My dear Cousin,
I have just heard of your and all of our great loss, in the death of Patton. It is
useless for me to say how much I sympathize with you. He was as dear to me as a
brother in boyhood, manhood, and under all circumstances and vicissitudes. I never
found him wanting, never missed his sympathy. [I] feel this Sabbath morning that I have
lost one of dearest friends, a brother I feel too much to write and only wish to say you
have my deepest sympathy tho it is of little worth for I have felt myself with best love for
yourself and the children. I remain
Your cousin & friend
