COaney Final Examination


Answer at least two, but no more than three, of the following ques-
tions:

1. Why is economic dovelopmont so crucial a question for policy-
makers in Latin America today? Shouldn't political leaders
leave economics to the economists and planuror and and et on
with the task of governing?

2. Since the military government took over in 1964, Brazil has
shown impressive rates of growth, measured in terras of increase
in its Gross National Product. Give a critique of a develop-
ment model based upon economic measures (either in terms of
Brazil if you know enough about it, or in general terms appli-
cable to Third World countries).

3. Assess the positive and negative aspects of the current
Chilean experiment in laying the groui. work for a socialist
economic system within a democratic political fra0Lework. Do
you think the Chilean model has wider applc ability to the
other countries of Latin America? Give reasons for your
answer.

~.. What can the agrarian sector contribute to economic develop-
ment. If you were a policymaker in a Latin Axaorican country,
what kinds of measures would you propose for agriculture and
the rural population within the frameriTork of an over-all
development program?

5. Peru's military government provides yet another model for
development. Assess the social and economic role of ATITtar(the)
SEXamS (in Peru, if you know enough about it, or in general
terms applicable to Third TJorld countries .
