FOREWORD

Investigations of herbicide efficacy in corn, cotton, grain sorghum, peanuts,

and soybeans reported herein were conducted in the field at the Agricultural

Research Center near Jay, Florida during 1976. Single herbicide treatments as

well as herbicide combinations of both new and presently recommended materials

were evaluated and compared for crop tolerance and activity against selected

weed species.

The experiments reported herein were supported by state appropriation and

METHODS USED IN HERBICIDE TRIALS

AT ARC, JAY, FLORIDA 1976

Studies were conducted at the Agricultural Research Center near Jay, Florida

on Orangeburg-Dothan fine sandy loam soils with an organic matter content of

approximately 2%. In studies where conventional tillage was used the plots were

12 feet (4 rows) wide by 25 feet long and were arranged in a randomized complete

block design. The plot size in the no-till soybeans following winter wheat study

were 10 feet (4 rows) by 30 feet long and a split-plot experimental design was

utilized.

The crop varieties used and planting dates were as follows: Corn Pioneer

3369A planted April 5, 1976; Cotton Coker 310 planted April 29, 1976; Grain

Sorghum I DeKalb E59 planted April 8, 1976; Grain Sorghum II Northrup King

331 planted June 21, 1976; Peanuts Florunner planted April 27, 1976; Soybeans -

Cobb planted June 8, 1976, and Wheat Holley planted November 20, 1975.

Preplant incorporated treatments were applied within 5 days prior to planting

in all cases and were incorporated to a depth of 4 inches. All preemergence

treatments were applied within 1 day after planting the crop.

The early postemergence herbicides on corn were applied when the corn was

in the 2 leaf stage and the weeds were in the seedling stage. The postemergence

treatments were applied when the corn was in the 7 to 8 leaf stage, grasses were

1-2 inches high and the broadleaf weeds were 1-4 inches tall. Directed post-

emergence treatments were applied when the crop was in the 10-12 leaf stage, the

grasses were 4-5 inches and the broadleaf weeds were 4-8 inches tall.

The cotton postemergence applications were made when the crop was 7-8 inches

tall and the weeds were 2-6 inches high. Treatments involving directed postemergence

application were made when the cotton was 10 inches high and the weeds were 3-8

inches tall.

Postemergence herbicides were applied to the grain sorghum when the crop was

7 inches high and weeds were 1-3 inches, while the directed postemergence treat-

ments were made when sorghum was 15 inches high, grasses 2-4 inches, and

broadleaf weeds 4-8 inches.

The peanut postemergence herbicides were applied when the crop height was 4-5

inches, the grasses were 2-3 inches tall, and broadleaves were 2-6 inches high,

while the soybeans postemergence treatments were applied when the crop was 6-7

inches tall and the weeds were 1-4 inches high. Directed postemergence applications

to soybeans were made when the crop was 20 inches high, grasses were 2-5 inches and

broadleaves were 4-10 inches tall.

The efficacy of herbicide treatments was evaluated by rating the treated area

for both crop injury and weed control. A scale of 0 to 10 was used with 0 indicating

no reduction in stand or vigor and 10 equal to complete control. The ratings were

tabulated and averaged for each weed species having a sufficient density and a

uniform distribution in the experimental areas and a statistical analysis was made

for each species. A least significant difference value at the 5% level of

probability is listed to aid in interpreting the data.

Corn and peanut yields were determined by harvesting the two center rows of

each plot and converting the yield per plot to bushels per acre and pounds per

acre, respectively. Grain sorghum and soybean yields were determined by harvesting

all four plot rows and converting the plot weight to bushels per acre.

Summary: The overall weed density in all three corn studies was less than desired. Because of this and the excellent

growing conditions that prevailed throughout the season the yields, even for the checks, were relatively high and most

treatments provided good weed control. The comparison between the Sutan safteners (R25788 present in Sutan + and R29148)

indicated that both performed equally well. It appears that the higher rates of Sutan are needed to give late season

control of the grasses.

Summary: Preemergence application of the Dual plus Aatrex tank mix provided excellent broad spectrum weed control

as did the prepackaged mixture of these material's active ingredients (CGA24705 + Atrazine). Vel 5026 alone provided

good broadleaf control and when combined with Lasso resulted in good control of both grass and broadleaf weeds. The

combinations of Prowl plus Aatrex and Lasso plus Aatrex also gave good weed control. Dowco 291, while controlling

the weed species present, was phytotoxic to the corn and caused a significant reduction in grain yield. The directed

post treatments resulted in poorer than expected yields because of physical damage caused to the crop by the application

equipment.

WEED CONTROL IN CORN

POSTEMERGENCE

Summary: As with the preemergence treatments, early postemergence applications

of Dual plus Aatrex tank mix and the prepackaged mixture of these materials

provided excellent control of both grass and broadleaf weeds. Vel 4207 gave good

control of the broadleaf weeds. The directed postemergence treatments of Paraquat

plus Aatrex, Lorox plus 2,4-D, and RH 2915 gave good broad spectrum control but

the yields were reduced because of mechanical damage caused by the application

equipment. Except for morningglory, Lasso premergence plus Lorox or Bladex

directed postemergence also gave good overall weed control.

Summary: Several of the weed species were present in lower populations than in the New Compound test; therefore, some

treatments in this experiment may appear to exhibit better weed control than in the previous trial. The dinitroaniline

materials Prowl, Amex, and Basalin, when combined with a sequential cracking treatment of Lasso plus Dyanap, provided

good broadspectrum weed control as did Balan plus Amiben plus Dyanap and the standard treatment, Balan plus Lasso plus

Dyanap. Preplant treatment with Balan plus Sencor resulted in adequate control of all species except cocklebur while the

treatment of Balan plus 2,4-DB was weak on bristly starbur and beggarweed. The Tolban plus Dyanap treatment did not

adequately control either sicklepod or beggarweed.

Summary: Preemergence treatments of GCP5544 plus Dyanap, Sencor plus Lasso plus Dyanap, Probe plus Lasso, and Lasso

plus Dyanap provided good long season weed control. GCP5544 plus Sencor preplant controlled both grass and broadleaf

weeds but caused a significant yield reduction. Prowl plus Sencor controlled most species except morningglory.








WEED CONTROL IN SOYBEANS

POSTEMERGENCE

Summary: The weed pressure was less in this test than in the other soybean

trials; therefore, ratings for several treatments were somewhat higher than

expected. The postemergence application of RH6201 over Lasso preemergence provided

excellent broadspectrum weed control. Treflan preplant plus RH6201 post also

controlled the weeds but resulted in a significant yield reduction. RH2915 alone,

Sencor plus Premerge plus 2,4-DB, and Lorox plus 2,4-DB as directed post

applications were also among the better treatments. As expected, the herbicide

combinations of a material for grass control (GCP5544, Dual, or Lasso) with Dyanap

as a cracking treatment gave good broadspectrum weed control.

Summary: This study was conducted to determine whether Surflan applied to winter wheat would also provide control

of certain weed species in succeeding No-Till soybeans and to investigate the efficacy of several treatments applied

directly to the soybeans. The application of Surflan to winter wheat did not result in any significant differences in

either the wheat or the succeeding soybean crop. It should be noted, however, that there was only a very light

infestation of the weed species (grasses) that Surflanwas most effective against; therefore, these results are not

surprising.

In the No-Till soybeans (see following pages), Paraquat plus Surflan preemergence plus Sencor plus 2,4-DB directed

post resulted in good control of all weed species present. Except for the volunteer wheat, Paraquat or Roundup pre-

emergence plus Lorox plus 2,4-DB also provided good weed control.
