FORE'TORD
This series of bulletins numbered 22CJC is devoted to various list-
ings of Basic Materials for Florida Junior College Libraries. Sponsored
jointly by the Division of Community Junior Colleges of the State Depart-
ment of Education and by the Library School of Florida State University;
the bulletins are designed to provide convenient, up-to-date materials
lists for Florida's rapidly developing junior college libraries.
Dr. Louis Shores, Dean, and Sarah Reed, Assistant Professor, Florida
State University Library School are the general editors of the series.
Students and faculty of the Florida State University Library School and
the Department of Audio-Visual Education are working under their direction
in preparing the initial lists. The book lists are being prepared by
graduate students in the Library School at Florida State University. After
each list has been completed, it is then circulated among junior college
librarians and faculty members, both in Florida and outside the State.
The list is then compiled on the basis of the pooled judgment of the
respondents and appears as a Materials Bulletin.
These list should prove useful not only because they are prepared
with the needs of the community junior college curricula clearly in mind,
but also because the two major basic lists, Bertalan's BOOKS FOR JUNTOR
COLLEGES (195h) and Mohrhardt's A IJST OF BCOKS FOR JUITOR COLTEGBE LTRRARTES
(1937), are out of date. It will be appreciated if suggestions as to
additions and deletions are forwarded to the Division of Community Junior
Colleges, State Department of Education, for consideration in subsequent
revisions of these bulletins.
A special word of appreciation goes to the students who have under-
taken these projects and to the librarians and faculty members who by
giving so generously of their time and knowledge have made this series
of publications possible.
I also would like to mention particularly Dr. Louis Shores, Dean of
the Florida State University Library School, Miss Sarah Reed, Assistant
Professor of Library Science, and Dr. James L. Wattenbarger, Director,
Division of Community Junior Colleges, State Department of Education
for their special contributions to this entire series.

INTRODUCTTCN TrO RASC LTST OF RE7FRENCE BOOKS FOR FLORTDA JUTTOR COLLEGES
Louis Shores, Dean, Library School
Florida State University
Both the older and the newer Florida Community Colleges will find
this basic Reference list a beginning point in book selection. The
Reference collection of any college library is a key to the evaluation
of the book stock in general. Consequently, a carefully selected "R"
collection provides the foundation for building a library to support
student learning and faculty research.
The present list should be considered a preliminary one. It was
developed by submitting a checklist to the librarians of the Florida
Junior Colleges during the academic year, 1958-59. The original checklist
was based on selections from the following aids: Shores, Basic Reference
Sources (A.L.A., 1954); Booklist and Subscription Books Bulletin (Separately
January, 195h to Sept., 1956, and combined to December, 1959); Winchell,
Guide to Reference Books and supplements (A.L.A., 1951-); Barton, Reference
Books (Enoch Pratt Free Library, 1959); Murphey, How and Where to Look
it Up (McGraw, 1958); and Walford, Guide to Reference Material (Library
Association, 1959). On the basis of checklist tallies of frequency and
conference with individual librarians among the Florida Community Junior
Colleges, the present preliminary list was prepared. Sarah Reed, co-editor
of the series, made helpful suggestions.
Arrangement of List. An approximate Dewey Decimal Classification
order has been followed. In some instances adaptations of numbers have
been made and combinations have been effected--such as political science,
law and government (320, 3h0, 350). Under each classification grouping
the sequence is alphabetic. Center heads are major classes; side heads,
subordinate. An author-title index complements the main arrangement.
Entry Fullness. Author, title, publisher, collation, price, call
number are standard. Open entries are followed by frequency in parentheses.
Although considerable checking and rechecking by graduate students, and
especially by graduate student DeWlitt Roper, went into this list, it is
possible that the usual margin of bibliographic error is involved.
Order Plan. As a selection aid the Basic List of Reference Books
should be used with the other lists in the series. Although it is hoped to
avoid duplication of titles among them, some repetition is inevitable. For
example, certain periodicals like Booklist and Subscription Books Bulletin
are so basic that they appear in both this list and the magazines list.
It is incumbent, therefore, that each library maintain an order and want
file for check before ordering.
As soon as possible this entire list of books should become a part
of the library. A plan for keeping it up-to-date should include con-
tinuous review of Reference bork lists such as the annual checklist in
the Library Journal, the monthly Current Reference Books in the Wilson
Library Bulletin, the Booklist roundup in the Saturday Review. Part of
the plan should include a rotation cycle of replacement for the encyclopedias
so that no one of the basic sets shall ever bear an imprint date older than
five years.
Revision )f this List. Suggestions for additions and deletion are
invited, as well as for corrections.
