Notes

Abstract:
This is actually two recordings. In the first, Dr. Ira England announces the speakers, the Reverend Bill Osceola, pastor of the Miccosukee Independent Baptist Church, and his daughter. The daughter repeats "The Lord's Prayer" phrase by phrase and Rev. Osceola repeats each phrase in the Hitchiti language. Total running time is 00:02:00. The recording is not dated. In the second recording, recorded at the Glades Cross Mission in Everglades City, Florida on June 28, 1957, Deaconess Harriet Bedell recounts her life experiences. Total running time 00:11:14. Dr. England introduces Deaconess Harriet Bedell, 82 years old and a noted missionary of the Episcopal Church. She recounts her many experiences starting with teaching at a school in Oklahoma, becoming a missionary and working with American Indians in Alaska, and then finally going to Miami, Florida, on a speaking engagement with eleven other missionaries. The Florida Chain of Missionary Assemblies sponsored the speakers. The recording ends with Deaconess Bedell's mention of her visit to Muse Isle because of her interest in Indians. It is possible that the music recorded on the reel-to-reel tape (selections from Riggoleto and other pieces) was accidently recorded over the rest of Deaconess Bedell's account of her life's experiences such as her work for many years with the Seminole Indians.
General Note:
Originally recorded on reel-to-reel and reformatted to digital audio in May 2004.
