sair, I speak to thbe democrats Lbf.
The most dincouragiul thnl on this
side of the house is flit that
many men tyho a 0 democrats, aidd
upposed to be a part 91 a dominant
party conducting th .' govetomeanemt,
seem to have no sean or aprehensio
of the respouklbililts an duties be-
longing to tl 'e onduet responsilbl
government. We are in charge of a
gremt governmental mI hlne, and our
lrt duty is to run it. It enus to m)e
that a great many men an this side of
the house do not realize that tha It f
any.part of what they are here for.
They seem to enjoy the pastime 0,
helping to scuttle the ship that thae
are embarked on. I for one propo
to vote In this matter just as I would
in private business. The town in
which I live voted a few months ago,
a million dollars of bohds for munici-
pal improvements. When they went
out to negotiate them they found that
they could make far better terms if
they Ntipulnled payment in gold; so
they redrafted their ordinance and
m"de the bonds payable ia 'that way.
That is a precise illustration of what
the government is asked to doto-day.
"I begeve there is a future for
the democratic pnrty. Gentlemen who
think this paity' is dead forget the
paut. They forget all that we 'have
survived and overcome. I say to you
that the partyof Thomas Jefferson, ot
Andrew Jackson, of Samuel J. Tilden
and of Grover Clevelandu (applause)
will never die. For days gentlemen
here have carped at and criticized thec
president. Whether he has made the
best bargain or not in the matter, I do
not know; but it does not lie in our
mouths to utter those criticisms. We
have left him to struggle with a des
operate situation as besthe could. We
have left him to negotiate a bargain
with monay-lenders, with inadequate
means and Inadequate laws. He has
done the best he could. '
"Further than that, he stands to-day
higher in the confidence and affections
of the American people, and he has
more following to-day in the United
States than either the democratic or
the republican party. (Applause.)
The people of this country, its busi-
r ness men, a great majority of Its popu-
lation are sustaining the president.
