Education Space for All

The Cofrin Pavilion houses two adjoining
classrooms for an array of activities for all
ages. Newly initiated studio classes instructed
92 students in topics ranging from drawing
to watercolor to batik art. Other activities
hosted in the classrooms included Tot Times,
Family Days and an accompanying video
series to American Matrix.
The Pavilion was also the main site of the
Ham's first Earth Day. Visitors enjoyed
art-making activities in the classrooms and
entertainment in the Pavilion Promenade
ranging from dance performances to live
music, while a Trashformations exhibit
and information tables by community
environmental groups were hosted in the
Harn Galleria.

Outdoor Beautification

A new garden for outdoor sculpture and contemplative art
enjoyment was created between the Cofrin Pavilion and
original building. A generous naming gift in December 20(0
established the Bob and Nancy Magoon Garden in honor c I
Sam and Bessie Proctor.

Caroline J. Rister, a Gainesville resident, Harn member,
University of Florida alumna, retired teacher, avid
gardener and volunteer, worked with crews from UF's
Physical Plant to remove 80 water lilies and lotus from her
home water garden, including several rare and hybridized
varieties, that she then transplanted into the reflecting
pools on the Terrace and in the Magoon Garden, as well
as the pond behind the Harn Museum.

In summer 2006, the blooming Magoon Garden was th,
site for Mike Tringalia's marriage proposal to Michelle 4
Austerman, both recent UF graduates. She said "yes."

The Harn Museum and the McGuire Center for
Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Florida Museum --
of Natural History commissioned four mosaics for the
Cofrin Pavilion Terrace through the State of Florida's r
Art in State Buildings program. Artists Robert Stout
and Stephanie Jurs of Italy's Twin Dolphin Mosaics
created Wings, Petals and Leaves (detail pictured
below) and installed the work in April 2006.

Completion of Pavilion construction gave staff
time to begin renovations on the original Harn
Museum building, including closing all of the
galleries and administrative offices in May
2006 to begin a three-month renovation and
refurbishment of the walls, floors, carpet and
other furnishings of the 15-year-old Museum.
The enormous feat included the removal
of 619 works of art. Visitors enjoyed the
Camellia Court Caf6 and American Matrix in
the Cofrin Pavilion during the renovation.

BUILDING BLOCKS

Acquisitions and thought-provoking exhibitions are among the
building blocks of a successful museum, along with facilitating
understanding through outreach, research, educational activities,
traveling exhibitions, object loans and community participation.

American Matrix: Contemporary Directions for the Harn Museum
(l, .. i., i was not the only exhibition to provide visitors an
exciting look at world-renowned artists. Toulouse-Lautrec: Artist
of Montmartre featured the work of the great French printmaker
who created scenes of Parisian nightlife that would later come
to define the era and its famed cabaret, the Moulin Rouge. The
Harn Museum was the first U.S. venue for El Anatsui: GAWU,
which introduced audiences to an internationally recognized
contemporary Ghanaian artist, El Anatsui, whose latest work
presented a series of metal object sculptures made from
found objects-food tins, aluminum roofing and bottle caps.

The education staff created a stimulating variety of
learning opportunities for children, students and adults.
Programs for children and families included 10 Family
Days, 20 Tot Times, an Earth Day festival and Chinese New
Year celebration. In support of educators, staff offered four
educator workshops and a host of resources for students and
teachers, along with a Summer Teacher Institute. Nearly 4,000
students participated in 165 tours.

Visitors experienced 17 Gallery Talks, four "My Favorite Things"
Gallery Talks featuring local public figures, 12 lectures, two
performances and a film series that correlated to the Toulouse-
Lautrec exhibition.

Parisian Cabaret at the Harn was a unique collaboration that included
an environmental performance by University of Florida's School
of Theatre and Dance depicting the singers, dancers and colorful
characters of all types from the lively and rowdy cabaret life of Toulouse-
Lautrec's Paris.

Collaboration with other UF colleges and units is a continuing focus of
the education staff. The Harn Eminent Scholar Lecture Series co-sponsored
by the School of Art and Art History enjoyed a banner year of programs
headlined by a lecture by Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Director Glenn
Lowry, pictured top left (photo, Michael C. Weimar, The G,(,, i/ rl,- Sun, front

Other highlighted University collaborations occurred with the School of
Architecture, Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, Society of Art History
Graduates, International Center, UF Student Government, Center for Jewish
Studies, Center for Asian Studies and Center for African Studies.

Curator of African Art: Susan Cooksey, Ph.D.
The Harn African collection was enhanced by a generous gift of rare
Somali items of personal adornment including an elaborate 18th
century porte koran from donors John and Katheryne Loughran. The
necklace is fashioned with silver, amber, agate and ivory beads and has
a tubular cylinder adorned with bells. The porte koran, with a cylinder
that holds koranic script inserted by a holy man, was designed to serve
as a woman's necklace to both beautify and protect. The porte koran and
other objects from Somalia in this collection form a significant part of a
new collecting area of objects from northeast Africa, including Ethiopia
and Somalia.

BUILDING BLOCKS

Outreach

Skilled professionals share knowledge and
insight with diverse populations to increase art
understanding, one of the building blocks to art
appreciation.

Funded by a three-year grant from the MetLife
Foundation, the Art For Life program offered
143 older adults in senior residences docent-led
presentations featuring posters of works of art in
the Ham's permanent collection. Goals for the
program included honoring the life experience
of older adults and engaging in interactive
discussions about the artworks. Locations visited
included the Atrium, Summerville, The Village,
B'nai Israel Friendship Circle and the Gainesville
Health Care Center.

Education staff developed a curriculum resource
program called Making a Case for Florida Art.
Docents give a presentation about the Ham's
Florida art and deliver suitcases filled with art
resources to fourth grade classrooms, who then
visit the Harn to experience the art and return to
their classrooms to make their own art.

In 2006 the Harn was invited to replicate a
research study called Vital Visionaries that
originated at Johns Hopkins Medical Center
and Baltimore's Visionary Art Museum and was
funded through the national Society for Arts in
Healthcare. The study investigated the attitudes of
medical students toward older adults by pairing
15 senior citizens and 15 first or second-year
medical students for multiple museum visits.

d

Over a period of two months, the pairs
viewed and considered exhibitions;
created poetry together; saw their poems
interpreted through modern dance and
music; and created collages inspired by
works in the Harn collection. The project
was a collaboration between the Harn, UF
Center for Arts in Healthcare Research and
Education, Shands and Santa Fe Community
College's PrimeTime Institute.

In November 2005 Harn Museum staff,
interns and volunteers interacted with
visitors at the Downtown Festival and Art
Show and distributed promotional materials.
They hosted interactive art-making activities
at Gainesville's Fifth Avenue Arts Festival in
April 2006.
