-US -en-US er and someone is going to believe them. en-US Not everyone, but enough. If they call 100 en-US people they know theres a pretty good en-US chance that one or two are going to fall for en-US it and thats enough to keep it going. en-US So, what happens next? What happens en-US when a person gets the call and they dont en-US recognize it as a scam? Well it can vary but en-US there are a couple of tactics that they use to en-US convince you of their legitimacy. They may en-US walk you through opening the computers en-US Event Log and showing you thousands of en-US errors and warnings. Oh my, see? These en-US are all signs that your computer is infected en-US they will tell you and then tell you how en-US urgent it is to let them connect so they can en-US repair it. Then they walk you to a website en-US where they can connect to your machine en-US using Log-me-in, Teamviewer, Join.me or en-US some other remote access tool. Once they en-US are connected they continue the tour, en-US showing you normal (but scary looking!) en-US system logs and tools and tell you again that en-US these normal things are signs of trouble. en-US en-US The longer they keep you on the phone the en-US longer they have to work on what they are en-US really after and thats talking you out of en-US your money. en-US Things can really get out of control if en-US they manage to connect with a remote en-US access tool because then you dont know en-US what they are doing to your system. Face it, en-US if you dont know the difference between en-US whats normal in a system vs. whats not en-US then how are you going to tell if the guy (a en-US complete stranger) connected to your en-US machine is helping it or harming it? Will en-US you be able to tell if the software that hes en-US installing to clean your machine is really a en-US cleaner? Or is it a tool hes installing to get a en-US foot in your door for later?en-US Then, when hes finished, hes going to en-US want to get paid. Fair enough, no one works en-US for free but wait a minute, how do you en-US know if he even did anything? If you dont en-US understand what he was talking about or en-US what he was doing and you didnt even call en-US him in the first place, how can you justify en-US paying them? Usually, after they get done en-US cleaning your computer they will hit you en-US with a bill usually running around $300 and en-US you wouldnt believe how many people fall en-US for it and pay the money. For nothing. Now en-US the scammers have not only your money en-US but also your credit card info. And if they en-US do their convincing just right, you wont en-US even think you got scammed.en-US So, if your phone rings and there is en-US someone on the other end telling you he or en-US she is from Microsoft and your computer is en-US reporting errors, hang up. You dont need to en-US pick up the phone and call anyone else to en-US ask and no, you dont need to have your en-US computer checked just in case. It was a en-US scammer and he picked your number at en-US random and your computer is not in en-US trouble.en-US Or you can have fun with them. I used to en-US play with them. Id act like I was following en-US their instructions but then start screaming en-US that the computer has burst into flames!! en-US when I open the event log. They love that en-US one. Or Ill tell them to hold while I reboot en-US my computer and then come back and en-US check up on them after 10 minutes or so but en-US lately Ive just gotten tired of it and now I en-US just hang up when they call. And thats what en-US you should do too. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. He can be en-US reached at 888-752-9049 oren-US help@Compuen-US -en-US teThisOnline.comen-US (no hyphens).
