PROGRAM NARRATIVE STATEMENT

Marin-Hassett Exhibits

As part of its outdoor historical museum, San Agustin Antiguo,
the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board has for many years used
the Marin-Hassett house on St. George Street, just north of Hypolita
St., as a setting for museum exhibits. The present exhibits, installed
a number of years ago, leave much to be desired interpretively and have
been the target of professional criticism. The purpose of this grant
is to create new exhibits that will greatly surpass the current ones
in professional quality and interpretive effectiveness.

The objective is to use the Board's present artifact collection to
inform the visiting public about the importance of religion in late 17th
and 18th-century Florida, a subject which will be broadened to include
the impact of the Spanish mission system on the culture of the Florida
aborigines. This objective falls clearly within the Bicentennial theme
of Heritage.

None of the Board's present exhibits adequately treats the related
themes of the Indians, the missions, and religion, yet these topics are
vital to an understanding of the history of Florida. The new exhibits
will thus fill a major gap in the Board's interpretive program.

To accomplish its objective, the Board plans to use up-to-date,
professionally accepted exhibit techniques, including the provision of
adequate lighting and environmental controls. The exhibits will consist
of art objects, artifacts, descriptive labels, texts, and graphics.

The funds requested will enable the Board to improve and expand
its interpretive program to the educational benefit of 125,000 visitors
annually.

The project should begin on February 7 and end by August 5, 1977.
