News and Notes

A week or so ago, Paul sent out an email
message summarizing our plans to develop a
structured program to support grant writing
efforts by COE faculty. This initiative is being
established as a follow up to the Grantwriters
Seminar that many of us participated in this
spring. It is being modeled after a workshop
designed to provide very specific feedback to
grant writers on proposals they are planning
to submit. We are extending an invitation to
COE colleagues to join us as we move
forward in this effort. Please mark your
calendars; we will hold an organizational
session on Friday, September 8 in the
Terrace Room from 9:00am until
12:00noon. Lunch will be served. If you plan
to attend, please RSVP to Susie Welch via
phone at x96-234 or email: zsw(coe.ufl.edu.

To prepare for this follow-up session, here's
what we need from you: start thinking about
an idea for a project, then formulate a
tentative project title and draft a brief
description of your research. Next, begin
exploring funding agencies and specific
competitions. We would be happy to help you
search for an appropriate agency and
competition; if you need help, call Ana at x96-
235 or email: anapuig@(coe.ufl.edu. She will
need to know keywords or subject areas to
target a search for you. It would also help to
begin thinking about the expertise you need
on your research team; potential
collaborators) and pieces of the puzzle you
might be missing (i.e., content or
methodology experts). Later on this summer,
we will be asking those of you who are
interested in leading a project team to draft a
precis for distribution to all participants.

Everyone will review these documents and
come to the session better prepared to
explore potential collaborations and offer
their expertise. This will help us begin to
organize into teams.

Why are we doing this? As Paul indicated in his
email message, we are attempting to create
our own workshop as a follow-up to the IFAS
grant writing training we attended in May.
This will be a structured, guided process to
support faculty in their grant writing efforts.
We are seeking individuals and teams who are
earnestly committed to participate in a process
of mutual support that will see them through
to completion. The OER plans to invest in
this initiative by providing grant seekers and
their team members with a mentor, who will
review proposal drafts, offer specific feedback
and guidance, and move you forward in
proposal development and submission. More
details will follow in future communications.
Stay tuned!

June Submissions

Best wishes go out to Hazel Jones, Diane
Ryndak and Stephen Smith for their
individual proposals to the USDOE; and to
Fran Vandiver for her proposals to the
Florida Department of Education. For more
details about these submissions, see the table
