en-US 3 en-USVERO BEACH National Women Build en-US Week is an annual event sponsored by Habien-US-en-US tat for Humanity. The goal is to engage en-US women in building Habitat homes and en-US learning skills they can put to use for the en-US rest of their lives. The event is normally held en-US the week before Mothers Day.en-US On Saturday, May 5, Indian River County en-US volunteers will work on home construction en-US at Habitats Waterside Community near en-US Oslo Road in Vero Beach. Anyone who en-US wants to learn how to build is invited to paren-US -en-US ticipate, and you can come alone or bring en-US family and friends. No experience is necesen-US -en-US sary, as jobsite supervisors will provide en-US instruction.en-US Habitat estimates that more than 18,000 en-US women will volunteer nationwide this year en-US with about 300 Habitat affiliates.en-US The Women Build concept was born in en-US 1991, when a group of women in Charlotte, en-US N.C. completed the first women-built Habien-US -en-US tat for Humanity house.en-US In 1997, as part of the Jimmy and Rosaen-US -en-US lynn Carter Work Project, U.S. First Lady en-US Hillary Clinton, Kentucky First Lady Libby en-US Jones, and Oklahoma First Lady Cathy en-US Keating participated in Women Build, and en-US Habitats First Ladies Build was born.en-US From 1999, women governors and en-US first ladies from all 50 states joined Habitat en-US to build houses with families in need.en-US National Women Build Week came en-US together in 2008 when Habitat partnered en-US with Lowes. Since then, 117,000 women en-US construction volunteers have helped build en-US or repair homes for 5,000 families. This year, en-US Lowes donated nearly $2 million to support en-US the event. Since the partnership began, en-US Lowes has donated more than $63 million en-US to Habitat.en-US Were excited to partner with Lowes to en-US educate, inspire and empower women to en-US advocate and help Habitat homeowners love en-US where they live through building or improven-US -en-US ing an affordable place they can call home, en-US said outgoing Indian River Habitat presien-US -en-US dent Andy Bowler. Mr. Bowler, who is retiren-US -en-US ing, will be completing his final Women en-US Build project as the organizations leader. en-US We want to engage women of all skill en-US levels to join their friends, families and en-US neighbors to build up their communities en-US and volunteer, where women will gain en-US invaluable skills to bring back and use in en-US their everyday life.en-US Despite the name of the event, men are en-US welcome to participate. The focus is women en-US because Habitat neighborhoods are often en-US comprised of mostly women and children, en-US who are also the population most likely to en-US experience poor living conditions. The en-US event is meant to spotlight homeownership en-US challenges faced by women.en-US The Women Build events seek to encouren-US -en-US age women to become more involved in en-US building and maintaining their communien-US-en-US ties, and to learn the skills to build and fix en-US things without relying on men.en-US Volunteers should bring closed-toed en-US shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable en-US clothes. en-US Habitat will provide tools, water, snacks, en-US and a souvenir Women Build t-shirt.en-US Plan to arrive at 7 a.m. to sign in and regen-US -en-US ister. Welcome comments and build site en-US activity begin at 7:30 a.m. en-US Habitats Waterside Community is located en-US at 2125 Waterside Lane SW, Vero Beach. en-US From U.S. Hwy 1 and Oslo Road, go 1.7 en-US miles west to 20th Ave. SW. I thank the EmployU organization en-US for having the caring and the heart to help en-US folks with disabilities find employment. en-US Publix helps where they can and should be en-US commended. The state of Florida has got to en-US be one of the worst states in regard to comen-US-en-US panies making the attempt to employ the en-US disabled. Ironically, even Government funden-US -en-US ed agencies like veterans clinics shake off en-US disabled employees. Bad for the profit line I en-US guess. Florida is a Right to Work state and en-US unfortunately with it comes the right to fire, en-US cause or no cause. Kudos to the people of en-US EmployU and their participating businesses en-US like Publix and others.en-USProper perspectiveen-USWalking along the shoreline one recent en-US sunny morning, I noticed out of nowhere a en-US flock of pelicans flying toward me.en-US From every which way, all 48 of them en-US formed a single file line. They swooped en-US down just above arm's length while gliding en-US silently over my head, and then quickly curen-US -en-US ley-cued around and about as they flew out en-US of sight over the horizon.en-US Striking me as a serene way to get from en-US one place to another, I thought how oppoen-US -en-US site the agitated approach of humans to the en-US annoying inconveniences of highway conen-US -en-US gestion. Rather than aggravated to the point en-US of road rage by way of standstill traffic, how en-US much better to follow the laid back live-and-en-US let-live example of no nonsense pelicans.en-US Cooperating with one another despite the en-US awkwardness of heavy nine-foot wing spans, en-US long yellow pointed beaks and large throat en-US pouches, they travel in friendly flocks stopen-US-en-US ping only long enough to fish and/or painsen-US -en-US takingly give birth to and tend to their en-US beloved offspring. Jeopardized constantly by en-US poisons, pollutants, and parasites, they en-US patiently cope with all that they must in en-US order to make the very most of the beachside en-US they possibly can.en-USJust say no, thanksen-USIt's easy and to the point! Many grocery en-US stores have times when the cashiers ask for en-US donations for different causes. So many en-US times I hear a customer say "I gave yesteren-US -en-US day" (when it just started that day), "I gave at en-US a different store," "I give back home" (snowen-US -en-US birds) and "I only give to 'so and so cause.'" I en-US have heard a few say "I'm good."en-US Who cares about the reason? I myself just en-US say no thanks and leave it at that. By the way, en-US I actually sleep quite fine.en-USDon't record meen-USFPL needs to have real people on the en-US phones.en-USKeep your hand on your purseen-USI see so many with their backs turned, en-US looking at something and their purse behind en-US them in the cart.en-US I like to think I'm quite aware of my suren-US -en-US roundings. Spread out.en-US If you have children, try to move to a en-US more secluded spot or nearer to the water. en-US Not everyone loves your children screaming en-US or wants sand kicked up.en-US If you have a tent or umbrella, be mindful en-US of other peoples' view. They were there first. en-US Dont block their view of the ocean.en-US Dont sit directly in front of another party. en-US Try to find an angle so they still have a view en-US of the ocean.en-US If you arrive later, walk a little farther en-US down to the so others can enjoy it also.en-US We have many miles of beach. I en-US subscribe to to the US FDA Safety Alert sysen-US -en-US tem and have seen numerous alerts related en-US to spices such as pepper and turmeric, for en-US bacterial contamination.en-US Ginger, when sold in California, has to en-US carry a Proposition 65 warning because it en-US contains high levels of lead.en-US Whether these toxins in natural herbs en-US and spices, effect the long term health of the en-US writer, will depend on the condition of that en-US person's immune system. en-US 7 en-UStures be kept and reused at a different locaen-US -en-US tion, such as the Veterans Memorial. Mr. en-US Griffin agreed and said staff were already en-US discussing locations.en-US The agreement provides for a 15-year en-US operating term, an estimated $800 rent per en-US year paid by FPL to the city, and insurance en-US and indemnification protections for the city.en-US The agreement is made under FPLs Solaren-US -en-US Now program, which FPL describes as an en-US easy way to bring clean solar energy to your en-US communities.en-US FPL Senior Product Development Manen-US-en-US ager Anuj Chokshi outlined the program.en-US Our SolarNow program allows customen-US-en-US ers to voluntarily contribute $9 a month to en-US support solar projects in the community, en-US Mr. Chokshi said. We utilize those contrien-US-en-US butions to build solar projects within the en-US service territory at no cost to our hosts. In en-US Sebastian, we have over 100 residents curen-US -en-US rently participating in the program. FPL en-US customers may volunteer to support the en-US program by paying the $9 fee on their en-US monthly bill. Customers may also choose en-US not to participate.en-US The Solar Canopy to be used looks much en-US like the canopies often placed in parking en-US areas to shade parking spots while remainen-US -en-US ing open on the sides. Rather than covering en-US with solid material, the Solar Canopy uses en-US solar panels to capture sunlight and generen-US -en-US ate electricity that is fed into the local grid.en-US Signs will be placed by the structure to en-US explain the solar energy process and beneen-US -en-US fits.en-US The lease specifies a construction term of en-US six months. FPL will pay the city rental fees en-US on or before July 15 of each year. All equipen-US -en-US ment that makes up the canopy remains the en-US property of FPL.en-US I think this is awesome, Mayor Jim Hill en-US said. I look forward to the continued relaen-US-en-US tionship the city of Sebastian has had with en-US the solar program.en-US Mayor Hill asked how tall the structure en-US would be. Mr. Chokshi said it would be en-US about 12-14 feet, and mindful of the water en-US features underneath. Mr. Griffin added that en-US the existing shade structures are a little bit en-US lower, about 10-12 feet.en-US Mr. Chokshi said the height was flexible en-US and could be tailored to what the Council en-US wanted, either matching the existing height, en-US or a bit higher or lower.en-US In response to Council Member Albert en-US Iovinos question about the size of the panen-US -en-US els, Mr. Chokshi said each panel is 280 watts, en-US and the size of each panel is 18.6 square feet. en-US Mr. Iovino said his concern was that damen-US-en-US aged panels could be easily removed and en-US replaced, and Mr. Chokshi said they could en-US with very little turnaround time.en-US Nobody from the public spoke for or en-US against the proposal, and the council en-US approved the motion to start construction en-US unanimously and enthusiastically, 5-0.en-US Under its SolarNow program, FPL has en-US been installing such structures across the en-US state, in a variety of designs and configuraen-US -en-US tions. en-US 8 en-USVERO BEACH When one gets a en-US chance to ride into history, its not expecten-US-en-US ed that history is sitting directly beneath en-US you. But that was the situation last week en-US when the GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team en-US offered a ride around Indian River County en-US and Vero Beach before the annual air show en-US April 21 and 22.en-US In this case, it was aboard an SNJ sinen-US -en-US gle-prop training aircraft and three pilots en-US ran formations some of which were en-US wingtip-to-wingtip and it was the thrill of en-US a lifetime. en-US You usually dont get a chance to fly close en-US formations military people are typically en-US the only ones who get to do it but were en-US going to take you guys up in a close formaen-US -en-US tion and its going to be fairly low, said en-US BBIG Marketing Supervisor Brenda Little en-US before the flight, which only caused the en-US excitement and expectation to build.en-US The plan was called The Pilot Maker en-US during its heyday because it was built by the en-US thousands during 1940 and 1941. It was the en-US main trainer plane used by new US Navy en-US pilots and has an amazingly sturdy airframe en-US and platform that provided speed as en-US much as 165 miles per hour security and en-US nostalgia all at one time.en-US According to the website, North Amerien-US -en-US can Aviation designed the SNJ as a transien-US -en-US tion trainer between basic trainers and first-en-US line tactical aircraft. These planes served as en-US the classroom for most of the Allied pilots en-US flying in WWII. This aircraft has been recen-US -en-US ognized by many names: the T-6 Texan en-US (Army Air Corps) and the Harvard (Royal en-US Air Force). While made famous as a trainer, en-US the SNJ won honors in WWII and in the en-US early portion of the Korean War. A total of en-US 15,495 planes were manufactured training en-US thousands of pilots across 34 different counen-US-en-US tries.en-US With the canopy open, it was easy to stick en-US ones head out the window and enjoy the en-US Treasure Coast from about 1,500 feet, and en-US the crystal-clear Atlantic waters have never en-US been a prettier color of blue/green. Also, the en-US pilots Jim Record, Ken Johansen and en-US Steve Salmirs were informational and en-US friendly during the ride, which lasted an en-US amazing 30 minutes or so. Interestingly en-US enough, the post-flight period almost en-US required a rest, because riding in the aircraft en-US was a workout in and of itself.en-US Ive been with the team for over a decade, en-US and Im the executive officer of the team en-US callsign Ragnar and my father used to en-US fly in the number-four position on this en-US team, Mr. Johansen said. "I had some time en-US to myself, and he suggested that I get my en-US tail-wheel endorsement and I came out to en-US ground school and started flying and here I en-US am. One of the best parts of this team is en-US being a part of history and flying with a en-US group of uber-professional pilots and being en-US able to bring these World War II airplanes to en-US different venues and show them off.en-US The Skytypers team is top-flight, with six en-US pilots and four full-time mechanics and a en-US 54-foot hauler to house all the necessary en-US equipment and parts. It is the longest conen-US -en-US tinuously operating team in the air right en-US now, and the experienced pilots come from en-US the US military and other arenas.en-US This is what we do, said Mr. Record, en-US who has been with the team since 1992. But en-US opportunities like this are going by the wayen-US -en-US side because its so cost-prohibitive to keep en-US these planes in the air. Any airplane takes a en-US lot of maintenance, but flying these airen-US -en-US planes you can get parts and engines for en-US them but getting trained mechanics is a en-US challenge and we have the best.en-US The team also is a close-knit group that en-US knows when to cut loose.en-US Im an Air Force veteran, and we had the en-US same squadron camaraderie and everybody en-US was there for the same purpose, said Mr. en-US Salmirs, who has been with the team since en-US 1996. We riled on each other and were en-US there to have fun, and its the same for these en-US guys here. We come from different backen-US -en-US grounds, but were all here for the same puren-US -en-US pose: Fly safely and take these planes to the en-US limits of their envelope, and were even en-US starting to do a little aerobatics that were en-US introducing into the routine. we areNOW HIRING GRAPHIC DESIGNER GRAPHIC DESIGNER GRAPHIC DESIGNER Requirements!Working knowledge of basic newspaper prepress & full color printing process Deadline Pressure and shifting priorities In-House Full Time Position 4 days (30-36 hours a week) PsPlease email your resume to opportunity@hometownnewsol.comEOE / We Drug Test COMMUNITY lamplighterhomesfl.com321-254-0303 Lamplighter Village 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S AN AGE QUALIFIEDEasy financing available!500 Lamplighter Blvd. Melbourne, FL 32934 Heated Pool and Spa Fitness 8 Pickle Ball Courts 8 Bocce Ball Courts Key West 18 Hole Mini Golf 8 Shueboard Courts Pool Side BarLamplighter Village is Floridas premier Active Adult Community. Poseys grade of 88 percent was conen-US -en-US sidered slightly more conservative than Sen. en-US Marco Rubio, who received a grade of 84 en-US percent. All of Floridas Democratic memen-US -en-US bers received grades under 10 percent and en-US were declared by ACUF to be a Coalition of en-US the Radical Left.en-US This is the 47th year that the ACUF has en-US ranked members of Congress based on their en-US commitment to conservative principles.en-US According to Congress.gov, which tracks en-US legislation introduced by all Congressperen-US -en-US sons, Rep. Poseys most recently introduced en-US bill is H.R.5518, to amend the Public Health en-US Service Act to establish a preference, in the en-US allocation of donated organs, for individuals en-US who are lawfully present in the United en-US States. en-USVERO BEACH Hidden inside the Shell en-US Gas Station on the corner of Oslo Road and en-US 27th Avenue is one of Vero Beachs best kept en-US secrets. Veros Heros Country Kitchen has en-US been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner en-US for nearly 15 years, with a full menu that en-US most wouldnt imagine would be served en-US from inside a gas station.en-US I visited the establishment during a weeken-US-en-US day lunchtime. The line for freshly made en-US subs, burgers and sandwiches was long but en-US moved quickly. In the professional kitchen, en-US chefs work together as a team to produce en-US great meals. Let me enlighten you on the en-US real problem and where it originated. en-US It is in my home kitchen and I am sure en-US my home is not the only one where this en-US problem exits. It has nothing to do with en-US cooking soups or anything. It has to do with en-US the kitchen organizational set up. Thats en-US right, who decides how the kitchen is set up en-US is the problem. en-US In my home, too many cooks is fine en-US except they reorganize the kitchen every en-US day. Two weeks ago my wife decided to en-US reorganize the kitchen to help me. She went en-US out and bought open shelving so you could en-US see everything stored just by looking en-US around. She organized all the cooking pots en-US and pans under the open work tables. It was en-US a spectacular job. People visiting come into en-US the kitchen and comment how great the en-US setup is. en-US I agree. I really love what she did. The en-US only problem is she organized it and knows en-US where everything is, I dont. A location en-US chart would have been nice. Each day I find en-US new surprises where things are stored. en-US All kidding aside, I am so fortunate she en-US redid the kitchen and her main purpose was en-US to make it easier for me to cook in, not to en-US change wall paper or hang knick-knacks on en-US the wall. It was designed to be functional en-US and a place to create great meals. en-US Wait a minute! Sometimes I forget just en-US how smart my wife really is. Thats OK, I en-US love cooking for her and once I find en-US everything it should be easier.en-USFETA CHEESE MOUSSE en-US12 servingsen-US Ingredientsen-US 4 ounces heavy creamen-US 6 ounces feta cheeseen-US 2 ounces olive oilen-US 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juiceen-US 2 teaspoons sundried tomatoes in en-US olive oilen-US Salt and pepper to tasteen-US Directionsen-US Place all ingredients in the blender.
