MANATEE LIVESTOCKER

February / March 2010

Dear Livestock Producers,

The spring of the year is quickly approaching. Hopefully, with it will bring an end to
the extremely frigid winter weather we have been having recently. With spring brings the
time of year to test your pasture soils for pH, minerals and nutrients to ensure you will be
ready for the growing season when the summer showers arrive. Many people also use the
spring as a time to prepare for renovating pastures as they see fit. Take this time to ensure
you have a reliable seed or vegetative source for your planting materials, as well as, a way to
plant your material. There are many publications online related to pasture establishment and
renovation from the University of Florida located at www.edis.ifas.ufl.edu. This website
contains a vast amount of publications related to livestock production. As always I am also
available to provide you the information you need.

In this edition of THE LIVESTOCKER I have included information on many
upcoming programs. Some are traditional yearly programs that occur, but some are new
programs being offered in our area. I would encourage each of you to take the time and
check them out if they pertain to your interests or needs. One of the highlights this year is the
Ona Road Show. On the evening of Tuesday, March 30th we will host the State Specialists
from the Ona Research and Education Center at SMR Farms' hay barn for an evening of
dinner and conversation. This will be your opportunity to talk with the specialists who are
currently doing different studies on herbicides, forages, soils and animal science and find out
what new information is being found through their research. I would strongly encourage
everyone to attend. The event is free of charge, but we need an RSVP to prepare enough for
dinner.

As always, if there is anything I can do for you please let me know. I hope everyone
has a great spring and I will be in contact with you for the summer edition of THE
LIVESTOCKER.
