FOREWORD

This series of bulletins numbered 22CJC is devoted to various list-

ings of Basic Materials for Florida Junior College Libraries. Sponsored

jointly by the Division of Community Junior Colleges of the State Depart-

ment of Education and by the Library School of Florida State University,

the bulletins are designed to provide convenient, up-to-date materials

lists for Florida's rapidly developing junior college libraries.

Dr. Louis Shores, Dean, and Sarah Reed, Assistant Professor, Florida

State University Library School are the general editors of the series.

Students and faculty of the Florida State University Library School and

the Department of Audio-Visual Education are working under their direction

in preparing the initial lists. The book lists are being prepared by

graduate students in the Library School at Florida State University. After

each list has been completed, it is then circulated among junior college

librarians and faculty members, both in Florida and outside the state.

The list is then compiled on the basis of the pooled judgment of the

respondents and appears as a Materials Bulletin.

These lists should prove useful not only because they are prepared

with the needs of the community junior college curricula clearly in mind,

but also because the two major basic lists, Bertalan's BOOKS FOR JUNIOR

COLLEGES (1954) and Mohrhardt's A LIST OF BOOKS FOR JUNIOR COLLEGE LIBRARIES

(1937), are out of date. It will be appreciated if suggestions as to

additions and deletions are forwarded to the Division of Community Junior

Colleges, State Department of Education, for consideration in subsequent

revisions of these bulletins.

A special word of appreciation goes to the students who have under-

taken these projects and to the librarians and faculty members who by

giving so generously of their time and knowledge have made this series

of publications possible.

I also would like to mention particularly Dr. Louis Shores, Dean of

the Florida State University Library School, Miss Sarah Reed, Assistant

Professor of Library Science, and Dr. James L. Wattenbarger, Director,

Division of Community Junior Colleges, State Department of Education for

their special contributions to this entire series.

INTRODUCTION

Louis Shores, Dean
Library School
Florida State University

and

Sarah Reed, Assistant Professor
Library Science
Florida State University

Like other graduate students of the Florida State University Library

School who have cooperated in preparing this series of Materials Bulletins,

Katherine Hammond utilized the pooled judgment technique in compiling "A

List of English and American Literature and Language Books for Florida

Junior Colleges."l The participants as listed in the Appendix include ten

Florida junior colleges and eighteen non-Florida schools selected on the

basis of a strong literature and language curriculum, a minimum of 150

students, a minimum of 8,000 volumes in the library, regional accredita-

tion, and geographic variation.

For her initial checklist of 854 titles, Miss Hammond began by con-

sidering titles on existing junior college lists in the light of her study

of Florida junior college curricula. She then revised her list by examin-

ing books found in the libraries in this area and by using The Bookman's

Manual, The English Journal, College English, and The Booklist and Sub-

scription Books Bulletin. The final step in refining the checklist circulat-

ed to respondents was a series of conferences with Francis G. Townsend,

Head, Florida State University English Department, and with various members

of his staff.

1 Unpublished Master's paper, 1960.

The editors are deeply indebted also to Miss Sara Crittenden, Librarian,

St. Petersburg Junior College, to Miss Mary T. Hatch, Reader's Adviser, New

York Public Library, and to Mrs. Eloise Lindstrom, Librarian, Stephens

College, for their invaluable editorial assistance.

Bibliographic information is based on the 1960 issue of Books in Print.

Arrangement is by subject with an author index which in this particular

list is limited to main entries. Both careful bibliographic checking and

attention to editions must wait for adequate personnel. A useful guide

for selection of titles and editions is, however, available in Bowker's

1960 edition of Bessie Graham's Bookman's Manual. This ninth edition re-

vised and enlarged by Hester R. Hoffman is entitled The Reader's Adviser

and Bookman's Manual and admirably lives up to its subtitle, A Guide to the

Best in Print in Literature, Biographies, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Bibles,

Classics, Drama, Poetry, Fiction, Science, Philosophy, Travel, History.

The Reader's Adviser will be helpful also in extending the works by in-

dividual writers, for as a consultant pointed out, one does not get to know

an author by reading a single book.

The usual policy in this series of booklists thus far has been to list

hardcover editions when available. A check of Paperbound Books in Print

will show that many of the titles are also available in paperback editions.
