WEED SCIENCE RESEARCH REPORT

Jay, Florida

FORWARD

The field investigations reported herein were conducted at the Agricultural
Research Center located near Jay, Florida. Results are presented from herbicide
efficacy evaluations in corn, cotton, grain sorghum, sweet sorghum, peanuts, and
soybeans. Data from studies conducted to determine the effect of herbicide carry-
over and weed competition on soybean yields are also included.

METHODS USED IN 1980 WEED CONTROL TRIALS AT ARC, JAY, FLORIDA.


Studies were conducted at the Agricultural Research Center near Jay,
Florida on Orangeburg-Tifton-Dothan fine sandy loam soils with an organic
matter content of approximately 2% and a pH of 5.5 to 6.0. Further details
on the methods used in the trials are listed with the results of each test.

The efficacy of herbicide treatments was evaluated by rating the treated
area for both crop injury and weed control. A scale of 0 to 10 was used with
0 indicating no reduction in crop growth or no weed control and 10 equal to
complete weed control or crop death. The ratings were tabulated and the means
computed for each weed species having sufficient density and a uniform dis-
tribution in the experimental areas. A statistical analysis was made and a
least significant difference value at the 5% level of probability was calculated
for each species rated and crop yield to aid with data interpretation.

Corn and peanut yields were determined by harvesting the two center rows
of each plot and converting the yield per plot to bushels per acre and pounds
per acre, respectively. The entire plot in grain sorghum and soybean tests was
harvested and the plot weights were converted to bushels per acre.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Summary: Most treatments which included a postemergence application resulted in
good to excellent weed control and good corn yields. An herbicide program
involving a grass herbicide applied PPI or PRE followed by a postemergence
over-the-top or directed postemergence application for broadleaf weed
control is one which has consistently provided good broad spectrum weed
control and excellent corn yields during the last 4 years.

Most of the treatments evaluated in the test controlled those weed species
present. In general, the areas subsoiled yielded better than those planted
with the conventional no-till planter. As in previous years, this yield
advantage appeared to be due to better initial crop stand rather than
better root penetration through the plow pan. The in-row subsoil planter
provided better seedbed preparation which resulted in better planter
penetration and seed placement.

Summary: Herbicide programs which included either Treflan + Brake or Treflan + Cotoran
followed by two directed postemergence applications of Cotoran + MSMA, Caparol
+ MSMA or Bladex + MSMA were required to provide season long weed control. Cotton
yields and late season control of sicklepod and tall morningglory were significant-
ly better when the DP treatments were applied. Goal was not as effective as the
other DP treatments in controlling these weeds.

Summary: The chest broad spectrum weed control was obtained with Ramrod PRE plus either
Paraquat + Aatrex DP or Evik + 2,4-D DP. Ramrod + Aatrex PRE also provided

Summary: In contrast to the Sorghum Safener Test conducted at Jay, most of the
herbicide treatments applied at Marianna resulted in substantial early
season sorghum injury regardless of whether or not the seed had been
treated with a safening agent. Injury was observed from both the
acetanilide herbicides (Lasso, Dual, MON097) and the triazine herbicides
(Aatrex, Milogard, Igran). It also appeared that the safening agents,
themselves, caused some early crop injury and delayed crop maturity.

broadleaf weeds.

Summary: Balan (PPI) and Velpar (PRE) provided excellent early season weed control
comparable to that obtained with the standard application of Balan (PPI)
plus Lasso + Dyanap (AC). Several other treatments provided good early
control of all weeds except sicklepod. None of the treatments tested pro-
vided adequate late season weed control,

Summary: Treatments which exhibited good to excellent early season weed control and good
peanut yields included Balan (PPI) plus Lasso + Dyanap (AC) plus either Lexone
or Lasso applied 4 weeks after planting. Balan (PPI) plus Lasso +*Dyanap (AC)
plus Blazer (3WAP) and Balan + Vernam (PPI) plus Bladex (PRE) plus Bladex (4WAP)
provided good early season control of all weeds except sicklepod. Neither Bladex
nor Lexone caused injury to the peanut crop.

Summary: The best late season weed control and highest average peanut yield was obtained with Balan (PPI) plus Lasso
+ Dyanap (AC) plus two postemergence applications of Premerge (Treatment 10). When the different row spac-
ings are compared the yields from the 12-inch rows were often lowest. A possible explanation is that the
standard digger-inverter used during harvest may have left more peanuts in the soil with 12-inch spacing
than with the other row widths. The yield difference between the twin rows and the 36-inch rows is generally
greater with the AC than with the EP applications of Lasso + Dyanap (Treatment 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6, and 7 vs 8).
This appears to be the result of higher peanut yields from the 36-inch rows with the EP applications,

Summary: This test was planted with an in-row subsoil no-till planter. Grasses
proved to be the most difficult to control weeds apparently because the
high amount of rainfall within the first month after planting leached the
herbicides applied for grass control. The highest yielding treatment includ-
ed Paraquat (PRE) plus Lasso + Dyanap (AC) plus 2 postemergence applications
of Premerge. While no recommendations can be made from this single trial,
the results indicate additional research with no-till peanuts is warrented.

Summary: This test was conducted to study relatively inexpensive herbicide programs and,
therefore, the normal PPI application was eliminated. The results indicate that
there was no significant yield increase with any of the postemergence combina-
tions above that obtained from Lasso + Dyanap (AC) alone. It should be noted,
however, that the weed pressure was less in this test than in some of the other
peanut trials and thbt the weed control ratings indicate better late season
control with some of the postemergence treatments.

Summary: Milogard at 1 lh/A caused the least Pearl Millet injury but failed to
control tall morningglory. Igran and Aatrex, while providing excellent
weed control, caused significant crop injury. Dual, Lasso, and MON097
resulted in total loss of the crop, An attempt was made to protect the

1'Shallow incorporation with a rolling cultivator.

Summary: The herbicides in this test were poorly incorporated resulting in erratic
weed control and, in some cases, excessive crop injury. The combinations
which included Lexone usually provided much better early season sicklepod
control than the other herbicide treatments. Dry conditions during the
growing season resulted in poor crop growth which reduced its competitive
ability and resulted in generally poor soybean yields.

Summary: RO 13-8895 applied at 0.5 Ibs/A gave excellent crabgrass control while
BAS90520H provided somewhat less )grass control. The extremely dry
conditions which prevailed at the time of application may have reduced
the effectiveness of these herbicides especially CGA82725 applied with-
out a surfactant. A heavy broadleaf infestation made soybean harvest
impossible.

Summary: M070077 and MC10108 provided good early control of both sicklepod and tall
morningglory with minimal crop injury, Several other treatments exhibited
morningglory control but were weak on sicklepod. Due to the dry conditions,
soybean growth was slow following herbicide application and the subsequent
flush of weed growth made harvest impossible.

Summary: Early postemergence applications of either Blazer or Toxaphene following

Two rows of each plot were planted with Concep treated seed and two rows were untreated. When
Dual and Lasso were applied at the higher rates, the plants from the safened seed yielded more
dry matter than those from the untreated seed. Aatrex + oil (EP) and PRE combinations of Dual
+ Aatrex, Lasso + Aatrex, and Bexton + Aatrex resulted in excellent control of both grass and
broadleaf species. Lack of residual activity resulted in poorer weed control from the 2,4-D
and Banvel treatments.

ATRAZINE CARRYOVER IN A CORN-SOYBEAN DOUBLECROPPING SYSTEM

1 Description: In this test a split-plot experimental design was utilized. Main
plots were rates of atrazine (0, 2, and 4 lbs/A) applied to corn
while sub-plots were intervals between atrazine application and
soybean planting (4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks). All plots were
treated with metalachlor plus metribuzin (2 + 0.38 lbs/A) within
1 day of soybean planting.

Summary: The data from this test indicate that an interval of 8 weeks between
application of 2 Ibs/A atrazine and soybean planting resulted in do
effect on the crop while 4 lbs/A caused about a 10% yield reduction.
An interval of 10 to 12 weeks should be sufficient to permit normal
soybean growth after an atrazine application of up to 4 lbs/A.
