Mid-term Examination


Answer two of the following four questions:

il Discuss the anti-war movement of the 1960's and the accompany-
ing tendency to restrain and control dissent in terms of the
relationship among the following: consensus, basic political
institutions and arra-ngements, democracy, authority, stability,
civil liberties, legitimacy, coercion, facismo

2, What is the "iron law of oligarchy?" Do you agree or disagree
that such a law exists inevery group or association of haman
persons, and why? If an iron law actually operates, what are
the implications for democratic government?

3 Your assignment, should you decide to accept it, is to discover
how political power is distributed in Rockland County, New York.
What research strategies could you adopt?

4o Suppose, for the moment, that William Domhoff's theory on who
rules in America is correct, Suppose, too, that your aim is
to become a member of the Domhoffian power elite. How would you
proceed, given your actual situation and present *power resources?"
And what would be your chances for success?
BONUS QUESTION if you wish to answer a third question

5, Many observers say that there is little possibility of a military
or civilian "takeover" of government in the United States because
of our particular "political culture." Agree or disagree with
this statement and give reasons for your answer
