PUBLICATION ON DOMESTIC SERVICE IN
LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN


At the last Latin American Studies Association meeting in
Mexico City, Mary Garcia Castro and I organized a panel on domes-
tic service in Latin America and the Caribbean. During the months
of preparation, we discovered far more work had been done on this
topic than we could accommodate on our panel. Not only were there
several research studies, but there also were analyses of projects
and programs (such as those of Prates and Leon de Leal, noted in
the Table of Contents attached).

We therefore decided we would try to bring out an edited
collection of articles, since so little of this work has been
published anywhere. After extended correspondence with potential
contributors, we have come to an agreement with them on the
accompanying outline. Most of the articles are already in hand.

We already have several expressions of interest from publishers,
including the Fondo de Cultura in Mexico City -- which ordinarily
does not publish original works, but wants to see the domestic
service volume because of the increased interest in working-class
women and the success of the Moema Viezzar's biography of Domitila,
the woman of the Bolivian mines.

We agreed with the persons involved in our panel (and
subsequently with the others) that we will try to bring out a
Spanish edition first, so that the book can be of assistance to
household workers and those who are assisting them in their efforts
to organize. At our "Pequeno Encuentro," held after the LASA
meetings at CIDHAL's headquarters, the domestic workers present
told us that such a volume would be helpful in legitimizing their
attempts at organization and in bringing to the authorities and
others their situation and problems.

Our difficulty at the moment, is the cost of translation and
other editorial expenses. The Spanish edition would involve ten
translations, and the English edition, twelve (see attached).
Together with other editorial costs, we believe that we could
ready the two volumes for between $11,000 and $12,000. A budget
also is included.
