Dear Mr. Pappass
As Chairman of the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, I would like to take
this opportunity of expressing oar deep interest in the Greek Orthodox Church's
project within the historic district, and, acting on your request, briefly outline the
Board's position on this.
We are, as you know. concerned with any changes or modifications made to the physi-
cal environment of this area and feel that any change should reflect a sincere effort
en the owner's part to maintain the authentic atmosphere that the Board has been
striving so hard to achieve.
In regards to the Miaorcan Chapel site, we would prefer to see the authentic restora-
ties of the existing structure sad the reconstruction of the missing wings to the east
as we feel there is ample documentary and archaeological data available to accom-
plish this with a relatively high degree of accuracy.
Second, in order of preference, would be the restoration of the existing s structures
and the utilization of the remaining space to the east as the site of a suitable commem-
orative monument, providing this monument is executed in a proper scale so as not
to dominate the area.
We are, of course, open to suggestions and would welcome the opportunity of pursu-
tag the matter more fully, perhaps at an informal conference in the near future.
