HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF OLIVEROS HOUSE

(For Press Release)

1. 1798. Sebastian Oliveros, native of the island of Corsica
and living in this City, married, and his profession to navigate
a small sloop that belongs to him, 31 years old (on July 16,
1800) bought the lot of Gonzalei-Montes de Oca family on
Oct. 4, 1798, that had been living in St. Augustine since 1733.

2. April 12, 1815. On this date, on the "Information of
Community Property made by Catalina Usina, widow of Sebastian
Oliveeos, where she solicits permission to sell a house in
which the community property consists, we read: "...I say to
Your Lordship that about eleven years ago my cited husband went
to sea making a trip from this Port to the United States of
America in a schooner of Don Pablo Sabate, who lives here,
which boat and crew perished, according to the news, at -the
hands of pirates; ...."

3. By the said information we know that the widow went to live
to another house of less value, renting the conuina house to
Gaspar Arnau, who had in it ("un salon corrido abajo") a con=
tinuous parlor on ground floor and Ottoto arriba, sin forro")
another upstairs, without furring, fiaally.bought the house
paying for it one thousand, one hundred and fifty pesos because
"the said Arnau occupies in the said house a shop and a way
station" and as it is on the corner, gives him some advantages".
