Advanced Workshops Update

As many of you know, the Florida Master Naturalist Program (FMNP) will be adding
advanced training workshops in 2009. There are four topic areas, each of which includes
three 1-day workshops. The topic areas are Conservation Science, Habitat Evaluation,
Wildlife Monitoring and Environmental Interpretation. These workshops will provide more
in-depth information on subject areas such as Conservation Science and Environmental
Interpretation and train students in techniques used by citizen scientists in Wildlife
Monitoring and Habitat Evaluation. Each topic area will have presentations, class
discussions and either a planned activity or field trip to practice techniques or review
concepts learned in the workshop.

We'll be introducing these workshops to our knowledgeable network of FMNP Instructors
during April-May, and workshops should start becoming available by Fall 2009. Tuition will
be $225 per topic (3 workshops per topic) for FMNP graduates (anyone who has completed
at least one FMNP module) or $300 for non-FMNP graduates. Upon completion of a topic
area, students will receive a certificate of completion and be entered into an on-line
database on our website for Master Naturalist Advanced Training.

For more information on the advanced workshops and all course offerings, visit our
website at www.MasterNaturalist.org and click on Course Offerings. We look forward to
providing these new workshops and are confident you will find them valuable.
Best regards,

2008 FMNP Report

We had another very successful year for the FMNP in 2008! We had the second-highest
year for certificates issued (755) since the program began in 2001. In addition, we had an
amazing 144 students complete all three modules to become members in the honor roll of
Master Naturalists! Our annual graduate survey revealed that in 2008, 69% of respondents
were motivated to become volunteers after taking FMNP classes and that 45% of current
volunteers increased their volunteer efforts after taking an FMNP course. In addition, 67%
of survey participants indicated they used FMNP information to develop educational
programs and materials that were used in volunteer or paid positions.

Also in 2008, we added several new instructor training teams throughout the state to offer
you more locations for FMNP classes. We now have classes being offered in the Florida
Keys (Monroe County), the Gainesville area (Alachua County), Bradenton (Manatee
County), Big Cypress National Preserve (Collier County), and southern Orlando (Orange
County). We also updated many of our other existing teams to bring you the best
instructors and materials possible! Look for more additions to our training locations in
2009, including the Miami-Dade and Tallahassee areas.

Happy New Year!
