Electronic Cow Identification is on the
Horizon

A lot has been said about animal
Identification and the need for a national
system for monitoring disease. One part of
the proposed system includes the use of
RFID (radio frequency ID) tags. In addition
to disease surveillance, improvement of
cow-handling and management can result.
Developers at our DHIA center (DRMS) are
field testing RFID integration into DHIA,
PCDART and PocketDairy. In addition to
providing the means for meeting proposed
health monitoring requirements, DRMS has
developed the system for transferring animal
ID and premises data to whatever database
might be appropriate. In addition to
collection of routine data at chute side or
from cows in lock-ups, electronic sort-gates
offer significant opportunities at many dairy
operations. Keep a look out for more on this
subject in the near future.
