WEED SCIENCE RESEARCH REPORT

FORWARD

The field investigations reported herein were conducted at the University of
Florida, Agricultural Research Centers located near Jay and Marianna, Florida. Re-
sults are presented from herbicide efficacy evaluations in corn, cotton, grain sor-
ghum, sweet sorghum, peanuts, and soybeans. Data from studies conducted to determine
the effect of weed competition on peanut yields are also included.

S METHODS USED IN 1983 WEED CONTROL TRIALS AT ARC, JAY AND MARIANNA, FLORIDA.
Studies were conducted at the Agricultural Research Center near Jay,

Florida on Orangeburg-Tifton-Dothan fine sandy loam soils with an organic

matter content of approximately 2% and a pH of 5.5 to 6.0. At the ARC,

Marianna, the soil was a sandy loam with 1.5 to 2% organic matter and a pH

of 6.0. Further details on the methods used in the trials are listed with

the results of each test.

The efficacy of herbicide treatments was evaluated by rating the treated

area for both crop injury and weed control. A scale of 0 to 10 was used with

0 indicating no reduction in crop growth or no weed control and 10 equal to

complete weed control or crop death. The ratings were tabulated and the means

computed for each weed species having sufficient density and a uniform dis-

tribution in the experimental areas. A statistical analysis was made and a

least significant difference value at the 5% level of probability was calculat-

ed for each species rated and crop yield to aid with data interpretation.

Crop yields were determined by harvesting the two center rows of each plot

and converting the yield per plot to bushels per acre and pounds per acre.

The only treatments which provided adequate control of most weeds
present were Cotoran PRE plus SC0224 DP, Surflan + Cotoran PRE
plus Caparol + Bueno 6 DP and Prowl + Zorial PRE + Bladex + Bueno
6 DP. The SC0224 caused significant crop injury while the other
treatments failed to adequately control at least one weed species.

control obtained with Poast, Fusilade, and SC1084 was significantly
reduced. Basagran appeared to have no effect on the grass activity
of Whip. Blazer also significantly reduced the activity of Whip and
SC1084. Fusilade appeared to be less effective against crowfoot
than the other grass herbicides.

The only treatment in this test to provide at least fair late season
sicklepod control in addition to excellent control of the other weeds
present was Treflan PPI + DPX F6025 at 0.25 oz/A POST. DPX F6025 applied
POST was more effective against sicklepod than when applied PRE. SC1056
provided good to excellent early season control of all species present
except sicklepod. Unusually high rainfall early in the season apparently
leached the Sencor which lead to poor late season broadleaf control
with combinations that included this herbicide.

leaf weed control and good crop yields. These included Lasso PRE
plus Vistar EP-A plus Blazer EP + 1, Lasso PRE plus Vistar + Blazer

LSD (.05)


SUMMARY: Rye control was less than acceptable for Roundup at
0.25 #/A regardless of applicator used. At the 0.5
#/A rate the CDA and the 11001 nozzles provided
excellent rye control 2 weeks after application.
The other nozzles tested provided only poor to fair
control at the 0.5 #/A rate.
