FOREWORD
This series of bulletins numbered 22CJC-3c is devoted to various
listings of Basic Materials for Florida Junior College libraries.
Sponsored jointly by the Division of Community Junior Colleges of the
State Department of Education and by the Library School of Florida State
University, the bulletins are designed to provide convenient, up-to-
date materials lists for Florida's rapidly developing junior college
libraries,
Dr. Louis Shores, Dean, and Sarah Reed, Assistant Professor, Florida
State University Library School are the general editors of the series.
Students and faculty of the Florida State University Library School and
the Department of Audio-Visual Education are working under their direction
in preparing the initial lists. The book lists are being prepared by
graduate students in the Library School at Florida State University.
After each list has been completed, it is then circulated among junior
college librarians and faculty members, both in Florida. and outside the
State. The list is then compiled on the basis of the pooled judgment
of the respondents and appears as a Materials Bulletin.
These lists should prove useful not only because they are prepared
with the needs of the community junior college curricula clearly in
mind, but also because the two major basic lists, Bertalan's BOOKS FOR
JUNIOR COLLEGES (1954) and Morhardt's A LIST OF BOOKS FOR JUNIOR COLLEGE
LIBRARIES (1937) are out of date. It will be appreciated if suggestions
as to additions and deletions are forwarded to the Division of Community
Junior Colleges, State Department of Education, for consideration in
subsequent revisions of these bulletins.
A special word of appreciation goes to the students who have under-
taken these projects and to the librarians and faculty members who by
giving so generously of their time and knowledge have made this series
of publications possible.
I also would like to mention particularly Dr. Louis Shores, Dean
of the Florida State University Library School, Miss Sarah Reed, As-
sistant Professor of Library Science, and Dr. James L. Wattenbarger,
Director, Division of Community Junior Colleges, State Department of
Education for their special contributions to this entire series.

INTRODUCTION
Louis Shores, Dean, Library School
Florida State University
and
Sarah Reed, Assistant Professor, Library School
Like other graduate students of the Florida State University
Library School who have cooperated in preparing this series of materials
bulletins, David Lee utilized the pooled judgment technique in compiling
"A List of History Books for Florida Junior Colleges."1 The participants
as listed in the Appendix include ten Florida junior colleges and four-
teen non-Florida schools selected on the basis of a strong history cur-
riculum, a minimum of 150 students, a minimum of 8,000 volumes in the
library, regional or state accreditation, and geographic variation.
For his initial checklist of 689 titles, Mr. Lee began with a con-
sideration of the titles on existing junior college lists. He then re-
vised his list by examining books found in the libraries in this area
and by using such selection aids as THE BOOKLIST AND SUBSCRIPTION BOOKS
BULLETIN, AMERICAN HERITAGE, AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW, BOOK REVIEW
DIGEST, FLORIDA HISTORICAL QUARTERLY, THE BOOKMAN'S MANUAL, UNITED STATES
QUARTERLY BOOK REVIEW, STANDARD CATALOG FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIES, and the
bulletins issued by the Service Center for Teachers of History of the
American Historical Association. The final step in refining the check-
list circulated to respondents was a series of conferences with Weymouth
Unpublished Master's paper, 1960.
T. Jordan, Head of the History Department, Florida State University, and
various members of his staff.
Since the only areas taught by five or more Florida junior colleges
are United States history, western civilization, and current history, Mr.
Lee tailored his list accordingly. In noting sets of books such as The
Berkshire Studies in European History, The Rise of Modern Europe,
Chronicles of America, and the New American Nation Series, Mr. Lee general-
ly intends that the librarian be selective in purchasing. In the case of
such titles as Pageant of America or the University of Michigan History of
the Modern World, he would usually recommend the purchase of the entire
set. Bibliographic information is, for the most part, based on the 1959
issue of BOOKS IN PRINT. Classification approximates that of STANDARD
CATALOG FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIES. The arrangement is by subject with an
author index.
The editors are deeply indebted to Miss Mary T. Hatch, Readers'
Adviser, New York Public Library, and to Dr. W. T. Jordan. As in pre-
vious lists, careful bibliographic checking must wait for adequate person-
nel. If this list can be used as the basis for a satisfactory revision,
it will have served its purpose.
