WEED SCIENCE RESEARCH REPORT

FORWARD

The field investigations reported herein were conducted at the University of
Florida, Agricultural Research Center located near Jay, Florida. Results are pre-
sented from herbicide efficacy evaluations in corn, cotton, grain sorghum, sweet
sorghum, peanuts, and soybeans. Data from studies conducted to determine the
effect of weed competition on peanut yields are also included.

METHODS USED IN 1981 WEED CONTROL TRIALS AT ARC, JAY, FLORIDA.

Studies were conducted at the Agricultural Research Center near Jay, Florida

on Orangeburg-Tifton-Dothan fine sandy loam soils with an organic matter content

of approximately 2% and a pH of 5.5 to 6.0. Further details on the methods used

in the trials are listed with the results of each test.

The efficacy of herbicide treatments was evaluated by rating the treated

area for both crop injury and weed control. A scale of 0 to 10 was used with 0

indicating no reduction in crop growth or no weed control and 10 equal to complete

weed control or crop death. The ratings were tabulated and the means computed for

each weed species having sufficient density and a uniform distribution in the

experimental areas. A statistical analysis was made and a least significant

difference value at the 5% level of probability was calculated for each species

rated and crop yield to aid with data interpretation.

S Crop yields were determined by harvesting the two center rows of each plot

and converting the yield per plot to bushels per acre and pounds per acre.

Paraquat did not provide adequate control of the rye cover crop and
this resulted in a substantial yield reduction for several of the
Paraquat treatments. Roundup at 1 Ib/A provided only 75 to 80%
control of the rye. In general, treatments which included an early
postemergence herbicide application provided significantly better
weed control than the preemergence treatments.

Treatments which provided fair early season control of sicklepod and
good to excellent control of the other weed species present included
MON097 + Dyanap AC, Lasso + Dyanap AC, Prowl PPI plus Lasso + Dyanap
AC and Balan PPI plus Amiben + Butyrac + Pace POST-2. The Amiben +
Butyrac treatment is particularly impressive because it provided better
than 80% control of 8-inch tall sicklepod.

SUMMARY: Lasso + Dyanap applied EP provided better Florida beggarweed control
and resulted in significantly higher peanut yields than the same
treatment applied AC when only a few weeds had emerged. Compared
to Lasso + Dyanap AC alone beggarweed control was significantly
improved when the treatment was followed by Lasso II or Bladex 15G
applied 4WAP. Bladex 4L at 1 #/A PRE plus Bladex 15G at 2 #/A 4WAP
also provided good Florida beggarweed control.

S731 provided good yellow nutsedge control and resulted in
correspondingly good peanut yields. Dual appeared to provide
better yellow nutsedge control than Lassowhen applied either
as a single "at cracking" application (treatment 4 VS 5) or
as a split application of PPI followed by AC (treatment 8 VS
9). It should be noted, however, that the second set of treat-
ments included equal rates of the two herbicides. When a split
application of Dual at 2.5 #/A PPI plus 2.5 #/A AC is compared
to Lasso at 3 #/A PPI plus 3 #/A AC (treatment 10 VS 12) the
difference in nutsedge control is no longer significant.
MBR20457 gave good nutsedge control but caused some early
season crop injury.

SUMMARY: In general herbicide programs which included a PRE treatment followed by AC and
POST treatments provided the best weed control and highest peanut yields. An

The sorghum seed planted in this test was treated with Ciba-Giegy's
herbicide safener Concep. Much better late season control of sickle-
pod was obtained with Dual + Aatrex EP or Aatrex + Oil EP compared
to Dual + Aatrex PRE. Prowl + Aatrex EP also provided excellent late
season control of both grass and broadleaf weeds. SD91779 applied EP
at 3 lbs/A resulted in good weed control and the highest grain yield.

Summary: MON097 appeared to cause more severe early season crop injury than
did Lasso; however, the sorghum recovered and grain yields were
comparable for the two treatments. Dual + Aatrex EP provided excellent
weed control but caused substantial early season sorghum injury. Dual
+ Milogard provided excellent control of both grass and broadleaf weeds
with minimal early season damage to sorghum from treated seed. The
Aatrex + Oil treatment was applied too late to obtain control of the
weeds present.

Embark and MBR18337 treatments did, however, result in significantly
less sweet sorghum lodging. These materials reduced or eliminated

SUMMARY: The sweet sorghum seed planted for the test was treated with Concep
herbicide safener. Only 2 of the 4 replications were harvested due
to poor crop stand which resulted from dry soil conditions at
planting. Treatments which provided excellent control of both
grass and broadleaf weed species included Paraquat + Dual PRE plus
Paraquat + Aatrex DP and Roundup + Lasso PRE plus Evik + 2,4-D DP.

CGA82725 exhibited fair to good control of crabgrass, goosegrass,
crowfootgrass and annual sedge. Combining Tackle with CGA82725
appeared to reduce the effectiveness of the grass herbicide.
Fusilade at 0.5 #/A provided excellent control of all weed species
present. Dowco 453 was more active than the other postemergence
grass control herbicides tested. It provided good grass control
at 0.125 #/A and excellent control at 0.25 #/A.

Lexone appeared to cause less injury to the smaller soybeans at the
DP-1 time of application than did Lorox. Lexone + 2,4-DB and Lexone
+ Paraquat provided excellent sicklepod and morningglory control for
both times of applications. Similar results were observed with the
DP-2 treatment of Premerge + Lexone. The Lorox treatments resulted
in somewhat poorer weed control. HOE00661 was very effective against
sicklepod but caused some crop injury at the application rates
tested.

The herbicide programs which resulted in the best weed control and
the highest soybean yields included a directed postemergence
treatment of Sencor + 2,4-DB, Sencor + Paraquat or Lorox + 2,4-DB.
All other treatments failed to provide adequate late season weed
control.

Lorox, Premerge, Modown and Igran did not provide acceptable annual
ryegrass control. Both Hoelon and Sencor provided good ryegrass con-
