Ephemeral Cities - Final Report
Florida International University Libraries
March 14, 2006

Florida International University Green Library was responsible for three areas relating to the Ephemeral Cities Project:
(1) processing and submitting digitized content to the online collection; (2) advising partners in Key West on
digitization methods and standards; and (3) assisting in the planning and implementation of a 'My Town' event in Key
West to solicit materials for digitization from the local populace. In support of this work, FlU received a total of
$27,124 in grant dollars and contributed another $37,636 in matching funds. At project end, FlU fulfilled all of its
obligations; expended 100% of the grant-awarded funds; and exceeded its original pledge of in-kind support by $5315,
or 16%.

Project Output

During the project period, FlU processed and transferred to the Florida Center for Automation or the University of
Florida 1719 images and associated metadata representing visual materials, texts, ephemera from Key West and Miami.
An additional 500 images, representing Key West city directories, was handled by the Monroe County Public Library in
association with University of Florida. The total output for FlU and the other members of the Key West Partnership
therefore equal 2219 images, exceeding the project requirement of 2050 images. A total of 159 original cataloging
records relating to FlU/Key West materials were created and loaded into the PALMM Digital Library
( by the FlU Cataloging Department. Over 48 hours of consultation were provided by FlU to
members of the Key West partnership. A itemized list of the materials contributed to the Ephemeral Cities online
collection is provided below.

Additional deliverables produced by FlU include a promotional postcard and a set of cataloging guidelines for the
materials processed by the FlU Cataloging Department. Over 1000 copies of the postcard have been distributed to
libraries, archives, and schools during the project period. A copy of the first draft of the postcard is included below -
it is currently being revised to reflect the final project URL and related links and logos. The cataloging guidelines are
available online at URL:
