Student Affairs Update

CENTER FOR LEADERSHIPAND SERVICE: Creating Global Leaders

The Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) was created in April 2005 as a part
of the Dean of Students Office to increase the emphasis on leadership and
service and to prepare students to be global citizens. The Leadership Values
Statement, developed by the Division of StudentAffairs Leadership Committee,
articulates the integral components in leadership necessary for positive change
through meaningful, reciprocal contributions within the campus, local, and global
communities. By promoting service-learning and academic initiatives; community
service opportunities including short-term service, ongoing service and service
organizations; leadership development; leadership and service resources and
education, CLS provides opportunities for students to develop and practice the skills
outlined in the Leadership Framework shown here.

Service Learning and Academic
Initiatives

Service learning is a powerful teaching
method that connects meaningful
community service with academic
learning. CLS provides a variety of services
to assist faculty and students with
service-learning courses and training. CLS
also partners with many academic
departments through the promotion and
support of the Interdisciplinary Minors in
Leadership, which include the
Organizational Leadership in Nonprofits,
Leadership Development and International
Humanitarian minors.

Leadership and Civic Education

To promote the development of leadership
and civic education, CLS supports several
programs such as leadUF, Service
Ambassadors and Gatorship. leadUF is
a unique student leadership group that
provides leadership development
opportunities and training. leadUF hosts
Gator Institute of Leadership
Development gildD), a one-day retreat
designed to help students further develop
as leaders and instill the same standards
of excellence throughout the student
leadership community.

Service Ambassadors educate students
on civic responsibility to inform them of
the opportunities available to those who
choose to make a difference. For

example, CLS is hosting the 2nd Annual
Florida Student Civic Engagement
Conference. This event will bring college
students from institutions across the state
to exchange ideas on student
engagement and many difficult issues
facing our state and our world.

Gatorship is an intense and thought-
provoking weekend retreat where
participants have the opportunity to
interact through team building activities
and group discussions to identify current
leadership issues in a multicultural
society.

Community Service

To promote community service, CLS,
Santa Fe Community College and the
Volunteer Center of North Central Florida
have challenged the community to pledge
to 50 Million Minutes of Service between
September 2005 and April 2006. To date,
the Centerfor Leadership and Service
has received 13,638,320 pledged
minutes of service from individual and
student groups.

Examples of one-day service activities
include Gator Plunge and Make a
Difference Day. CLS also provides
students with opportunities to be involved
in ongoing programs such as After School
Gators and Florida Alternative Breaks.
After School Gators is a program that
focuses on working with at-risk elementary

school children in after school programs.
Florida Alternative Breaks (FAB) is an
intensive community service trip during a
UF break outside of the local community
to promote social awareness and
advocate lifelong social action.

In addition to these programs, CLS
promotes individual service through an
online database of local volunteer
opportunities where students can register
to participate in those opportunities that
match their needs and talents. CLS will

be transitioning to Service Learning Pro
at uf.servicelearningpro.com effective
January 15, 2006. Service Learning Pro
is a web-based application that connects
students and faculty to service
opportunities; connects communities to
campus; and generates data reports
concerning individual student and campus
service and volunteer efforts forthe Center
for Leadership and Service.

As of December 7, 2005, the table below
demonstrates the number of student

volunteers in the Gainesville Community
from July 2005 December2005.

CLS programs are shaped by the
Leadership Values Framework, the
priorities of the Division of Student Affairs
and the University of Florida. CLS provides
ways for students to develop, enhance
and practice the skills necessary for them
to be "Leaders for a Global Community."
