Overview

o Mental disorders, substance abuse, and
HIV/AIDS are important public health problems.
o All three diseases affect a significant number of
individuals in the Caribbean.
o The magnitude of the problems' prevalence,
impact, and associated costs is grossly
underestimated.
o The number of people with these disorders will
increase from 114 million in 1990 to 176 million
in 2010.

The USF AETC and the Library

o Located within USF's Louis de la Parte Florida
Mental Health Institute
o Federally funded Florida/Caribbean AIDS
Education and Training Center (AETC).
o AETC/Library service agreement
o Library staff provide a number of specialised and
individualised services

The Role of Academic Libraries

Increase the level of awareness that public
health authorities and professionals have of
the gaps and the challenges in these areas
Disseminate library and information practices
that can help increase our knowledge of
these problems in the Americas and the
Caribbean
Emphasise that information on public health
issues is a critical and urgent need

o Reliable, current statistics
o "Hidden" or not findablee" valuable source
documents and databases
o Documenting "authority" of resources
o Non-English source databases or materials
o Results, not instruction

Search and Retrieval Issues

Solutions

o Create alliances with librarians in host country
public health units or with government librarians
o Catalogue resources in American and Caribbean
bibliographic utilities
o Provide librarian-mediated services
o Establish cooperative and reciprocal collection
development
