NLJ 1894 & 1979

The Nation I Library of Jamaica was established in 1979 with the collections of the world renowned West India
Reference Library (WIRL). The WIRL itself was established in 1894 by the Institute of Jamaica which itself came
into being in 1879 for the encouragement of Literature, Science and Art. With the establishment of the NLJ the
collection focus shifted from West Indiana to Jamaicana and the legislated functions of the new entity included;

availability of all materials relating to the

>Manuscripts
>Newspapers which go back to the 18th century

>Post Cards

The NLJ also is home to Jamaica's de facto film and sound archive.

Protect / Keeping Safe


Legal Deposit Act, 2002: Subject to regulations made under
section 8, every National publisher shall within one month of
the publication of any document which he publishes in
Jamaica deposit in each legal depository* the number of
copies specified.


Legal Deposit Regulations, 2004: Each national publisher shall
deposit with the legal depository the following number of
documents--
A) two copies of a printed document;
B) one copy of an audio visual document


* The Act designated the NLJ the "principal legal depository into which all documents shall be deposited.

In conclusion.. . .

As can be seen from the preceding, The NLJ is indeed making a
contribution to the protection of cultural diversity in the information
society. It is doing so by ensuringrthat the print and non-print record
of the nation which gave the world Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley,
Shdggy, Asafa Powell (the fastest man alive) etc etc are collected,
kept safe and shared Although NLJ primarily exists to foster a
nation knowledgeable about its history heritage

benefits as NLJ goes about its mission to collect, preserve,
