From Sebastian to Stuen-US -en-US art, gas prices are higher than they were at this en-US time last month and last year.en-US According to GasBuddy.com, which provides en-US crowd-sourced details on prices at over 135,000 en-US gas stations, gas prices have reached their highest en-US prices since at least 2015. Just in April, prices suren-US -en-US passed recent highs three times.en-US On April 12, GasBuddy reported a national en-US average of $2.68 per gallon for regular gas, which en-US it said was the highest since July 2015. By April en-US 23, the average had risen to $2.76. On April 29 it en-US had shot up to $2.808.en-US Gas price increases gripped 49 of the nations en-USWith gas prices rising, en-US some tips to save money en-USSebastian, en-US county en-US disagree en-US on fire en-US inspections en-USSEBASTIAN A battle is brewing en-US between the City of Sebastian and Indien-US-en-US an River County over the citys decision en-US to hire its own fire marshal.en-US On March 14, the Sebastian City en-US Council enacted an ordinance creating a en-US city fire marshals office. This would en-US result in Sebastian conducting its own en-US building inspections, rather than en-US remaining within the county system. en-US The action is similar to one taken by en-US Fellsmere several years ago out of frusen-US -en-US tration with the county inspection sysen-US -en-US tem.en-US The ordinance was not supported by en-US the Indian River County Board of Counen-US -en-US ty Commissioners, who want to mainen-US-en-US tain a unified system.en-US County Administrator Jason Brown en-US appeared at the council meeting and en-US asked the council to table the ordinance. en-US He said the fire district was unified, and en-US he felt it was important to hold all of the en-US services together.en-US The primary issue seemed to be the en-US timeliness of fire inspections. Local en-US structural engineer Todd Smith said that en-US the county had discussed streamlining en-US inspections six months earlier but had en-US yet to implement changes.en-US Mickey Capp of Capp Custom Builden-US-en-US ers complained that during a recent $1 en-US million renovation on a property, a jack en-US hammer set off the smoke detector and en-USSeeen-US en-US GASen-US, page 8en-US Seeen-US en-US INSPECTIONSen-US page 7en-USBy Mike Winikoffen-USmwinikoff@hometownnewsol.comen-USBy Mike Winikoffen-USmwinikoff@hometownnewsol.com On Saturday, April en-US28, the Vero Beach en-US Museum of Art had en-US a record breaking en-US crowd attend their en-US Children's Art en-US Festival. en-US 3 en-USVERO BEACH sDr. Keith J. Kalish has en-US been providing foot care in Indian River en-US County since 1987. The recent winner of en-US Hometown News Readers Choice Award en-US offers a well-rounded podiatric practice en-US with surgical and nonsurgical options and en-US can treat just about any foot or ankle proben-US-en-US lem that comes through the door.en-US People live with foot pain and dont realen-US -en-US ize that in many instances there are simple en-US solutions to taking care of their foot proben-US-en-US lems, Dr. Kalish told Hometown News. en-US Foot doctors see only about three percent en-US of the population that are having pain with en-US their feet. Most people arent aware that our en-US services are so effective.en-US Dr. Kalish treats almost any foot condien-US -en-US tion you can think of, including Achilles en-US tendon injuries, ankle instability and en-US sprains, problems from diabetes and arthrien-US-en-US tis, bunions, calluses, corns, flat feet, fungus en-US toenails, geriatric foot care, heel spurs, en-US ingrown toenails, warts, and plantar fascien-US-en-US itis.en-US Dr. Kalish also offers peripheral vascular en-US testing, digital X-rays, and 3D scanning en-US technology.en-US We see a lot of diabetics on a routine en-US schedule, Dr. Kalish said. Diabetes is a lifeen-US -en-US time condition, and if we can keep them en-US from having foot problems, thats much easen-US -en-US ier than taking care of a problem thats been en-US going on for a long time.en-US Diabetics often have problems with blood en-US flow and numbness in their feet. That can en-US lead to frequent en-US infections or ulceren-US -en-US ations. Many diaen-US-en-US betics get into the en-US dangerous mindset en-US of expecting foot en-US pain and seeing it en-US as normal, so they en-US dont treat it.en-US In some en-US instances it can en-US lead to problems en-US with bone infecen-US-en-US tion, and that sets en-US them up for losing a toe. If a diabetic loses a en-US toe, the chances of losing other toes or even en-US a foot or a leg go up significantly. So just by en-US seeing diabetics on a routine schedule, we en-US can do preventative maintenance and evaluen-US-en-US ate their circulation and nerve function. In en-US some instances we can put them in a special en-US diabetic shoe to protect their feet and preen-US -en-US vent problems from arising. If a diabetic en-US keeps their glucose well controlled and preen-US -en-US vents these problems from arising, they can en-US go a whole lifetime without having any en-US problems with their feet. Thats what were en-US trying to do, provide that preventative podien-US -en-US atric care to keep people out of trouble.en-US Some people come directly to Dr. Kalish en-US without a referral. Others are referred by en-US primary care physicians or endocrinoloen-US-en-US gists.en-US Dr. Kalish is a Board Certified Medical en-US and Surgical Foot Specialist with over 30 en-US years experience. Dr. Kalish is a member of en-US the American Podiatric Medical Associaen-US -en-US tion and Florida Podiatric Medical Associaen-US -en-US tion. He is affiliated with local hospitals en-US including the Indian River Medical Center. en-US Dr. Kalish has been a part-time supervising en-US faculty member for the Florida State Unien-US -en-US versity College of Medicine since 2008.en-US Most services can be performed in the en-US office on an out-patient setting.en-US Its been very gratifying over the years to en-US find there are a lot of small, simple proceen-US -en-US dures we can perform for people who may en-US have been going to a wound center or other en-US facility with a wound thats difficult to heal. en-US In some instances there are simple, straighten-US -en-US forward outpatient procedures we can do en-US that get rid of bone problems that had been en-US causing the wound, and then it can heal very en-US quickly. Some of our patients had been en-US going to a wound center or getting home en-US health care for weeks or months or even en-US years, and we can do a small procedure that en-US gets them healed in a very short period of en-US time in some instances. Those have been en-US especially gratifying procedures to do, if we en-US can get a wound to heal that has been there en-US for years. We like to focus on going after en-US what causes the problem in the first place.en-US Recently Dr. Kalish has been treating a lot en-US of patients with a synthetic cartilage implant en-US called Cartiva.en-US The Cartiva implant is like a jelly bean en-US that gets put inside the joint. If somebody en-US has pain when they move their big toe up en-US and down, its often from arthritis and bone en-US spurring around the joint. In the past, there en-US havent been the greatest treatments for that. en-US When I did my residency, we used a lot of en-US traditional implants, but they dont hold up en-US that well. Another alternative is just fusing en-US the joint, and that gets rid of the arthritic en-US pain but you have a stiff toe after that type of en-USprocedure.en-US The Cartiva implant is a small silien-US -en-US cone-type material thats put in the joint and en-US stays in place very nicely. Weve been getting en-US great results with it and we havent seen it en-US breaking down as can happen with other en-US implants. It really is a nice additional tool we en-US have for a difficult problem.en-US Some younger folks dont want to have a en-US stiff joint after surgery, and this is an alteren-US -en-US native that maintains the motion in the joint en-US but gets rid of the pain.en-US Another advantage to the Cartiva en-US implant is if down the road you need to fuse en-US a joint, you can still do it. In the past, with en-US implants you had to remove quite a bit of en-US bone, so that wasnt an option later because en-US there was too much bone loss. With this you en-US still maintain the option to have a fusion en-US down the road.en-US Most important, Dr. Kalish says, is to not en-US ignore problems.en-US You shouldnt have pain. Pain is usually a en-US warning sign that something needs to be en-US looked at and taken care of. If you have pain, en-US give us a call. We can usually fit people in en-US pretty quickly. Were very efficient.en-US Office hours are Monday through Friday, en-US 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Appointments can be en-US scheduled through the website or by phone.en-US The office of Dr. Keith J. Likewise, if a en-US woman self identifies as a man, she should en-US be allowed to use the mens restroom. Well, en-US if I self identify as a NASCAR driver, can I en-US drive 200 mph anywhere I want? If I self en-US identify as a cop, are the laws about imperen-US -en-US sonating a police office then void? It seems en-US to me that, what were once called deluen-US -en-US sions are now being passed off with a en-US straight face as self identification. Transen-US -en-US genders dont bother me. Transdead aka en-US zombies do.en-USSome adviceen-USA recent Can you help me plea asked on en-US how to deal with telephone solicitations. In en-US short why are you answering the phone? en-US The call back method is very effective. Callen-US-en-US er ID is helpful as it identifies friends, en-US important vendors/customers and relatives. en-US As for calls you dont recognize simply let en-US them go to voicemail. A phone with call en-US memory will allow recall of unknown numen-US -en-US bers. When I call back a solicitation usually en-US the following occurs: 1. the line is dead (no en-US answer); 2. the marketing company en-US announcement answers your call and asks if en-US you wish to be removed from their call list en-US (very handy); 3. a live person answers but en-US this is rare and they do not usually get call en-US backs and are off script. At my business we en-US keep a call log on a spreadsheet and this is a en-US great way to ID repeat solicitations (offenden-US -en-US ers). en-USMore help for robocallsen-USEveryone finds nuisance telephone calls en-US annoying. May I suggest checking out en-US NOMOROBO.comen-US (No More Robot Calls). en-US This is a free service for landlines and costs en-US $1.99/month for cell phones. It doesnt stop calls, but it is very en-US helpful.en-USFlorida should use nature for en-US pleasure and pocketbooken-USI moved from Chicago to sunny Florida en-US to enjoy the Sunshine State. After I moved en-US here, I started buying solar lights to illumien-US -en-US nate my yard. However, my electric bill was en-US atrocious. en-US Suddenly it occurred to me to get solar en-US panels to circumvent the high cost of elecen-US -en-US tricy. I contacted a solar company and I was en-US amazed to find out that Florida is not giving en-US any kind of rebates to homeowners to install en-US solar energy panels.en-US The Internal Revenue Service gives 30 percent rebates, however, the state of en-USFlorida does not. I wrote to Gov. Rick Scott en-US with no response.en-US I found out many other states offer incenen-US-en-US tives for homeowners to install solar panels. en-US I wonder why the Sunshine State is not en-US offering good incentives for homeowners.en-US Energy is a precious commodity and if en-US our state would incentives then we'd have en-US surplus energy that could easily be sold to en-US other states.en-US I cannot comprehend why Florida is not en-US doing anything to use nature for our pleaen-US-en-US sure and pocketbook.en-USDont worry, its not your faulten-USThroughout society we have seen a steady en-US progression in the thinking that nobody is en-US required to take responsibility for their en-US actions. Todays buzz word is termed milen-US -en-US lennial thinking. This includes not only the en-US freedom to do anything you wish without en-US being burdened by repercussions as well as en-US it no longer requires hard work to achieve. en-US You are, after all, entitled to everything en-US you want in life. en-US Take the case of a person that goes to a en-US bar and has far too much to drink. They get en-US into their car and drive in a severely en-US impaired state and kill someone. The real en-US culprit certainly cannot be the poor person en-US that now has to live with this on their conen-US -en-US science. It is, instead, the bartender that en-US served him too many drinks.. en-US We saw the McDonalds fiasco with the en-US coffee which the lady spilled on herself. I en-US believe the award she received was over $80 en-US million. McDonalds then had to insert a en-US notation on their coffee cups that the conen-US -en-US tents were hot since the public cannot be en-US expected to know this without fair warning. en-US Sounds right to me.en-US In recent months we have seen a couple of en-US cases much closer to home. We have had en-US two incidents where people were struck and en-US killed by a Brightline train. These were ceren-US -en-US tainly tragic events and I extend my condoen-US -en-US lences to the friends and families of the vicen-US-en-US tims. However, the initial gut reaction en-US disseminated by many was to go after en-US Brightline. The very thought that Brightline en-US is to blame for individuals knowingly standen-US -en-US ing on the tracks or walking/bicycling in en-US front of a train is a classic example of how en-US far weve gone to make certain the truth, en-US common sense or simply what is right is no en-US longer the reaction of our societal mores. If en-US the gates are down across an intersection, en-US the crossing alarms are operating and the en-US train is blowing its air horn, I see no way en-US how we can deflect blame onto the train. en-US One cannot legislate stupidity. To be fair, it en-US is possible that the victims may have had en-US mental or physical situations which preventen-US-en-US ed them from realizing what they were en-US doing. If so, then how does the family allow en-US a loved one with said conditions to have the en-US freedom to put themselves into such situaen-US -en-US tions? Again, an offshoot of personal en-US responsibility.en-US This penchant towards PC extends to law en-US enforcement as well. Sometimes those that en-US are really wearing the handcuffs are not the en-US perpetrators but our law enforcement memen-US-en-US bers themselves. en-USAnother splash of color On Saturday, April en-US28, the Vero Beach en-US Museum of Art had en-US a record breaking en-US crowd attend their en-US Children's Art en-US Festival. Throngs of en-US families enjoyed en-US art and interactive en-US activities set up in en-US every corner of the en-US museum.en-US Here, Kai Simen-US-en-US mons, age 3, pours en-US a cup of red paint en-US onto a large scale en-US sculptural guitar as en-US a part of a group en-US piece. en-US See more en-US photos, page 15.en-USPhoto courtesy of en-US Megan Hoots

en-US 8 en-USThe Humane Society of Vero Beach and en-US Indian River County (HSVB & IRC) invites en-US members of the community and their comen-US -en-US panion animals to the annual Blessing of the en-US Animals on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m. The en-US service will be held in the Humane Societys en-US Volunteer Pavilion located at 6230 77th en-US Street (Hobart Road), Vero Beach.en-US The Blessing of the Animals is being held en-US in conjunction with Be Kind to Animals en-US Week, a nationally recognized week celeen-US-en-US brating the human/animal bond and proen-US-en-US moting the protection of all animals. Officien-US -en-US ants include Alisa Forman of Temple Beth en-US Shalom, Deacon John Dunlop of St. Sebasen-US -en-US tian Church and Pastor Mark Bernthal from en-US Our Savior Lutheran Church.en-US This event invites people of all faiths and en-US all animals in attendance will be blessed. en-US Members of the community without pets en-US are also welcome to participate in the celeen-US-en-US bration. In addition, en-US government data highlighted a new record en-US for gasoline demand was breached last en-US week, and were not even into the summer en-US driving season yet. The road ahead at the en-US pump looks quite ominous if that demand en-US number proves common in the coming en-US weeks.en-US In Vero Beach, the lowest prices for reguen-US -en-US lar gas as of April 29 were $2.59 at The Beven-US -en-US erage Stop, 310 27th Ave. SW, $2.64 at en-US 7-Eleven, 210 Highland Dr. SW & 2089 Old en-US Dixie Hwy. The en-US lowest price reported in the state was $2.34 en-US at a Shell in Deerfield Beach. The highest en-US price in the state was $3.97 at a Chevron in en-US North Miami Beach.en-US Across the U.S., the average April 29 was en-US $2.808, compared to $2.658 one month ago en-US and $2.386 one year ago. The lowest average en-US prices in the U.S. are $2.491 in Oklahoma en-US and $2.496 in Louisiana. The highest averen-US -en-US age prices are $3.593 in California and en-US $3.564 in Hawaii.en-US GasBuddy says the sudden surge can be en-US blamed on oil prices rising to nearly $67 per en-US barrel, the highest level since 2014, on fears en-US of military action in Syria and trade conflict en-US with China. U.S. oil inventories also stand en-US 20 percent lower than a year ago, the result en-US of higher crude oil exports and OPECs en-US agreement to cut oil production, now in its en-US 15th month.en-US Fuel Saving Tipsen-US 1. Avoid high speeds. Increasing speed en-US increases aerodynamic drag exponentially, en-US dramatically increasing fuel consumption.en-US 2. Avoid frequent accelerations and hard en-US breaking. Simply trying to maintain a conen-US -en-US sistent flow can increase fuel economy by 20 en-US percent.en-US 3. Keep tires properly inflated. One tire en-US underinflated by two PSI can increase fuel en-US consumption by one percent. Pay attention en-US to manufacturer recommendations for air en-US pressure and check them regularly.en-US 4. Use air conditioning as little as practien-US -en-US cal. en-US The air conditioner can increase fuel conen-US -en-US sumption by 20 percent.en-US 5. Keep windows closed, but choose open en-US windows over A/C when you need one or en-US the other. Open windows at highway speeds en-US can increase fuel consumption by 10 peren-US -en-US cent. Thats 50 percent better than A/C, but en-US still a loss.en-US 6. Service vehicle regularly. Fuel efficienen-US-en-US cy gets worse if you have dirty air filters, old en-US spark plugs or low fluid levels.en-US 7. Use cruise control to maintain a conen-US -en-US stant speed. But avoid the temptation to en-US move your legs away from the peddles or en-US divert your gaze from the road, as you must en-US remain prepared to respond to any situaen-US -en-US tion.en-US 8. Avoid heavy loads. Those bags of kitty en-US litter or top soil or extra cases of water in the en-US trunk will cost you more in fuel than you en-US saved by buying them in bulk. Empty heavy en-US items from your car as soon as you can.en-US 9. Avoid long idles. Its often hard to anticen-US-en-US ipate how long youll be waiting for someen-US-en-US one outside a school or store, but the general en-US rule is that if you will be stopped in place for en-US more than one minute, youll save gas by en-US turning the car off and then restarting it.en-US 10. Purchase a fuel efficient vehicle. Peoen-US -en-US ple buy more vehicles when gas prices are en-US low, and then they ignore fuel and go for a en-US big truck or SUV. Think ahead and chose en-US the smallest vehicle that will suit your needs, en-US with the best rated fuel efficiency you can en-US afford. Choosing a manual transmission will en-US often save you extra money, though thats en-US not for everyone.en-USGasen-USFrom page 1

The organization purchased the en-US club more than two decades ago when it en-US opened the PGA Village just on the other en-US side of I-95.en-US When it first opened in the late 1980s the en-US course was the jewel of St. Lucie County. en-US Over the years it has gone through every en-US step of being cared for from neglect to en-US pampering. One thing the course never lost en-US was its variety. The course remains a lot of en-US fun to play with a solid mix of holes that en-US challenge you to hit every club in your bag.en-US The new owner is CGI St. Lucie, the en-US same group that owns The Evergreen Club en-US in Palm City. Having played Evergreen and en-US witnessed the great conditions that course en-US is always in, I am quite excited for St. Lucie en-US Trail. Apparently the community is as well, en-US with over 100 new members joining just in en-US the few weeks since the course sold.en-US Were excited to be here, said General en-US Manager, Matt Boyd. We love the layout en-US and the design. We will do everything we en-US can to promote golf here.en-US The new owners plan to address some of en-US the drainage issues the course experiences en-US when those summer thunderstorms move en-US through. They are also listening to the comen-US -en-US munity to see what the members and en-US customers want.en-US If the course was paid a little more en-US attention (by the previous owner), everyone en-US would have been thrilled, said Boyd. We en-US are giving it that attention.en-US A benefit of purchasing the course at this en-US time of year is that business tends to be a en-US little slow. This gives the new owners a en-US chance to address the issues and get the en-US course primed and ready for season.en-US One thing the membership was missing en-US was the country club atmosphere. The club en-US has a beautiful clubhouse that wasnt being en-US used to its potential. The dining room saw en-US over 200 people show up for a dinner shorten-US -en-US ly after the purchase. The pool and tennis en-US courts were also included in the purchase en-US and the green clay courts may be the en-US best-kept secret in the area. en-US However, CGI purchased the en-US club because it loves the golf en-US course.en-US The course has five sets of en-US tees and plays anywhere from en-US just over 5,000 yards long to en-US just over 6,900. The par-4 en-US third hole, at 458 yards from en-US the tips, may just be the en-US longest par-4 in the area. en-US In the 2013 the PGA of America en-US renovated the club. Dick Gray was brought en-US in to focus on getting the course up to its en-US tough standards. The focus was on the en-US playable areas. Getting the course cleaned en-US up and looking good from tee to green was en-US first and foremost. It took a while, but the en-US greens were rebuilt and re-grassed. With a en-US few years of growth in them now, they are en-US about perfect.en-US One recent trend in course renovation is en-US where the areas around the perimeter of the en-US holes are cleaned up and thinned out. Not en-US having thick clumps of palmettos to gobble en-US up slightly errant shots serves a trio of en-US purposes. First, it speeds up play and, en-US second, it makes for a less frustrating round en-US for the average golfer. Thirdly, it creates en-US more airflow across the fairways and greens en-US and allows the course to breathe.en-US If you played here years ago, you will en-US surely remember the palmettos that en-US gobbled up almost every wayward shot. en-US Most of these are gone or well-trimmed. en-US Fairways are wider, and the greens a bit en-US larger. The tall grasses in the wetlands have en-US been cut to a proper height. en-US Now to see what other improvements en-US CGI makes over the coming months. I have en-US a feeling this club is back and ready to en-US re-take its place as a jewel on the Treasure en-US Coast.en-US For information on the club, memberships en-US and tee times, visit en-US www.stlucietrail.com en-US or en-US call the pro shop at (772) 340-1444.en-US Contact James Stammer aten-US stammergolf@en-US yahoo.com.
