Office of Educational Research Bulletin (ORB)

News & Notes

As we mentioned in the August
bulletin, the Monday Morning Coffees
kick-off event will be held in the Faculty
Commons (Access Code: 4004*) on
September 10 at 10:00am.

This gathering will take place every
other Monday in the Faculty Commons
and will provide an informal meeting
time for faculty to come together to have
a cup of coffee, talk about research
ideas, and review the most recent FYI
and COS funding opportunities.

Fall semester dates are:

September 10
September 24
October 8
October 22
November 5
November 19
December 3
I-0

For our first event, we are pleased to
offer a brief presentation by Dr Cyndi
Garvan, newly appointed Statistics
Director in the Office of Educational
Research (OER) who will discuss her
experiences in collaborating with
researchers. She will also offer practical
advice on how and when to work with a

statistician and discuss the statistical
and data management services now
available through OER.

After Dr. Garvan's presentation (15 -20
minutes) there will be an opportunity
for COE faculty to sign-up for one-on-
one statistical consulting sessions.

Coffee and continental breakfast will be
served. Please RSVP to Rosie by Friday,
September 7 at rwarner@coe.ufl.edu

If you have ideas about topics for the
coffees or would like to take advantage
of that bully pulpit, let us, and we will
make the arrangements.

We hope to see you there!

OER Happenings

Please mark your calendars for the
following OER event:

September Brown Bag ~
Topic: Using Geospatial Analyses to
Predict Student Achievement on the Florida
Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT):
What's Right and What's Wrong with the
FCAT

Location: Terrace Room
Date & Time: Thursday, September 20
from 11:30am-1:00pm

Dr. Harry Daniels, Department of
Counselor Education, and Dr. Grant
Thrall, Department of Geography, will
present the results of an
interdisciplinary investigation of
student performance on the FCAT. The
results of the analyses of data from
Alachua County schools point to a
pattern of performance differences in
student achievement that appear to be
linked directly to particular
demographic indicators. The results of
the study will be discussed in terms of
alternative strategies that educators and
policy makers can use to interpret test
results, evaluate teachers and schools,
and manage enrollment.

As always, doctoral students are welcome!

Bring your lunch. Refreshments &
Cookies will be provided.

Please RSVP to Rosie by Monday,
September 17: rwarner@coe.ufl.edu

Save this date!
