News & Notes

Mark your calendars for the following
December Happenings:

OER-Sponsored Research Training:

Topic: Basic Stats Holiday Camp 2010
Presenters: Cyndi Garvan, PhD with
Carmelo Callueng, RA
Date: Thursday, December 2
Time: 9:00am to 4:00pm
Location: Terrace Room

'At the Stats Holiday Camp we will
cover the basics of conducting
quantitative research. We will show
how statistics fits into the investigative
process and review both the
classification of variables into data types
and basic stats methods (t-test,
correlation, ANOVA, and chi-square
tests). We will reveal several "secrets of
statistics," including the connection of
data type to choice of stats methods.
Finally, we will exhibit best practices for
the effective presentation of research
results.

Additional topics will include: Scientific
Method & research process, Data types,
Taxonomy of statistics, Summary stats
and graphs, Problem statement, and

Research questions types, among
others.'

Attendance is limited to 25 people.

RSVP to Rosie (rwarner@coe.ufl.edu) by
November 15.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

UFRF Professor Presentation

Please join UFRF Professor, Dr Mirka
Koro-Ljungberg for a brown-bag
presentation:

Topic: Developing Research Questions
for Qualitative Studies
Date: Tuesday, December 7
Time: 2:00-3:00pm
Location: Terrace Room

'In this presentation I will discuss how
carefully developed research questions
may support qualitative researchers in
their research processes by providing a
variety of boundaries for their study
designs. These boundaries may indicate
a researcher's epistemological and
theoretical connections and provide

support and justifications for their
research choices. I argue that research
questions should not be
decontextualized or seen as technical or
independent aspects of research design.
Rather, the development of research
questions should be viewed within
specific epistemological, theoretical and
cultural contexts, thereby influencing
the entire research process and
reflecting the ways in which a
researcher positions him/herself as a
knower.'

Refreshments will be provided.

Please RSVP to Rosie Warner
(rwarner@coe.ufl.edu) by December 3.
