FOREWORD

Field investigations of herbicide efficacy in corn, cotton, grain sorghum,
peanuts, soybeans, wheat, and pastures and herbicide carryover in soybeans, re-
ported herein, were conducted at the Agricultural Research Center near Jay,
Florida during 1979. Single herbicide treatments as well as herbicide combina-
tions of both new and presently recommended materials were evaluated and compared
for crop tolerance and activity against selected weed species.

The experiments reported herein were supported by state appropriation and

METHODS USED IN 1979 WEED CONTROL TRIALS AT ARC, JAY, FLORIDA


Studies were conducted at the Agricultural Research Center near Jay,
Florida on Orangeburg-Faceville-Tifton-Dothan-Troup fine sandy loam soils
with an organic matter content of approximately 2% and a pH of 5.5 to 6.0.
Further details on the methods used in the trials are listed with the results
of each test.

The efficacy of herbicide treatments was evaluated by rating the treated
area for both crop injury and weed control. A scale of 0 to 10 was used with
0 indicating no reduction in crop growth or no weed control and 10 equal to
complete weed control or crop death. The ratings were tabulated and the means
computed for each weed species having sufficient density and a uniform dis-
tribution in the experimental areas. A statistical analysis was made and a
least significant difference value at the 5% level of probability was calculated
for each species rated and crop yield to aid with data interpretation.

Corn and peanut yields were determined by harvesting the two center rows
of each plot and converting the yield per plot to bushels per acre and pounds
per acre, respectively. The entire plot in grain sorghum and soybean tests was
harvested and the plot weights were converted to bushels per acre.

Although causing early season peanut injury, MC10108 at .5 lbs/A or MC10982 at .5 lbs/A in
combination with Lasso PRE and Balan + Vernam PPI provided excellent control of the weed species
present and were among the highest yielding treatments. These treatments were comparable to or
slightly better than the standard application of Balan + Vernam PPI plus Lasso + Dyanap AC. When
Vernam was not included in this combination a significant reduction in sicklepod control and yield

Many of the AC treatments did not provide the sicklepod control
expected, apparently as a result of the application timing in
relation to weed emergence. The AC treatments were made when the
peanuts were in the true "ground cracking" stage and before many
weeds were visible. Treatments which yielded the highest, provided
good to excellent control of most weeds and adequate or nearly
adequate control of sicklepod included Prowl PPI plus Lasso +
Dyanap AC, Prowl + Vernam PPI plus Lasso + Dyanap AC, Lasso +
Ronstar PRE and the standard Balan + Vernam PPI plus Lasso +
Dyanap AC.

In this test the EP applications outyielded AC treatments by 1,000
to 1,500 lbs/A of peanuts. Conditions were such that few weeds were
visible at the time the AC treatments were applied. However, when
EP applications were made 9 days later Florida beggarweed seedlings
had emerged resulting in much better control from the contact
herbicides in the mixtures. The 4WAP applications of Lasso II
increased peanut yields 200 to 600 #/A over the EP treatments alone.
These yield increases from Lasso II applications are not as dramatic
as those obtained during 1978. This may be a result of the high amount
of rainfall and subsequent herbicide leaching which allowed late
season beggarweed growth regardless of herbicide treatment.

A split application of Bladex 4L at 2 lbs/A PRE followed by Bladex
5G at 2 lbs/A 4 weeks after planting resulted in a yield equal to
that of the hand weeded check indicating good peanut tolerance
of the Bladex. The Lasso + Dyanap AC treatments provided poor
control of the beggarweed because application was made before
any weed seedlings had emerged. This test also included a comparison
of a true 5% Bladex granule (5GA) and a mixture of a 15% granule and
blanks (5GB). The results indicate that the true 5% granule
out-performed the blended granule. This probably occurred because with the
the 5% granule the herbicide is more uniformly distributed.

Roundup application resulted in rapid death (within 3-5 days) of
treated Florida beggarweed. Application with the Spray Sickle gave
the best coverage of the weeds and most rapid response. However,
because a fine mist from the spray nozzles coated the underside
of the collection tube, Roundup was inadvertently applied to the
tips of the peanut plants resulting in crop injury. The Roller
provided inadequate control probably because it was mounted on
the rear of the tractor.

The best results were obtained with the Ropewick. When used aL
3mph a 200 lbs/A yield advantage over the Check was obtained.
Although yields of the Ropewick plots were lower than the
cultivated check (3250), the yield increase was still substantial.

Neither IC10982 or MC10108 provided control of sicklepod or tall
morningglory when applied PPI or PRE. Control was somewhat improved
when these materials were applied AC. Combinations which included
Sencor provided the best broad spectrum full season weed control.
While RE28269 provided good grass control a significant amount of
crop injury was observed at 2 Ibs/A PPI.

The standard treatment of Lasso + Sencor gave excellent control of the
weeds present. Combinations of Lasso + Blazer also provided good weed
control. In this test Blazer activity was not affected by either AG98 or
NH4SO4. UBI-S734 appeared to give grass control comparable to that
obtained with Lasso.

All treatments which included Sencor and those which included
Dyanap and Premerge provided good to excellent early season weed
control. However, only the treatments including a directed post-
emergence application provided late season control of both sicklepod

In general, those treatments with Sencor PPI provided better weed
control and higher soybean yields than those without the Sencor.
Blazer or a split application of Toxaphene provided good initial
sicklepod control but allowed a late season infestation. Sencor
+ 2,4-DB and Paraquat + Sencor applied DP over Sencor PPI were the
only treatments which provided better than 90% sicklepod control
all season.

SSummary:


This study was conducted to determine whether metribuzin can be
applied to soybeans after emergence if, due to adverse weather
conditions, the normal preemergence application cannot be made.
Results from a similar test conducted during 1978 indicated that
metribuzin could be safely applied to soybeans up to 5 days after
planting. The 1979 results indicate no adverse affect on soybean
yield even if metribuzin application is delayed until 8 days
after planting. However, it should be noted that the dry weather
conditions which existed during the 1979 metribuzin application
period may have placed the soybean seedlings under moisture stress.
This, in turn, may have resulted in less foliar herbicide
absorption than would have occurred under more favorable moisture
conditions.

Due to the lack of rainfall after application, the preemergence
treatments failed to provide adequate sicklepod control. The highest
yielding treatment was Treflan .5 lbs/A + Sencor 1 Ib/A PP;1
indicating good crop tolerance to the Sencor. Treflan + Sencor
PPI followed by either Sencor + 2,4-DB or Lorox + 2,4-DB DP also
resulted in good weed control and soybean yield.

emergence application provided the best weed control and highest
yields. Lexone + 2,4-DB, Lorox + 2,4-DB, Goal + 2,4-DB, or

Atrazine was applied to corn preemergence at 0, 1,
2, and 4 lbs/A. Four, 8, and 14 weeks after atrazine
treatment the corn was destroyed and soybeans were
planted with no-till equipment. The soybeans were
then treated with 0, 0.38, or 0.5 lbs/A metribuzin.
The planting intervals were main plots of a split-
plot experimental design while the corn and soybean
herbicide applications were arranged as a factorial
set of treatments over the sub-plots.

Description:


In this test a split-plot experimental design was
utilized. Main plots were rates of atrazine (0, 2, and
4 Ibs/A) applied to corn while sub-plots were intervals
between atrazine application and soybean planting (4, 6,
8, 10, 12, and 14 weeks). The 12 week interval was lost
due to dry weather following planting. All plots were
treated with 0.38 Ibs/A metribuzin within 1 day of
soybean planting.

Summary: The results of these two experiments agree with the data collected
in 1978 which indicated that no significant reduction in soybean
yield will result from an application of 2 lbs/A atrazine if the
interval between application and planting is at least 8 weeks. When
4 lbs/A of atrazine is applied to corn, soybean planting must be
delayed until between 10 and 14 weeks after atrazine application.

More severe injury was expected from atrazine carryover when soybeans
were planted 4 weeks after herbicide application. However, the
herbicide was apparently not available to the soybeans as a result
of the dry weather conditions which followed the initial soybean
planting. This would explain the data which show more injury occurring
to soybeans planted 6 weeks after atrazine application than to those
planted after an interval of 4 weeks.

Summary: PIX treatment resulted in a reduction in cotton height at
