Digital Archive and Distribution Systems:

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA LIBRARY POLICY

This policy assumes use of Florida Center for Library Automation support services and systems
primarily, to minimize duplication of services and systems at the University of Florida Libraries, and,
secondarily, to build and strengthen digital collections collaboratively both to
increase UF research access to resources by minimizing necessity, of either researcher or query
systems, to search across widely distributed digital collections of similar materials, and to
increase the viability of digital projects grant proposals on the strengths and merits of the
cooperative.

The Libraries shall maintain digital masters, in compliance with national and local standards, for all sources
(archival, library and museum materials) digitized.

All digitized object files and metadata shall be maintained and archived by the Digital Library Center in
collaboration with the Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA).

Where possible and insofar as supported, the Libraries shall archive digital object masters and associated
metadata in FCLA systems. Using 'dark storage" not accessible to the public, and on the requirement of
appropriate staff access controls, this does not necessarily exclude sources protected by copyright or privacy.

Where possible and insofar as supported, object-level display systems shall be those of FCLA, with the
requirement of proper and displayed attribution of holding institution in the metadata associated with the objects.

Databases supporting individual collections shall be constructed using a component model such that "chunks" of
code or program modules may be reused from one collection to the next.
