Program Launches New
Coastal Systems Module

With the first ecosystem module in our series of 3
(Wetlands, Coastal, Uplands) well underway (386
Wetlands Graduates, 95 Instructors), we are pleased
to announce the release of the second module:
Coastal Systems. Instructor workshops are being
offered this fall, with student classes beginning in
The first Coastal Instructor training workshop
was conducted September 26-27 at the Florida Keys
Marine Laboratory in Long Key. The attendance was
phenomenal, with 30 Instructors. The Coastal
module follows the same design as the Wetlands
module, but with some new improvements we think
Instructors and Students will appreciate. From the
response of Instructors at the conclusion of our
recent 2-day workshop, the first group of Coastal
Instructors agreed.
The biggest change is in format and content of the
Student and Instructor Workbooks. Student
Workbooks now include all slides plus lecture notes,
in addition to supplementary articles. The Student
Workbooks represent a tremendous resource that
totals nearly 1,200 pages.
The emphasis of the coastal module will be coastal
ecology, marine and estuarine habitats, coastal
upland habitats, and coastal wildlife, plus new
presentations on interpretation and environmental
We are continuing to expand both the Wetlands
and Coastal modules across the state of Florida.
Thanks to all of you for making the Florida Master
Naturalist Program a huge success!

FMNP Instructor Workshops are required for all new instructors and existing, certified instructors who want to teach
a new module. There is no fee for attending Instructor Workshops, but prospective instructors must submit an
instructor application (available on the FMNP web site) and receive approval to attend. Instructor workshops are 2
days long with an optional field trip on the second day. More information about Instructor benefits, qualifications,

West Indies, and South America
Habitat: Hammock edges, open sunny areas

The Gulf Fritillary is a member of the Brushfoot butterfly family (Nyniplialidac), so named because they have reduced
front legs covered with a "brush" of long scales. Don't be fooled: they may appear to have only four legs, but they are true
insects with six. The Gulf Fritillary is in a subfamily (Heliconiinae) with Variegated Fritillaries (Euptoieta claudia) and
longwings, but is the only species in the genus Agraulis.
Oftentimes, the Gulf Fritillary is seen flying over the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico--hence the name. October is a
peak month for sighting this butterfly throughout the state, so keep a wild eye out!

Interpretive Tracks g- W 4a c

Interpretation is an art which, if performed properly, will
spark appreciation for the natural environment. That is not
to say you have to give your audience a song and dance, but it
does require the mastery of three simple tools: 1) Know your
material well, and make sure it is current and accurate; 2)
Present this information in an articulate way; 3) Appreciate
different learning styles of your audience. The first two tools
require preparation, but the third is often difficult to master.
Many interpreters don't always know who will attend their
programs, so audience assessment may be difficult.

However, learning styles play a key role in how people 1
absorb information. The three general learning styles are i
auditory, visual, and tactile. If you are speaking to someone
who is a tactile learner, presenting materials they can touch
optimizes their learning experience--e.g. touching the back of
a rusty lyonia leaf to feel the protective hairs. For your next
tour, try to incorporate activities for people of all learning
styles--visual props, smelling a leaf, drawing a tree, etc.
Presenting information in different ways will help to make
you a more effective interpreter and increase learning across

*Not a true grass, this common wetland plant group is eaten
by many species of wildlife.

Responsible Interactions with Wildlife

Since I became aware of how fragile some of Florida's
wildlife and its unique habitat are, I have been concerned
about how best to protect them. I have observed how easy
it is to disturb certain wildlife species or to damage their
habitat without even realizing that we may be degrading
their ability to feed and reproduce. My major concern has
been to discover a helpful way to get the message across as
well as how to get it to the widest audience of residents
and visitors.
I welcomed the opportunity to contribute to the ethics
presentation of the new Coastal Module of the Florida
Master Naturalist Program. Having graduated from the
first module offered, Freshwater Wetland Systems of
Florida, I see the Florida Master Naturalist Program as a
great opportunity to reach a wide audience. It is also an
excellent opportunity to provide a helpful message of how
best to observe wildlife and to enjoy wildlife habitats
while sustaining both.
I anticipate that the information developed for the ethics
section will be useful reference material for the
development of criteria and standards for members of the
Society for Ethical Ecotourism in Southwest Florida and
look forward to continued involvement with the Florida
Master Naturalist Program.
