MIDTOWN BEACH NOURISHMENT PROGRAM: SEDIMENTATION MONITORING
October 1995 to February 1996
INTRODUCTION
This report describes the methods, schedule and results obtained from the Sedimentation Monitoring program associated with the beach nourishment project at Midtown Beach in the Town of Palm Beach. The overall purpose of the project is to document suspended sediment rates in the vicinity of the project and in areas distant from the project, the comparison of which allows identification of the sedimentation attributable to the nourishment project. This project commenced on October 18, 1995 with the installation of seven sediment collectors and is still underway with completion of field data collection scheduled for mid-October 1996. Thus this document is a progress report from commencement of the project to February 14, 1996.
DESCRIPTION OF THE OVERALL PROJECT
The beach nourishment project at Midtown Beach entailed the placement of approximately 800,000 cubic yards along 5,400 feet of shorefront. The sand was removed from a borrow area extending in the north south direction from approximately 2, 000 feet south of the south jetty to approximately 4,800 feet south of the south jetty. In the east west direction, the borrow area extended from approximately 1,600 feet from the shoreline to a distance of 2,500 feet from the shoreline, see Figure I for the relative locations of the borrow and project areas. The material dredged was transported the approximately 4.0 miles by pipeline from the borrow area to the nourishment site.
The permit conditions required that sedimentation monitoring be conducted to document any potential adverse effects to the natural reef that runs nearly parallel to the shoreline and is located approximately 1,000 feet seaward of the shoreline in the vicinity of the beach nourishment. In addition to concerns of the natural reef, a so-called "pile of rocks" is present and aligned perpendicular to the shoreline at a location near the south end of the Breakers Hotel. This pile of rocks is the debris from a pier that was once located at this site. The permit conditions called for a total of seven sedimentation stations, including two on the rock pile and two at a sufficient distance north and south from the nourishment area to represent ambient conditions.

FieldlLips
As noted, the sediment traps were installed on October 18, 1995. A description of the field activities from that time to February 14, 1996 is presented in Appendix A. As noted in Appendix A, during the nourishment operations, an attempt was made to monitor the traps on a weekly basis throughout the nourishment period and biweekly thereafter; however, on several occasions, this schedule was precluded by energetic wave conditions. Dredging commenced on October 18, 1995 and was completed on December 2, 1995.
Description of Sedimentation Apparatus
The locations of the seven sedimentation stations are shown in Figure 2. Each of these stations consists of three settling tubes of a schedule 40 PVC with inside diameter of 5 cm. The three settling tubes are arranged in a triangular platform with the centers spaced 16.5 cm apart, Each settling tube consists of two parts: the settling tube which is approximately 46 cm long and the collection canister which is approximately 15 cm long and connected to the base of the settling tube. The sedimentation stations include a weighted stand and a vertical pipe to which the three settling tubes are attached. Figure 3 shows the sediment collection apparatus.
Field Procedures
During field collection of the samples and replacement of the settling tube and canister assembly, the assembly is removed from the stand and capped to prevent loss of sediment and an empty collection tube and canister assembly is affixed to the stand.
Analysis Procedures
After the collection tubes have been brought back to the laboratory in Gainesville and the sediment has had ample time to settle, the water above the collection canister is decanted and the canister is separated from the collection tube. The contents of the canister are washed onto a # 200 sieve for wet sieving with the sieve seated over a container to retain any fine particles washed through the sieve. To facilitate this separation process, the sample is brushed gently as it rests on the #200 sieve. The container is then set aside for 24 hours to allow settling of the fine particles.
The coarse sand particles (ie, of a diameter not passing the # 200 sieve) remaining in the sieve are washed into a labeled and tared drying tin. This coarse fraction is then oven dried at 1000 C overnight and later weighed and recorded. To determine the weight of the fine sediments, the excess water is first removed using a vacuum pump and then the sample is transferred to a tared and labeled

The total, fine and coarse sample results were each then analyzed as follows. For each of these sample representations, the mean of the three settling tube results and their associated standard deviations, (j, were determined as

where x represents the average of the three samples and the two in the denominator is standard for three samples in a group.
The mean sample results for the coarse and fine fractions are presented in Figures 4 and 5, respectively. As noted in Appendices A and D, on eleven occasions, individual collection devices were found laying on their sides or tilting excessively due to either large waves or dragging by boat anchors. In these cases, the results were not included in Figures 4 and 5.
Appendix A provides a description of each of the twelve field trips made between October 18, 1995 and February 14, 1996. Appendix B presents the coarse fraction individual plots for each of the monitoring sites. Appendix C presents the same information for the fine fraction. Finally, Appendix D presents tabulations of all the detailed data forming the basis for this report.
DISCUSSION
As can be seen from Figures 4 and 5, it is evident that the coarse sediment fraction was much greater quantitatively than the fine fraction. The maximum depositional rate for the coarse fraction was 5345 mg/hour whereas the value for the fine fraction was 102 mg/hour. Also, it is clear that the sedimentation rate at the shallow water site on the Rock Pile, Station E- 1 is much greater than the stations farther seaward. The maximum coarse and fine rates at Station E-1 are 5345 and 102 mg/hour, respectively. The largest corresponding rates of the other collectors in deeper water are 1586 and 43 mg/hour, respectively. Finally, the deposition rates are somewhat greater for the collectors in the vicinity of the nourishment than at the two reference sites (Sites A and F). The maximum coarse and fine deposition rates at the reference sites are 1241 and 27 mg/hour whereas the values in the vicinity of the nourishment (not considering the nearshore site, E- 1) are 1586 and 43 mg/hour, respectively.

DESCRIPTION OF FIELD TRIPS
The sections below describe briefly the field trips that were conducted in the time frame corresponding to this report: October 18, 1995 to February 14, 1996.
Trip 1: Installation
10-18-95 Travel to Palm Beach in preparation for sand trap installation.
10-19-95 Installation of sand traps at 5 sites (A,B,C,D, and El). Site A was installed on
sandy bottom, since there was no hard bottom in the area.
10-20-95 Installed remaining two sites (E2 and F). Site F installed on sandy bottom.
Very poor visibility during installation due to excessive rainfall.
Trip 2: Servicing of Traps
10-26-95 Recovered sites El and F the first day. On the second day sites E2 and D were
recovered. Site C could not be located. Transects were established adjacent to R-98 and R-96 for biological monitoring. Sites A, B, and C were retrieved the third day.
The sand trap at site C had moved and was on its side. Installed screw anchors and
sub-surface buoys to mark transects (R-98 and R-96).
Trip 3: Servicing of Traps
11-07-95 Serviced all seven sites, and assisted in biological monitoring. Sand trap at site E-1I
was on its side.
Trip 4: Servicing of Traps
11-15-95 Serviced all sites and assisted in biological monitoring. Site C was over on its side.
11-21-95 Seas 4'-6' all week could not get out to recover traps.

Trio 5: Servicing of Trans

11-28-95 Traveled to Palm Beach, seas were again too rough to go out. Small craft
warnings.
Trip 6: Servicing of Traps
12-05-96 Serviced all seven sites. Assisted in Biological monitoring.
Trip 7: Servicing of Traps
12-18-95 Serviced traps A, B, C, D, E-1I and E-2 on first day. Finished trap F on second day.
Assisted in biological monitoring second day. Sand trap at site C was on its side.
One tube on site ElI was broken. Marker buoys from four sites missing.
Trip 8: Servicing of Traps
1-10-96 Serviced all seven sites. Replaced marker buoys that were missing. Tried to
stabilize sand trap at site C which was on its side.
Trip 9: Servicing of Traps
1-31-96 Serviced all seven sites. Station B was on its side, and we had to replace the
marker buoy. Station D was setting at tilt of about 700 off of the horizontal.
The support pipe was bent and could not be corrected. E-1 was tilted about 600 off horizontal. E-1 position was corrected. F had scour about the bottom and
the marker buoy was replaced.
Trip 10: Servicirng of Traps
2-14-96 Stations B, D and E-i were on their side when recovered. Station D had been
displaced from its original location by about 50-100 feet. It was repositioned on a transect line. B was repositioned and three bags of concrete were added to
provide stability.

Scheduled Future Servicing of Sediment Collectors

The scheduled service intervals for the duration of the project will be every two weeks until October 18, 1996. The possibility of the occurrence of high wind, waves and rain during the coming months may cause the collection interval to vary during this time period. Also adverse weather conditions in September and October may affect the nominal two week retrieval intervals.
The sand traps and supporting structures are scheduled to be completely removed during the last retrieval, around the 18th of October, 1996.
