Dear Mrs. Wood;

I am distressed that poor Mrs. Jennings has been so.anxious ove

her husband. Am going to write her right away. Was not sure of her

address until your letter came.

Am leaving town to-day, before being able to secure a chairman

for you from Alachua County. However, I leave the master in good han
as Mrs. George Morris, president 20th Century Club, will try to get

some one for you. Her first effort will be to try to get Irs. Rice

to re-consider. You should hear some thing from here within the next

few days.

Yours sincerely,

Dn.ar I'rs. Love:

On amount of the continued serious illness

of Mr. Jenrings, Mrs. Jennings has haz4 to stay in Palm Beach

with him, and has left the office in my hands.

As you perhaps know, Mra. JenninZs has taken the

State O hirtLanthip of the Woihan's Division, Florida Educationa

Ter'eraioe Crpi ti'n, andl i trying, -to .-gauize the state

vnry nuoh the sIre aa she dir: for the Liberty Loan Camrpains.

3he wivs ;oinL to try 3and set in touch with you

while you were hero attending the Baptist Convention, to

ask if you would aooept the Ch.irr nh p for your county,

formal appointment of whiuh I enclose. There is nothing

on file to indicate she talked to you, hence this letter.

Mr. Jenningse w'as so very ill here at the time of the convention

I rather doubt she got to see you.

This is a special appeal from the G(overnment for

Law Enforoement work, and I trust it will be possible for you

to undertake it. The campaign for dunda will only be for

two weeks, and you will have the assistance of the men's

committee, the chairman of which is Hon. W.B. GQeer,

I

I think the letter of appointment explains the process of

organization, which is very simple, and you would have a

small fund to expend in gasoline and railroad fare whenever

you felt you had to travel thru your county; also stationery

and postage. The amount is very small, as you see, bqt I

doubt if the campaign will last nore than to the end oft April.

The main thing will be to get your town and communltp chairmen

appointed at once, and then have them appoint their Zocal

,-ori iittoe,. Thsy car begin to work thru the schools ind

.titatu lari enfDro6imentv. You oan ask the Home Demonstration

A,&nt& to iv* talks on law-enforcanent and get your\i..lnisters

t C p-'each on the subjs;t thro-uhout the county.

I hope it w'7ill be possib-le for- ycu to accept thia

bf thie work vary much And also the pleasure of working with
you and Br. Shahl, who is one of our mount public apikited
citizens. Ikowever, rliht at this time of the year, Mrs.
Jennins, it is impossible for me to aooet anything that
requires a great deal of my time and I an unaoibl to draw
from the forrja.. ipp6tntment just what the duties of this
chairimaniahip would be, what the campaign really is, whether
it is it drive for membership or merely support and before
aooeptini this I will ask you to explain a little more
explicitly what my duties are. I will advise you immediate-
ly on receipt of same whether I can accept or not, and trust
that you will appreciate it is not my desire to shirk but
existing conditions here, as I am at business every day,
makes it impossible at this busy season to accept anything re-
quiring a great Amount of my time."

I am not writing to her as I thouLht it beat to
send you the letter, or copy of same, as I did not know what
you might be doing there. You could probably handle it
better from there anyway.

I have written to every one on our list that has not
replied to our appointment letter, and also to the dietriot
Vice Chairman, as you requested, asking their assiatanoe.
rave'pulled all the strings' know how and if I don't get
some acceptance it won't be because I haven't tried. Are

Dear Mrs. JenninLs:

After wiring you this morninL, I received
a letter from Mrs. Wright giving me the nrare of Mrs.
W.C. Richards, as Chairman of Hillsborough Co.

Also a letter from Mrs. D.P. Council,
of Lake Worth, whom we had asked to serve as chairman for
Palm Beach Co. Her letter reads as follows:

"Yours re-the County Chairmanship of the Edu.i'evp.C.:::.ai n
received and I appreciate the honor conferred on me in beinL
requested to accept this appointment. I appreciate the need
of the work very much and also the pleasure of working with
you and Dr. Stahl, who is one of our most 1:ublic spirited
citizens. -Tc.ever, right at this time of the year, Mrs.
Jennings, it is impossible for me to accept anything that
requires a great deal of my time and I am uni.'le to draw
from the formal appointment just what the duties of this
chairmana.3ip would be, what the car'.aign really is, whether
it is a drive for membership or merely support and before
accepting this I will ask you to explain a little more
explicitly what my duties are. I will advise you immediate-
ly on receipt of same whether I can accept or not, and trust
that you will appreciate it is not my desire to shirk but
existing conditions here, as I am at business every day,
makes it impossible at this busy season to accept anything re-
quiring a great amount of my time."

I am not writing to her as I thought it best to
send you the letter, or copy of same, as I did not know what
you might be doing there. You could probably handle it
better from there anyway.

I have written to every one on our list that has not
replied to our appointment letter, and also to the district
Vice Chairman, as you requested, asking their assistance.
Have'pulled all the strings'I know how and if I don't get
some acceptance it won't be because I havntt tried. Are
you going to try to organize the state after next week, the
time of the drive?

Was so l-td Mrs. Blount said she would do the work.
She accptedrt$ht away, althot she said she was very

I

f

busy with the Near F.st Relief work just now. She is
going to try to call a special meeting of her Board Friday
of this week, to see what they can do for this Temperance
work. Mrs. Broward, Mrs. Minimum and Mrs. O'Donald, all
said they would call her too.

Mrs. OtDonald is not doing any work at all this motth
account of the man Press Chairman sayinL everything must
go thru his hands. She says she knows he would not let
her stories go thru as he would not consider the kind of
information she would give out, good newspaper stuff. I
sent you her letter, which explains everything I believe.

Following is a complete list of the chairmen we have
up to date.

DeSoto, Mrs. S.W. Bail, Arcadia
Hernando, L.S. Petteway, Brooksville
Hillsborough, Mrs. W.C. Richards, Tampa
Jefferson, Mrs. John Cook, Montioello
Lee, Effie Henderson, Ft Myers.
Levy, J.E. Hughes, Cedar Keys
Marion, C .W. Martin, Ocala
Monroe, A.H. McInnis, Key West
Okeechobee, W.R. Terrell, Okeechobee
Osceola, E.S. Hall, Kiss3imrnr'
Pasco, Miss Sarah E. Coleman, Dade City
Polk, Mrs. W.C. Norvel, Lakeland
Volusia, Theo. Strawn, Deland
Duval, B.W. Blount, Jax,

I hann't had any list of appointments made by any of them
yet, but will write them all tomorrow, asking for same.

Mrs. Wright said she would be here the last of this week
as she supposed that would be all for her to da.

It is still raining here, altho' not as hard as it
did Sunday and M:ond-y. Its been terrible all right and
we will be so glad to have the sun shine a-abn.

Hope Mr. JenninLs continues to improve. Mr. Mahon
was so glad to hear he was better and said he was going to
write to you all today.

They are having some wonderful meetings at the church
this week, but of course I hadn't been able to go but once,
and that last night.
Lovingly,
tI

My dear Kr:-. Jennings:

I received the appointment as County
Chairman of the Woman's Division some tire ago,
and thought I had written, refusing it. If I
did not, I sincerely befr your pardon. I have
spoken to several regarding it, but have not
found anyone willing to take it -- so am not
able to send you any name, for which I am very
sorry.

As for myself, I have now more than
I can manage well, and have a regular business
position as book-keeper here, so .it would be
impossible for me to undertake it. Lore than
that, I have no talents along the ori~ i:"ization
line. Of course I amr heartily interested in
the work, and wil] give it all the sur -ort I
possibly can.
Very sincerely yours, ("
