WEED SCIENCE RESEARCH REPORT

FORWARD

The field investigations reported herein were conducted at the University of
Florida, Agricultural Research Center located near Jay, Florida. Results are
presented from herbicide efficacy evaluations in corn, cotton, grain sorghum,
sweet sorghum, peanuts, and soybeans. Data from studies conducted to determine the
effect of weed competition on peanut yields are also included.

METHODS USED IN 1982 WEED CONTROL TRIALS AT ARC, JAY AND MARIANNA, FLORIDA.

Studies were conducted at the Agricultural Research Center near Jay,

Florida on Orangeburg-Tifton-Dothan fine sandy loam soils with an organic

matter content of approximately 2% and a pH of 5.5 to 6.0. At the ARC,

Marianna, the soil was a sandy loam with 1.5 to 2% organic matter and a pH

of 6.0. Further details on the methods used in the trials are listed with

the results of each test.

The efficacy of herbicide treatments was evaluated by rating the treat-

ed area for both crop injury and weed control. A scale of 0 to 10 was used

with 0 indicating no reduction in crop growth or no weed control and 10 equal

to complete weed control or crop death. The ratings were tabulated and the

means computed for each weed species having sufficient density and a uniform

distribution in the experimental areas. A statistical analysis was made and

a least significant difference value at the 5% level of probability was cal-

culated for each species rated and crop yield to aid with data interpretation.

Crop yields were determined by harvesting the two center rows of each

plot and converting the yield per plot to bushels per acre and pounds per

acre.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

SUMMARY:
Neither a single application of Paraquat at 0.5 #/A or Roundup at 0.25 #/A
provided adequate control of the rye cover crop. However, a split application
of Paraquat at 0.25 #/A followed six days later by a second application of
Paraquat at 0.25 #/A or Roundup at 0.5 #/A provided excellent cover crop
control. Roundup + Lasso + Aatrex PRE and Roundup PRE plus Aatrex + Oil EP
controlled all weeds present except sicklepod and resulted in the highest
corn yields.

SUMMARY:
Vernam (2.5 #/A) + Extender + Sencor provided better sicklepod and
