I'd like to thank you for all the great questions you've submitted
throughout this semester! --Jen Ramos, ELI Weekly editor

Q: At what age do men and women usually marry?

A: The median age for first time marriages in the U.S. for the year
2003 was 27 and 25 years old for men and women respectively. This
statistic comes from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Q: Do any families object to cohabitation before marriage?

Yes, I'm sure there are people who object to their son or daughter
living with their partner before marriage. Of course, as always,
American society is very diverse in its beliefs and opinions. Attitudes,
however, have been greatly relaxed through the past decades.
According to U.S. Today, more than 2/3 of married couples lived
together before they were married. In my lifetime, I have seen
people's opinions of cohabitation change considerably. Whereas
living together outside of marriage was once considered an offense to
a person's family and the community, I believe very few people still
view it from that perspective. In fact, the number of couples living
together increased 10 times between 1960 and 2000.
