News & Notes

The winds of change have been blowing
through the OER in the past few
months. As many of you know, we said
goodbye to Susie Welch, who moved to
South Carolina and to Devona
Ferguson, who accepted a position in
the College of Business. We wish them
well in all their endeavors!

We welcomed Rosie Warner as our new
Executive Secretary and she has quickly
become a valuable member of our team.
Unfortunately, due to the recent budget
freeze, we were unable to hire a senior
fiscal assistant. However, Jason Gallant,
our Research Assistant is training to
take over management of our grant
accounts. We are also planning to hire a
second Research Assistant to help us
provide support services to our faculty!

Finally, the search for a dually
appointed (OER and Educational
Psychology) Assistant Scholar and
Research Methodology Consultant has
been completed. Dr. Cyndi Garvan, well
known to several faculty members in
the college, has accepted the post and
will begin work on August 16.

Cyndi, a UF graduate, completed her
Ph.D. from the Department of Statistics
in 1996. Since graduating, Cyndi has

served as a statistical consultant and
project manager for various federal
grants in the College of Medicine and
currently is a consultant on two grants
housed in part in the College of
Education.

We want to thank the faculty search
committee members (Jamie Algina,
Chair; Mary Brownell, John Kranzler,
David Miller, Luis Ponjuan, Ana Puig,
and Youhua Wei) for their efforts in
locating top candidates throughout the
country and conducting interviews
during this past year.

Help us give Cyndi a warm welcome to
the college!

OER Happenings

Please mark your calendars for the
following OER events:

We are going to kick off the Monday
Morning Coffees in the Faculty
Commons (Access Code: 4004*) on
September 10 at 10:00am.

Check out the September issue of our
bulletin for details about this new OER
sponsored gathering.

September Brown Bag ~

Topic: Using Geospatial Analyses to
Predict Student Achievement on the
Florida Comprehensive Assessment
Test (FCAT): What's Right and What's
Wrong with the FCAT

Location: Terrace Room
Date & Time: Thursday, September 20
from 11:30am-1:00pm

Dr. Harry Daniels, Department of
Counselor Education, and Dr. Grant
Thrall, Department of Geography, will
present the results of an
interdisciplinary investigation of
student performance on the FCAT. The
results of the analyses of data from
Alachua County schools point to a
pattern of performance differences in
student achievement which appear to be
linked directly to particular
demographic indicators. The results of
the study will be discussed in terms of
alternative strategies that educators and
policy makers can use to interpret test
results, evaluate teachers and schools,
and manage enrollment.

As always, doctoral students are welcome!

Bring your lunch. Refreshments &
Cookies will be provided.

Please RSVP to Rosie by Monday,
September 17: rwarner@coe.ufl.edu
