Spring 2009 IACUC Inspections
begin April 1st
The IACUC will begin semiannual inspections
of all animal facilities on April 1. Inspections will
be conducted Monday-Thursday 9am-12noon
& 1:30pm-4:30pm, and Friday 1:30pm-4:30pm.
Inspections will not be done on Friday
mornings or during IACUC meeting days (1st &
3rd Tuesday of the month). The PI must make
themselves and/or a senior lab member
available.

What will the IACUC look for during
inspections? Here are some areas of
concern...

Appropriate drug storage, control, and
expiration date monitoring
Drug/controlled substances log

Expired supplies are separated, marked,
and/or disposed of properly
Use of USP grade drugs or approved
justification to use non-USP
General cleanliness and condition of
room
Annual calibration of anesthesia
machines
Approved protocols available in all labs;
both paper copy and electronic version
are acceptable
Separate surgery areas for prep,
procedure, and recovery
Methods for re-sterilization of
instruments between serial surgeries
Approved euthanasia technique used
properly

Staff knowledgeable of protocol
For housing areas, maintenance of
SOPs and logs recording animal care,
room cleaning, and environmental
conditions
IACUC approval letters displayed on
doors if animals are housed in facilities
other than ACS
For a detailed list of what the IACUC will be
looking for on inspections, please see:

New AALAS Training Modules
Available

The AALAS Learning Library now has several
new training modules available to UF staff.
Introduction to Ferrets and Working with
Laboratory Zebrafish will now be required
training for individuals working with these
species. The Refresher Course: Working
with the IACUC can now be used for retraining
of staff for their three-year training renewal.
This course highlights the sections of the
protocol which the IACUC will focus on during
a renewal review. In this refresher course,
many of the essential points from "Working
with the IACUC" are summarized without the
extensive details of the full version.
The Common Compliance Issues course
describes 9 common compliance mistakes and
suggestions for prevention. Lab members are
encouraged to take this course for
informational purposes.
All these courses can be found at
http://www.aalaslearninqlibrary.or/q under UF
Researchers IACUC Training Modules.
