Need:
The key to controlling many invasives is being able to identify them. Without an informed community, you run the
risk of the classic postcard that reads: "Kudzo-Coming to a theatre near you" with an image of a building
blanketed in green. The Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council lists 56 Category II invasive exotics that have increased
but have not yet "altered Florida plant communities to the extent shown by Category I species." These potential
invaders are the focus of this grant.
The purpose of Identifying the Invaders project is to digitize and make available over the Web, University of
Florida herbarium specimens to help researchers, natural areas managers, and citizens to identify potential invasives.
Associated geospatial and timeline documentation data from the specimen labels will be included. The project is
intended to provide visual data of sufficient detail to assist citizens and students in recognizing invasives, and to
provide locally initiated state and NGO programs with good, reliable, research quality information. Digital images
will be made available as part of the existing herbarium image database
[http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/natscilherbarium/cat/imagelist.htm]. Relevant invasive sites will be encouraged to link
to these images, but appropriate acknowledgement will be requested.
Significance of Herbarium Specimen Digital Images
High-resolution herbarium specimen images complement existing plant identification resources. These high-
resolution images serve as research surrogates for the actual specimens, reduce wear and tear, and are accessible to a
wider audience. Captured at a 1:1 ratio, the images are compressed using MrSID software that is Web servable
without loss of detail (http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/natsci/herbarium/cat/catdigitalimaging.asp)
Specimen images offer a number of advantages to field photographs and line drawings:
Herbarium specimen images generally depict diagnostic characters better than photographs.
Typically, the specimens are pressed with attention to appropriate features. The images offer
aspects of the plant not discernable in drawings such as textures.
Herbarium specimens are associated with label information that may relate them to other
specimens.
Herbarium specimens serve as voucher material for research studies and provide a stable reference
for documentation. This attribute is of particular value in scientific studies.
Two agencies will be involved in Identifying the Invaders. The Collections Manager of the University of Florida
Herbarium will select appropriate specimen sheets for digitizing and supervise the student assistant who will
perform data entry and assist with specimen preparation. Staff at the Digital Library Center (DLC), University of
Florida Libraries will capture digital images of the specimens, archive the original uncompressed TIFFs, and create
the SID compressed derivatives. The SID images will be served from a server maintained by the Florida Center for
Library Automation (FCLA). Prior agreements have been negotiated with FCLA to provide this function
I
Timeline
It is expected that this project can be completed in approximately 8 weeks. Because of money allocation timing,
hiring vagaries, etc., images should be available no later than February 28, 2003.
Detailed Budget
1. Personnel
Camera operator to digitally capture 40 herbarium specimens
(40 images x 4 hours x $10/hour=$1,600)
Included in the tasks are multiple images for details on inflorescence,
leafs, fragment packets, etc., image enhancement, image derivative production,
burning TIFFs to CDs, and FTPing SIDs to server
1- Herbarium student assistant
(20 hr/wk @ $8/hr=$160 x 8 wks)
This assistant will transfer label information into the searchable
database and help prepare specimens for imaging.
