The Kirby Smith School
Kirby Smith School was built in 1900 and is one of the oldest existing school buildings in Alachua County. Originally, it was called the Gainesville Graded & High School and was available to all white children. In 1912, an extension was added to accommodate the higher grades. In 1922, it reverted to a primary and grammar grade school and took on the name of Eastside Elementary School. In 1939, it went through another transformation and new wings were added and the auditorium was extended. It was then renamed after General Edmund Kirby Smith, the last survivor of the full generals of the Confederacy. Today it houses the offices of the Alachua County School Board. http://heritage.ac1d.1ib.fl.us/1201-1250/1247.html
