Woman Bound and Gagged
in Gulfport Home
By Cathy Salustnr
Jackie Ashley sat in her liv-
ing room, talking with her
niece, when she heard someone
knocking at her door.
"I answered the door and there
-1 was a woman standing there
completely naked and hysteri-
', cal," Ashley told The Gabber.
"She was bleeding a lot; from
her hands, feet, and little cuts.
She had what looked like clear
medical tape around her wrist.
She said this guy had her bound
all day and he was gonna 'come back and get me'."
The 24 year old woman, whose name Gulfport Po-
lice have not released, told Ashley that their neigh-
bor, James VanDyke, had bound her to a board with
bungee cords and duct tape. She also told the Ashleys
that he had put some sort of helmet on her. When
VanDyke left for work, the woman freed herself, broke
a window, and escaped, police say. The woman told

Casino Floor
Investigation
Gull'port Leisure Services Director
Jim O'Reilly and Public Works Director
Don Sopak commissioned John Parks
to perform an inspection of the Casino
because people had complained to staff
that the floor had a "bouncy" feel. Parks
conducted a visual re-examination of
the under pining, concrete piers, and
wood framing. The inspection did not
reveal any degradation, deterioration,
or damage to piers or wood framing.

Man Spends 18th
Birthday in Jail
Darius Wilson celebrated his 18th
birthday going to jail. Gulfport police
officers found Wilson's fingerprints at a
burglary crime scene and tracked him
down to St. Pete Beach. Working in
tandem with the St. Pete Beach police,
Gulfport Lieutenant Rob Vincent found
and arrested Wilson at his friend's
home, where police estimate he had
spent roughly one week in hiding.

Late Summer Catch
Qi Ch.ll, WAlilern

Martha Loyd (r) helps daughters Winfreed, 6, and Estill, 8, dip their cane poles into Lake
Jorgensen at last Saturday's Fish-A-Thon. "We came out last year, but we didn't catch
anything," said Loyd. Her daughters were happy to report, however, that they'd managed
to hook a "medium" sized fish this time around.

Though the heat may be with us for some
time, it's the end of summer for most kids.
While families are back-to-school shop-
ping, the city of St. Petersburg and the
civic organization Civitan sponsored one
last bit of fun Saturday with their Annual
Fish-A-Thon at Lake Jorgensen.
In its 59th year, this event provides kids
and families with an opportunity to forget
about books and enjoy the outdoors. Lake
Jorgensen, behind the Main Branch Li-
brary in St. Pete, is home to water birds,
turtles and various fish varieties, and a
great location for friendly competition.
"I think it's really a good event," said Mar-
tha Loyd of St. Petersburg, as she helped
her daughters dig worms out of a bait cup.
"I like to support the community, and they
let the fish loose when they're done."
Open to children ages 3-12, this year's
Fish-A-Thon attracted "about 500 fishers,"
according to Civitan representative and
former Club President Jim Belcher. "I be-
lieve it's the most we've ever had."
From 9am to 11pm, entrants used cane
poles and live worms provided by sponsors
to coax the best catch. Winners were di-
vided by age group, with prizes awarded
for the most caught and largest fish -
which turned out to be an 875 gram (over
2 lb) catfish.

Woman, from front page

Ashley she had jumped VanDyke's
privacy fence, as well astheirs, to
get to their door.
"She was hysterical- crying with-
out tears," Ashley said. "It was like
out of a movie, I swear to you."
Jackie Ashley and her husband
Harold, who live behind VanDyke
on Upton Street, called 911. Gulf-
port police responded and posted
two officers outside VanDyke's
home. Officers Jesse Kellington
and Zach Mills waited to arrest
VanDyke when he left work shortly
before midnight.
"He came home to check on his
captive and was surprised to find
that the police were there waiting
for him," Gulfport Lieutenant Rob
Vincent said.
Police suspect VanDyke beat the
woman after VanDyke picked her
up as a prostitute in St. Peters-
burg. He then sexually assaulted
her multiple times Monday af-
ternoon and evening, bound and
gagged her, and locked her in his

home before reporting for his 9 p.m.
shift as a sleep disorder technician
at 750 94th Avenue North. Police
say VanDyke left two patients un-
attended undergoing MRIs while
he drove back to Gulfport to check
on his captive.
Police have charged VanDyke
with kidnapping and sexual battery
(rape). The sexual battery charge
will keep VanDyke from bonding
out of prison.
"If he's convicted with what he's
been charged with, then he'll be a
sex offender," Vincent said.
Prior to his arrest VanDyke lived
at 2617 47th Street South, the
scene of Monday's crime. Pinellas
County records show he purchased
in 1985 for $35,000.
"I didn't know him very well. He
was just one of those guys who
made me feel creepy- so I stayed
away from him," Ashley said.
Lieutenant Vincent says Gulfport
doesn't typically see crime of this
nature.
"You hear about it, but I've never
seen anything like this- not in this
town, anyway."

Historic John's Pass will be the site

"A fund-raising campaign is under-

these many brave fishermen," Mark
Hubbard adds. "Our goal for the Flor-

collected, with a boost from profits at

You Won't Feel a Thing
By Cathy Salustri
By 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, Dr. Dew-
ayne Taylor had spayed and neutered 16
pets. As the cats and dogs waited in the
air conditioned Pinellas County Animo-
bile, he prepared to microchip other pets
and give still others rabies shots.
The first patient, a three year old dachs-
hund, seemed blissfully unaware as Dr.
Taylor gave him his three year rabies
shot outside Enoch Davis Center in St.
Petersburg. 4
Taylor, a licensed veterinarian, works .
with Pinellas County Animal Services' -
Animobile program. The Animobile tray-
els throughout Pinellas County and of-
fers low cost and free spay and neuters,
rabies shots, and microchipping.
People drop off their cats and dogs in
the morning, a veterinarian spays or
neuters the animal, and the owner re-
turns to pick them up that afternoon.
The Animobile doctors spay cats for $30 (according to Taylor, they ,will spay cats in heat for the same price) and neuter cats
for $20. Anyone receiving public assistance can get their dogs and cats spayed or neutered for free; the Pinellas County Ani-
mobile does not spay or neuter dogs belonging to people not receiving public assistance.
With surgeries completed in the morning, the Animobile staff uses the afternoons to give cats and dogs rabies shots and mi-
crochips. A one year rabies shot costs $9; three year vaccines cost $21. Both fees include a license. Microchipping costs $10.
The Animobile will return to midtown on August 17th, 21st, 30th, and the 31st. For more information call Pinellas County
Animal Services at 582-2600 or visit www.pinellascounty.org/animalservices.

YOU & THE

L AWI

Steps Involved in the
Probate Process (Part I)
1. Locating and Filing the Will
The first step in the probate process
is to determine whether the deceased
left a will, that is a legal document
prepared by a person before death
directing how to distribute property
after death. If a will exists, the person
is said to have died testatee".
Although determining that a will
does exist might be fairly easy, find-
ing the will may be more difficult. It
is important to locate the last will and

any amendments (called codicilss")
to it. Among the places where people
commonly keep wills are strong-box-
es, file cabinets, desk drawers, and
safe deposit boxes.
If you have agreed to serve as the
Personal Representative for some-
one's estate, it is essential to learn in
advance where the person keeps the
will. If the will is in a bank's safe de-
posit box, please keep in mind that
the law requires the box to be sealed
at the owner's death. Because you
need to get a court order to open a safe
deposit box, it is not the best place to
keep a will.
Within ten (10) days following death,
the will should be filed by your at-
torney with the probate clerk in the
county where the person lived at the
time of death. In most cases, however,
there is no need to rush to the probate

clerk's office. If you have recently lost
a spouse or other loved one, this is a
stressful and vulnerable time. You
might want to wait a few months, un-
til you are feeling settled, to begin the
probate process. With the passage of
a few months' time, you may be in a
better position to tackle the decisions
and details of probate.
2. Initiating the Probate Process
Any person entitled to the deceased's
property as an heir, as a beneficia-
ry named in a will, or as a creditor
(known as "interested persons") can
file a written request at the probate
clerk's office to begin the probate pro-
ceeding. This written request is typi-
cally called a "petition for probate ad-
ministration".

"And where would that be?" the
lieutenant asked, more than a little

PROTECT
Flo.,;A's Water

WHAT IS STORM WATER?
Stormwater is not clean water;
stormwater runoff carries pollut-
ants that seriously harm our
waters! It is the rain that flows off
streets, rooftops and lawns that
carries salt, sand, gasoline, pet
wastes, soil, pesticides,
fertilziers, leaves and grass
clippings, oil, litter and many
other polluntants into storm
drains.
WHERE DOES THIS GO? A
common misconception is that
water running off streets goes
into a sewage treatment plant it
does not! Stormwater usually
receives no treatment and water
that runs off lawns, streets and
parking lots flow directly into our
waterways, streams, rivers, bays
and eventually the Gulf of
Mexico.
As the stormwater flows across
pavements, lawns and fields, it
picks up pollution and carries it
directly. into the City's storm
drains (sewers).

WE ALL CAN HELP!!

Don't overuse fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. REMEMBER,
what you put on your lawn may eventually find its way into our
waters.
Don't improperly dispose of automotive fluids (motor oil, anitfreeze,
transmission and brake fluids). Don't let them drain into your drive
way or lawn, and make sure they are contained and disposed of
properly.
Don't dump yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, etc.) into ditches,
canals or storm drains.
> Don't drain swimming pools onto streets, ditches or lawns.
> Don't wash your vehicles) on the driveway. Wash cars on the lawn
or take to a commercial car wash.
> Clean up pet waste bury it or flush down toilets.

The amount of pollution that you stop may seem small, but
together it all adds up to cleaner water for everyone to enjoy!

not feel comfortable confronting them about it, report it to the City of Gulfport Code
Enforcement at 893-1061 or the Police Department at 893-1030.

Ordinance Update
Wondering when the new Sidewalk
Caf6 Ordinance will take effect?
Here's the update: Gulfport city staff
prepared a draft sidewalk caf6 ordi-
nance and submitted it to the City
Attorney on June 8.
Once the City Attorney completed
his review, he sent his draft to staff
on July 31. Because this draft pro-
poses several amendments to the
Zoning Code, the Planning and Zon-
ing Board will review it and make a
recommendation to Council. Plan-
ning and Zoning will review the draft
on September 5; Council should see
their suggestions at the September

This N' That in
South Pasadena
By Sibylle Stajich
Community Band
The South Pasadena Community
Band will resume rehearsals that
had been stopped for a few months
during the summer. On Thursday,
Aug. 9th at 7:30 p.m. in Hibiscus
Hall they will start again for the
new season and invite guests to
come and listen. They also wel-
come new band members and need
an Administrative Assistant. If
you are interested, call the Band
president Ron Stoll at 896-1500 for
more details.
Volunteers
An opening on the Beautification
Committee is available for a volun-
teer to help serve in this important
capacity. The same applies for the
Planning & Zoning Board and ap-
plications for both jobs are avail-
able at the City Clerk's office.
At The Fountains
Come and join everyone for a
Brunch & Learn session on Thurs-
day. Aug. 9th at 10 a.m. at 1255
Pasadena Ave. So. Meet the great
residents and learn what it's like
to live in this beautiful community.
You will enjoy a delicious buffet-
style brunch. Then on Tuesday,
Aug. 14th from 2-3 p.m. come also
to The Fountains and hear what
you can learn from your past. Dis-
cover how to turn your memories
into a living legacy. Light refresh-
ments will be served. Please RSVP
by Aug. 10.
An Unusual Encounter
This really didn't happen in South
Pasadena, but I want to tell you
about it anyway. On my way to the
Gabber last week, all of a sudden
a large peacock crossed the nar-
row street in front of my car. His
tail was especially long and he had
beautiful colors. I was just able to
quickly brake to let him run by. He
looked fiercely at me and uttered
some peacock remarks as he ran
across the street and disappeared!
It was quite a "wildlife" experience
for me.

Salerno Theatre Plays for Community

By Morgan Lanais

Salerno Theatre has been perform-
ing four Broadway Musicals a season
at the Hickman Theater in Gulfport
for the past few years, virtually sell-
ing out many of their shows. In do-
ing so, the professional musical the-
ater company has created some very
close ties to the Gulfport and Pasa-
dena communities- as well as the
audience members which many are
members of Pasadena Community
Church (PCC).
While Salerno will continue to per-
form their Broadway Musical Sea-
sons for the foreseeable future at the
intimate Hickman, they have been
constantly searching for additional
ways to positively touch the lives of
their audiences in the community
outside of their standard Broadway
offerings.
After talking to some members of
PCC on how Salerno Theatre could
help increase the production quality
of church productions, and asking
how they could do more to give back
to the community, the two worked
out a very positive agreement.
The Salerno Theatre's sister com-
pany, American Concert Company
(ACC) produces high-energy theat-
rical concerts for both theatre audi-
ences and corporate customers alike.
Gulfport audiences will remember
their inaugural production of Broad-
way In Concert in January.
ACC will perform six original high-
energy theatrical concerts a season
in the 1,500-seat Pasadena Com-
munity Church, located at 227 70th
Street South. In addition to Sal-
erno's Broadway musical season at
the Hickman, the two groups will
be giving local audiences 10 musical
productions a year five more than
they had last season.
"The work that Pasadena Com-
munity Church and American Con-
cert Company will do together will
strengthen PCC's connection to the
whole community using entertain-
ment as a common thread," explains
Mike Mathews, President and Pro-
ducing Artistic Director of the Sal-
erno Entertainment Group. The
concerts will benefit PCCs youth
missions and general community
outreach programs.
In order to support the theatrical
Gabber August 9 August 15, 2007

performances in the church, the Sal-
erno Theatre has engineered a com-
pletely mobile, stand-alone concert
environment which includes sound,
lights, portable stages, special ef-
fects, a proscenium arch unit, theat-
rical draperies, and more. They call
it Metamorphoses. They can turn any
ballroom, church, or auditorium into
a family style nightclub for all ages
overnight.
"The shows are not set in a particu-
lar genre, thereby allowing us to en-
tertain audiences with a wide variety
of musical tastes. From the music of
Broadway or The Rat Pack to country
or the hits of the '60's, there is music
here i for everyone," Mike explains.
"It's: high quality family entertain-
ment in a friendly environment."
Salerno's ACC has performed for
Fortune 50 Corporations, at major
regional theatres such as the Tam-
pa Bay Performing Arts Center, as
well as on tour across Florida. They
have received permission directly
from popular composers and/or their
representatives for all the music
performed in their concerts, as well
as maintain all proper performance
agreements with ASCAP and BMI.
The concerts have been designed to
provide the same level of entertain-
ment and excitement that audiences
would expect in the main ballroom of
a cruise ship, or the popular cabaret
theaters of upscale resorts and hotels
across the country, where there is en-
tertainment for the whole family.

Their first show is Music of the
Knight: The Songs of Sir Andrew
Lloyd Webber & Friends (the popu-
lar composer of Phantom of the Op-
era, Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ
Superstar), running August 17th
through the 25th, starting at 8 p.m.
each night. Adult tickets are $25,
with Senior tickets available for $22.
Group rates are also available. You
can order tickets online at www.Sal-
ernoTheatre.com or by calling (813)
926-9175.
The organizers of these series of con-
certs believe that this will only be the
beginning. Salerno Theatre and PCC
invited 120 local religious and com-
munity organizations for Music of
the Knight. In the future it is hoped
that these other organizations can
participate and help build upon the
success of what can only be viewed
as a start to something truly unique
and entertaining for the community
at large.
"Sixty percent of our focus will al-
ways be to help the people and organi-
zations in the communities that have
been good to us," Mike states. "The
Hickman Theater, and the Gulfport
and Pasadena audiences have been
amazing, so both the Salerno The-
atre and American Concert Company
are definitely happy to help out.

For more information about
Salerno Theatre, to buy tickets to one show
or for an entire season, you can either visit
their web site at www.SalernoTheatre.com
