SUBJECT: De Mesa environmental control system
It has come to my attention that there was a problem with the heat and
air system in the DeMesa House this last weekend. I understand that you
accidentally flipped the wrong switches off on Friday at closing time, so
that the heat and air system, rather than the lights, was turned off for
about 16 hours.
The heat and air system in DeMesa House operates through the use of
water which is brought from a well by an electric pump. If the system in
the house is ever completely turned off, as it was on Friday, it is possible
to cause the pump to burn up and have to be replaced, which would be a very
expensive emergency. Luckily, the pump did not burn up this time.
In addition, because the house contains historic objects, it is imperative
that a constant temperature be maintained to conserve them.
I understand that the switches you should have turned off are painted
orange, and that a notice has now been posted at the switches stating that
the others are not ever to be touched.
In the future, please be very sure that the environmental control system
is never turned off. The contents of the house, as well as the life of the
pump, should not be jeopardized again. Thank you.
