Re: Reconstruction of Geronimo de Hita House
Dear Bill,
As you requested, I am returning two signed copies of the grant agreement and a
revised budget. Note that we have added some contractual monies to bring electrical
service into the building and to install copper tubing in the floor, so that in the
future we will be able to provide radiant heat. Since the grant is not sufficient
to.complete the project, we plan to earmark for it next year's appropriation from the
City of St. Augustine. That should be more than enough. Excess funds will be trans-
ferred back to the Fixed Capital Fund when the project is finished.
There is a possibility that we may want to reconstruct the Gonzalez House, the
foundations of which lie immediately north of those of the de Hita House. This would
require no change in the budget, and the building would be used for the same purpose,
educational programs. In effect, the only change would be the name. I trust there
would be no problem.
On behalf of the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, I would like to thank
the Bicentennial Commission of Florida for its support of our program. Thanks to
Bicentennial funding we have made considerable progress over the last few years in both
research and interpretation. Now, with these latest monies, we will be able to provide
for the first time an educational facility specifically for-the State's schoolchildren.
The Commission's contribution is thus an investment in our children's future, which
should continue to pay dividends even as the Bicentennial celebration recedes into the
past.
Sincerely yours,
Overton G. Ganong
