Plate 401 Silver & Goldsmithing I
This might be either a silversmith or a goldsmith, though it is more likely that silver
was the metal being worked. In either case, the master would be a member of the
corps or guild of jewelers, one of the most highly privileged of the companies of Paris,
specializing in Orfevre grossier, that is to say, in plate.
Jewelers formed one of the six senior guilds of the City of Paris. Their statutes dated
from 1260 and limited the number of masters to three hundred, the most fortunate of
whom were quartered in the galleries of the Louvre. No one might be admitted to the
trade without having served an apprenticeship of eight years, after which the candidate
had to submit an original chef d'oeuvre to the critical examination of a jury-except
that there might always be four masters licensed by the King and two by the Di'c
d'Orleans, and every eight years the orphanage of the Trinity had the right to name
two masters whom it had apprenticed from its roster. Widows might carry on their
husbands' shops, but not take apprentices.
Such were a very few of the provisions which guarded and hedged about the trades in
the old corporate regime before the Revolution. The Encyclopedists are often described
as relentlessly opposed to this order of things and dedicated to the competitive tenets
of economic liberalism. So in general they were, but not in as sectarian a fashion as is

Plate 408 The Jeweler I

Vol. VIII, Orfhwre Bijoutier,

Plates 408, 409, 410, 411 The Jeweler I, II, III, IV
Closely related to the goldsmith's art was the jeweler's. His forge is even smaller. The
characteristic work-counter with its pockets underneath each place may still be seen in
the shops of Parisian jewelers. The sales counter is decorated in a manner befitting
the trade, and Madame herself handles the scales and quotes a price which she is, no
doubt, prepared to be reasonable about. The following plates illustrate some of her
wares.
