The site presently contains the partially excavated tabby foundations
of two houses. In 1764 they were owned, respectively, by Bernardo
Gonzalez about whom little is known, and Don Geronimo de Hita, a member
of one of St. Augustine's most prominent criollo families.
The property has been excavated by the Florida State University
field school in historic sites archaeology under the direction of Dr.
Kathleen A. Deagan. It was also the subject of an historical report by
Dr. Overton G. Ganong, staff historian for the Historic St. Augustine
Preservation Board. Reports are on file with this agency.
The Board proposes to complete the excavation of the foundations
and to stabilize them using a grout and cap composed of an acrylic polymer,
white portland cement and sand.
Interpretative signing is planned, although these costs are not
considered in this application. The site is exposed to over 400,000 visitors
Local matching funds will come from the annual City/County appro-
priation which is marked for capital projects.
Completion is expected by January 1, 1977.
