News & Notes

The Birth of CAPES

The Office of Education Research is
pleased to announce the creation of
CAPES (Collaborative Assessment and
Program Evaluation Services). Below is
the announcement that appeared in the
Jan 18, 2008 online edition of *FYI*
(http://apps.rgp.ufl.edu/research/fyi/arti
cle.cfm):

Collaborative Assessment and Program
Evaluation Services (CAPES) in the
College of Education, is now offering
program evaluation and proposal
development services. Services are
focused particularly on the educational
elements of projects. Funding agencies
and private foundations generally
require program evaluation plans.
CAPES can contribute well-written and
well-designed rigorous program
evaluation plans to grant proposals.

CAPES is directed by Drs. David Miller
and Cyndi Garvan. With colleagues in
the Department of Educational
Psychology, they will offer program
evaluation services, support on
qualitative as well as quantitative
design and analysis, and assistance with
writing the relevant sections of the
proposal.

Dr. Miller has worked in the fields of
accountability and evaluation for over
25 years. Dr. Garvan has over 10 years
experience as a collaborating statistician
on grants funded by NIH, IES, and NPF,
among others.

For more information, please contact
Rosie Warner for an appointment. She
can be reached at 2-2315 (x234) or
rwarner@coe.ufl. edu.

The OER is excited to initiate CAPES.
We believe that there is a substantial
need across campus for the services that
CAPES will offer, and that the resources
in the College of Education are uniquely
poised to meet these needs. CAPES will
be a specialized service initiative at UF
designed to provide researchers with
access to applied statisticians, program
evaluators, survey methodologists, and
data analysis programmers needed to
conduct state-of-the-art research.
Operating on a fee-for-services basis, the
CAPES directors will evaluate each
client's needs and satisfy those needs
from its small staff of research
methodologists, applied statisticians
and programmers. If CAPES is unable to
provide needed services then

recommendations to other UF resources
will be made. CAPES will support the
research and service mission of UF by
proving essential support for
researchers in virtually every academic
and professional discipline and support
the UF teaching mission by providing
training opportunities to graduate
students.

If you are in need of assessment,
program evaluation, or support on
qualitative as well as quantitative
design and analysis please contact
Rosie Warner for an appointment. Also,
please let your colleagues know about
CAPES!
