JUST SUPPOSE TELLS US WE CAN ENTER
AS WE WISH AND COME OUT WHEN WE
ARE READY. EACH PRINT DRAWS US IN,
TO STAY AND EXPERIENCE.

Maggie and Jerry have created a natural paradise
in Gainesville, a garden-like compound on a
marshy pond. This warm, inviting, eclectic
setting houses Jerry's darkroom, their studios
and extensive collection of folk art and
memorabilia that sometimes appear in their art.
They travel extensively-to lecture at major
exhibitions of their work, including shows in
both China and Korea this year alone, or to
research and to collect images-but Gainesville
is where their art is formed.

Devoted to the University, these always
innovative artists are willing to share with the
Gainesville community the first results of some
recent technical experimentation. Uelsmann,
a pioneer in layering black-and-white negatives
using traditional darkroom equipment,
has worked with a cutting-edge digital printer
for the first time. Taylor, already completely
involved with scanners, digital media and even
animation of her still imagery, has printed in a
larger scale that is new for her.

Sharing space, technological inquiry and
aesthetic direction-both artists' works are
ubiquitously described as dreamlike
and ethereal-exhibiting their work together
offers viewers a chance to compare and contrast
the artists' thought processes. These images
invite the audience to contemplation.

z

The figure in Maggie's Woman in a Stone Skirt
has no head, but a dog is looking at the
space above her neck and tie with such
intensity that it doesn't matter. She could
be anybody and the passion between her and
H the dog is right there. She holds a blue cup
M j> parallel to the dog's mouth and the dog has
" ^ a blue plate, as empty as her neck.

< Yet nothing is missing here. The stone skirt
O and the house are stable and solid and built;
? the sky is pink and comforting and functions
also as a leaf from an antique book, scratched
and worn. But, do Maggie's carefully
composed elements create an orderly
balanced dream or, is there something
disturbing or disquieting implied?

Questions also appear in Jerry's work.
The huge eye in the center foreground of his
Home ia a Memory creates an ambiguous
portal for an extended vista leading down a
great lawn to a sweet little white house... Or,
is the house ominous and haunted? Ablack
crow possibly warns of some kind of danger,
but the lawn stretching behind could be
reassuring in its symmetry. Exactly what is
the memory of this home?

The eyeball at the foot of the hill is
quintessential Uelsmann. Is it good or
is it evil? Is it welcoming or threatening?
Does it see us? Is it us? Is it the artist?
By separating a body part and embed-
ding it in a landscape, the artist grants
us freedom to deliberate.

JUST SUPPOSE... YOU WERE THERE.

amy vigilante, PhD
director, university galleries
curator for the exhibition

Just Suppose presents selected works created
since 2000 by Maggie Taylor and Jerry Uelsmann,
two internationally renowned photographers who
have made Gainesville their home. Uelsmann is
an acclaimed University of Florida Professor
Emeritus of Photography; Taylor holds an MFA
from UF's School of Art + Art History. Sometimes
unsettling, often humorous, each artist's
imagery poses problems to solve and strange
juxtapositions to resolve.
