This is the Sea-serpent they met there. "What land is that across the water ?" asked the Three
Bold Babes. "Sorrow a know know I," said the Sea-serpent, who, in his giddy youth, was one of
those driven out of Ireland by St. Patrick. "Will you take us across?" asked the Three Bold Babes.
"I will that, and welcome!" said the Sea-serpent, an amiable soul in his way.

This is the King telling the Three Bold Babes how his- little aliter Eyebright was banished
from the kingdom a year ago for saying that she did not believe that the Head-hopper manner of
going was the best possible. "Now that we have seen you, we know she was right!" groaned the
King. The Three Bold Babes determined to think over the matter in private.

These are the Three Bold Babes going secretly forth by misty moonlight, disguised as Head-
hoppers, to seek for the Princess Eyebright. Their very awkward hops roused the suspicions of the
guards; who, however, wisely decided to do nothing, and the Babes reached the open country in safety.
